Hello… my name is BONNIE. I’m an 8-year-old Shih Tzu. One month ago, I was surrendered to a rescue. Most people would think that was the saddest day of my life… …but it was actually the beginning of everything. Before that day, my life was very different. I wasn’t a pet—I was a breeder dog. I lived in a small cage where I ate, slept, and went to the bathroom. There wasn’t much light, and I was surrounded by other dogs just like me. My only purpose was to have puppies. And I did. Over and over again. The only love I ever knew was being a mother. I cared deeply for my babies… but they were always taken away from me. I told myself they were going to good homes—homes I could only dream about. That thought helped me survive. Eventually, my body gave out. I stopped having puppies. And that’s when everything changed. I heard the humans talking about me… about how I was no longer useful. I had seen what happened to the others when that day came. So I made peace with it. I truly believed my life was over. But then… something unexpected happened. Strangers showed up. Kind voices. Gentle hands. Two women pleaded for my life. I didn’t understand it at the time. In fact, I was confused… even angry. I thought they were taking away my only escape from the life I had known. But they picked me up, held me close, and carried me into a new world. A better one. The ride to California is a blur now, but what came after… I’ll never forget. For the first time in my life, I felt kindness. Patience. Safety. It didn’t happen overnight. I didn’t suddenly trust everything. But little by little, something inside me started to change. A tiny spark. Hope. Now, I’m learning what it means to just… be a dog. To be loved. To be seen. THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND CONSIDERATION MEET LESTER….aka “Gizmo” – as his fosters call him because of his adorable gremlin noises. Lester will grab your heart and not let go! Weighing in at 18 lbs, this 3 yr old, tri colored Shih Tzu has not had an easy start at life. Dad passed away and he was left with a family with medical issues who could not care for him. Came to us with a double ear and eye infection, both treated and he’s doing great. Treating his eyes is a breeze. He does have slight dry eye and will need meds daily, maybe forever. Treating his ears can be a little challenging, but he gets used to it. Lester is a wonderful pup who needs structure and boundaries and to feel safe. Loves to play, chase balls and fetch! Loves to be near you and get attention, sometimes demands it and will make little gremlin noises to get it (especially at dinner)! He’s a big snuggler – will sit at your feet, sleep on your lap, and wants to be your cuddly shadow! Lester will replace any alarm system and will bark to alert. He will stand between you and the noise to let you know he’s your protector. Does have resource guarding issues, particularly with food/ toys and possibly the couch (or anything he claims), and will occasionally steal a sock out of the laundry. He is very food motivated and will surrender if you bribe him with a treat. If you set him up for success, he is very smart and will respond accordingly. There were some nipping incidents early on in his foster home (he got too riled up at feeding), but he has responded very well to training and is a super quick learner. Very much thrives with consistency and structure and is eager to please. He needs savvy, extremely patient parents who have dealt with stubborn Shih Tzus and are committed to continuing his training. This will be the key to Lester’s success – he needs to be reminded who the boss is! Ideal home will be without kids, with/without another dog (preferably bigger than Lester), and parents who work remote and can give him lots of attention. He’s potty trained (took a day to figure out where in the yard go), but we never guarantee! Lester has his basic leash manner down and loves his walks and his time exploring. He’s learning that snuggle time on the couch/bed must be earned. Absolutely needs a family who understands parameters and will work with him. If you’re looking for a best friend, look no further! THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND CONSIDERATION MEET KELLER….a b/w, 8-10 yr old, 10 lb, Shih Tzu, who is an absolute treasure. It’s unimaginable to believe he was tied up to a tree, in the pouring rain, and left — just plain left behind 🙁 How anyone could do that to this precious soul, we do not know. We received a call from a Good Samaritan to see if we could take this boy — and after looking into his cloudy but loving eyes — of course we said yes! Keller has glaucoma, predominately in his right eye, and heavy pigmentation in his left. He is likely blind but may see shadows. While his eye pressure was off the charts, the medication we are giving him is helping to make him comfortable. He is smart as a whip, as he was shown to the steps in the backyard to go out, and he didn’t need to be shown a second time — he knew where to go! He has a “high stepping” trot outside and is pretty quick on his feet! At adoptions, he kind of tramples over the other dogs and is like a comedian to watch! He gets along great with dogs and cats but doesn’t need either in the house. He can be very vocal because his hearing has taken over for his eyes, so he likely would be better in a home vs. a condo or apartment. He likes to sleep a lot during the day…but when it comes time for dinner or treats…he’s right in line with the rest of the crew!
