Story
Say HI to Zeus! This beautiful baby boy is approximately 8 months old and is going to become a magnificent companion and best friend to a very special family. Not only is he stunningly handsome, he is curious and very puppy like. His smile is absolutely contagious. Zeus is a little skittish at first meeting new people, but he is highly treat/food motivated and comes around quickly. If you give him a good back scratching, he will be your buddy for life. He enjoys hugs and kisses, running around the backyard playing with dogs and humans alike. He follows people around the house, looking for a pickup game of ball or rolling around looking for back scratches.  He is the perfect size/weight for a male shiba and is a beautiful cream color. Due to his prior apartment life, he does not go down stairs currently. He learned to go upstairs quickly but going down is a bit of a challenge. It should click any day now if the weather cooperates, as he is wicked smart. Leash training will begin shortly as he is not used to being on one.  Zeus is in need of a family that understands he is still a puppy - when excited he jumps up on people, we are working on this, but he should grow out of it. A household with small kids needs to know that they might trip over him or he might knock them down. Not a deal breaker at all, but a consideration.  He is very confident and silly. He LOVES toys, heavy chewer toys - might outgrow the need for them in the future once he gets older. A fenced in back yard is a must and the fence must be in great condition; NO loose boards or room for him to squeeze under/through the fence. He is so smart, he will figure out weaknesses and will use it to his advantage to roam. He definitely needs some mental stimulation to keep him busy and happy. Due to his playfullness, he will more than likely irritate an older dog, so having an adult dog or younger would be the idealHe could do just fine as an only dog but will need a lot more human interaction. I think he would prefer people over another dog, as he really loves the attention he gets. Zeus is very excited about cats, and would do go with one IF that cat loves to play and be chased. Otherwise, he would terrorize a cat who wants to be left alone. He enjoys playing with small dogs, but is a bit rambunctous and gets carried away. Would not recommend small dogs under 5lbs. He is very vigilant in paying attention to what is going on in the world, so living in another apartment is NOT in the cards for this sweet baby. He is not annoyingly barking all day though, only if he senses someone near the house.  He is learning what is and what is NOT acceptable to chew on, and leaving him free roam while gone is not a good idea, at least until he gets a bit older. A crate or pen would be suggested until then. Additionally, he rarely gets up on the furniture but when he does, it is to be near someone.  It is highly suggested that his future family is familiar with the breed, they are known as the 'cat' of the dogworld and do have some quirks about them. That being said, Zeus is a sweet boy who wants to be loved, with so much love and loyalty to give. The suggested adoption donation for Zeus is $415, which includes a lifetime of free relationship-based training for any behavioral problems (not obedience training).  Muddy Paws is a 501c3 non-profit organization meaning that part of your donation MAY be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are a 100% volunteer rescue committed to giving animals a second chance at life. All donations go toward that mission. Adoption fees are the primary source of funding for the cost of veterinary care for our animals. In 2022 alone, we provided animal Healthcare totaling over $399,000 covered mainly through adoption fees. Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION. Once your application has completed our prescreen steps, we will put you in touch with the animal’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the animal. The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver. Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks, and a Home Visit (Virtual in some cases) during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each animal, based on the animal’s needs. Story
My name is Penny and I’m looking for my forever home. My must haves are: a patient forever family who will help me continue to learn to trust humans, and a securely fenced yard, since I am not yet comfortable walking on leash. A resident dog or two is recommended. I’m 6 years old and I came to SIRA from a commercial breeding facility where I was a breeder mama. When the breeder didn’t want me anymore, SIRA rescued me and brought me to my foster home here in Davenport, IA. I was so scared when I first arrived here – it’s so different than everything I knew. It has taken me some time to learn that humans here are kind to me. I’m still very cautious, but I am learning that attention from humans can be nice. My foster mom sometimes brings me over to the couch to sit on her lap. That feels nice and cozy and I will happily stay there. But when humans are moving around, I move away or just stay in my safe spot. I’m also figuring out that the humans here have yummy things to eat! It’s taken me a while, but I’m brave enough now to take treats from my foster mom’s hand. There are other dogs here in my foster home and I like them. We like to play together, especially around bedtime when I start to get the zoomies. I am a healthy girl – spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, and I weigh around 18 lbs. My perfect forever family will be experienced with dogs like me who are shy and skittish. I’d love to have another nice dog friend or two to play with. They really help me feel safe and learn all about being a treasured family member. I haven't had the chance to meet any cats or small kids, so I don't know what I'd think of them. If you live in the Midwest and are interested in a sweet, shy, Pretty Penny to be by your side, the first step is to visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to start the application process. Applying helps SIRA learn more about you so they can make sure we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.

Story
My name is Kita and I'm looking for my forever home! I’m 6 years old and live with my foster family in Bondurant, IA. I came to SIRA from a commercial breeding facility where it was my job to make puppies. But that life is behind me now. I’m a healthy girl – spayed and up-to-date on my vaccinations – and I weigh just under 25 lbs. This is my first time living with humans in a home. Everything is so new and overwhelming! But foster mom is proud of me for how I am adapting. I'm still very shy and cautious with people, but I'm starting to understand that I can trust my foster family. They're so kind to me, and their affection feels nice, even though it's new for me. Sometimes when I'm feeling very brave I'll sneak up to get petted - and sometimes I'll even give little kisses or hop up on the couch. When I meet new people, I'm curious, but I generally won't approach until I know them. My very favorite thing about my new life is being outside! I love to be outside – chasing the other dogs in the fenced yard or just hanging out pretending I’m a wild Shiba doing wild Shiba things. My foster mom hangs out with me. It spoils my wild fantasy when she watches me and I let her know with my very best HOWL! My perfect forever home will be a calm, quiet place where I can continue to get used to this new life. I’d love to have a couple of cozy, soft, quiet spots of my very own, and a kind person to pet me and give me a hotdog from time to time. Loud noises and sudden, unexpected movements spook me and my instincts make me want to bolt and hide. For that reason, my forever family will need to be extra-careful when opening doors. I’d really love to have a securely fenced yard of my own to play in and a nice dog-friend or two to play with, but I could probably get used to leash walks with some more practice. I’m learning how to walk on a leash. I’m still a bit nervous at first, but once I get going, I forget to be nervous. I'm good with other dogs and I pretty much ignore the cats here in my foster home, so I’d be fine with them too. I’ve met some kids and I’m curious about them, but nervous because of their sudden movements and squealy noises. I’m a very good girl when left on my own. Foster mom lets me have free run of the house and I don’t have accidents or destroy things while she’s gone. If you live in the Midwest and want to help a pretty girl like me learn to live her very best life, then visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to start the process of becoming an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn about you and your home environment so they can tell if we might be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster mom, so we can meet!
