Story
We rescued Sidney from a horrific shelter in Memphis, TN. When we got him, he was skin and bones and had some barrier aggression issues (who knows what horrors he suffered there) It didn't take long for Sidney to realize he was now safe and could start letting down his guard. Sidney Poitier has filled out and is truly a stunning dog. Sidney is about 2 years old, and is at his healthy weight of 80 lbs. Sidney is a very intelligent fellow, he learns quicky and is anxious to please. He will do well with a job and/or a lot of stimulation, long walks and hikes. He will do well with an experienced dog person. Sidney loves meeting new people. He has done well with large dogs he has met, however he is would not be good with small dogs or cats. Sidney does show barrier reactivity, however, when the barrier is removed (whether it is a crate, fence or car window) he show absolutely no issues. Because Sidney likes a lot of activity, he will need a securely fenced yard (must be a physical fence, not an electric or invisible system)  He is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and on monthly treatment for flea/ticks and heartworm prevention Sidney is currently located in the Middle TN area but transport is included in the adoption fee for approved adopter If you are interested in Sidney Poitier, email cox_ann@bellsouth.net for an application

Story
Notes from her foster: Trooper has all the makings of a perfect dog! She is incredibly easy to live with and is extremely lovable. Trooper, or Roo Roo, is a simple gal whose favorite things are napping in a spot of sunshine and playing with chew and tug toys. With daily exercise, she's a couch walrus most of the time, and will either snuggle up with her person or find a cozy spot on her own. Troops enjoys daily walks in the morning and evening. She can be energetic on walks and we suspect she could be a good running partner with some training. Using a harness is very helpful for reducing pulling. Once she uses some energy, she walks very nicely. Continued training for leash walking would be helpful. She is fully housebroken and will ask to go out with quiet whining. She also "asks" to play by whining or doing the cutest little howling song. Maybe she could learn to sing? Troopy likes tug games with her person and will chase a ball for a brief time, and then she will "steal" the toy to play with on her own. She also likes durable chew toys and takes them very nicely from our hands. Though Trooper is extremely sociable and affectionate, she also does great being alone. She is crated when we are out, which she does with ease, especially when she gets her favorite treat for going in. When we are home, she will roam freely and sometimes even puts herself to bed when she's tired. Troopy's biggest challenge right now is her strong reactions to seeing other animals, especially through a barrier like a window or fence. This is understandable given her time in the shelter and has already started to improve while in foster. She will bark, whine, jump and lunge when she sees other creatures and it can be intense, though it ends quickly. This is much better when she is on a leash walk outside, but she still does get very excited by other furry critters. This is manageable through distraction and maintaining distance between her and other animals. A home in a lower-density environment would be helpful, especially as she learns new self-regulation skills. With continued love and opportunities for learning, Ms. Trooper would be the perfect pal for either a new or seasoned dog family. We love her SO MUCH and can't wait for her to find a warm, happy forever home.
