Story
Meet the Duke of the Catoosa Animal Shelter. Our Duke has a "rags-to-riches" story. Duke was a poor boy who had been roaming the roads around town. He would follow everyone around town, hoping to find someone who would take him home and let him be the Duke of their kingdom. Duke is a shy guy who doesn't really like to talk about his past, he would rather talk about his future. Since once upon a time Duke was living on the streets, and not in his castle, his trust is not easily earned. You can not win this Duke over with gold coins or fancy items. In order to gain Duke's trust, you must pay him with love, food, and time. Duke will need all the time he needs to adjust to his new castle, once he gets picked to join your royal family. Duke is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on his shots.

Story
***IN FOSTER CARE! PLEASE CALL TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET ME!***Several months ago, we began fundraising to help cover the costs for medial care for our new intake Willow, who was not only dealing with severe and chronic allergies but had also just tested positive for heartworm. Since then, Willow has been under the care of one of excellent medical foster families as she's undergone extensive rounds of medication for her allergies and the infections that their previous neglect had caused. They also cared for her through her lengthy and arduous heartworm treatment! Willow has finally finished her last heartworm treatment, and with her spay finally happening, we are ready to start seeking out her forever family! Willow is a3-5 year old medium-sized mixed-breed (seemingly a Heeler/Shar-Pei mix). It is rare that we meet a dog as mild, sunny-tempered, and just absolutely loveable and universally enjoyed as Willow is. Despite being in significant discomfort at the beginning of her journey form years of untreated allergies and their comorbidities, Willow has never once showed an ounce of meanness, tolerating invasive pokes, prods, and sensations with clearly-communicated pain but a never-wavering good-natured and hopeful outlook. Willow is good on a leash, great with kids, low-energy, loves strangers - temperament-wise, she's an easy addition to any household. Her foster family told us that recently, she thought Halloween and trick-or-treating festivities were created as a meet-and-greet opportunity for HER. Every single person that passed by her gaze was required to stop and get some one-on-one attention from Willow. She has recently transitioned to free-roaming inside while her foster family is gone at work and school, and so far, she's got a stellar report! She sleeps in her foster kiddo's room at night an overall is a pleasant and joyful companion who has brought joy and laughter to her fosters. It is important to consider that Willow's allergies will need upkeep for the rest of her life. Without daily medication as well as multiple-times-a-week maintenance for her ears and other itchy spots, she rapidly relapse into recurrent ear infections and constant itchiness that must be then more aggressively treated with steroids and anti-fungals. It is of equal importance to make sure that her monthly heartworm preventatives never lapse as the integrity of her heart is at much greater risk if she were to get heartwomr a second time. If you met her, you'd understand why she makes it well worth the extra maintenance and increased cost. To know her is to love her, and to be loved by Willow? The greatest gift of all! So although she's a super easy dog with a rewarding and wonderful personality, if you aren't ready to take on the lifetime expense of heavy-duty allergy medication, to be militant with monthly heartworm preventatives, and to be in constant communication with your vet, Willow may not be the right dog for you! Meeting Willow is by appointment only - shoot adopt.ffaa@gmail.com a message or call (417) 592-2512 to meet this special girl!

Story
Meet Peanut, an adult Shar-Pei mix with a heart full of love and a spirit brimming with joy. Her personality is a delightful blend of friendly, sweet, playful, goofy, smart, and mellow. Peanut loves to engage in a good game of fetch, her tail wagging in excitement. She's also a quick learner, mastering new tricks in no time. Yet, despite her playful nature, Peanut knows when it's time to relax, often curling up for a quiet moment of peace. She's truly a perfect companion for any home. Adopt Peanut, and fill your life with her sweetness and joy. Peanut is a 1 - 2 yr old female Shar-Pei mix. She has a medium energy level, so she should fit in well with most homes provided she receives a moderate amount of daily exercise and play. She does pull on a leash, but with basic obedience training, she should be walking like a champ in no time! Peanut is food motivated and knows the command sit. She mixes well with other dogs in a kennel, but is intensely interested in cats in the shelter environment. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642.
