Story
Rusty is a 5-year-old neutered male who came to us as an owner surrender, Rusty was loved very much by his former family, and it’s been hard on both parties. Rusty is standoffish with new people and would prefer a quiet home without children. He would benefit from socialization and basic obedience to build confidence and improve his leash skills.. When he meets new people he will bark and avoid in typical shar pei style. He does warm up to women faster than men and after a few weeks with his foster family he has really bonded with both his foster mom and dad. He is fostered with 3 other dogs and is doing great! He does not seem interested in playing with them but does enjoy their company. He is house broken and figured out how to go out the dog door quickly .  His foster mom kennels him when he is home alone to help him have a safe spay and he does great in the kennel, but he has been pretty trustworthy in the house. We would love to find a home who will give Rusty the time to settle in and become the best friend we see!  Rusty is currently about 75lbs but is working his weight loss plan and will soon be to his goal weight of 65lbs  December 1, 2024, 10:48 am

Story
Meet Damascus! a 2 and a half year-old Bear Coat Shar Pei with more wrinkles than a seasoned sage and a personality that's even more complex. With his majestic, teddy bear-like appearance, he’s a self-proclaimed expert in napping, snacking, and giving side-eye to anyone who dares disturb his royal rest. His impressive coat, as soft as it is stylish, serves as the perfect camouflage for his undercover operation as a couch potato and professional blanket hog. He enjoys long walks to the fridge and leaving his owners wondering if they’ve ever seen a dog so dramatically aloof. Not just a pretty face—he’s got the charm, the sass, and the ability to make you laugh every time he wiggles his butt for a treat. Damascus is fostering in the Houston, TX area. Story
From Foster: Benjamin is a magnet for laps. If there is someone to cuddle with, he is headed your way! He loves to play and loves his toys, but adores cuddling most of all. He is a quick learner and is almost fully potty trained. He is able to go 9 hour overnight in the kennel with no accidents. He is curious and smart and eager to please. He’s going to make someone a wonderful and loyal companion!! This pup was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. Meet and greets are by appointment only.  An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time.  When we do, it will be updated here.  This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above.  Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. Dogs adopted with our rescue come with FREE training from #GoodPup to help you build strong bonds from the start! If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free Pet insurance.  We are not affiliated with Pet First pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect).  Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico.  While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances.   More questions?  Read our FAQs here: https://4p4l.org/faqs/  Breed labels are a "best guess" by a shelter veterinarian and cannot be guaranteed.  A new study has concluded that (in layman's terms), breed assumption is NOT indicative of behavior in mixed breed dogs.  Therefore, if a dog looks presumably to be a German Shepherd breed, one cannot assume the dog will have a high prey drive.  From the study: "Although many physical traits were associated with breeds, behavior was much more variable among individual dogs. In general, physical trait heritability was a greater predictor of breed but was not necessarily a predictor of breed ancestry in mutts. Among behavioral traits, biddability—how well dogs respond to human direction—was the most heritable by breed but varied significantly among individual dogs. Thus, dog breed is generally a poor predictor of individual behavior and should not be used to inform decisions relating to selection of a pet dog" - https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abk0639 ##2212255##
