PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - WINSTON BREED - Rat Terrier SIZE - About 16 pounds AGE - 1-2 years GENDER - Male MEDICAL CONCERNS - None known BEHAVIOR CONCERNS - None known SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS - Winston is truly one of the most wonderful little dogs to come into our rescue. Clean, quiet, mild mannered, happy, playful, cuddly... the list could go on and on. This little fellow came to us from an eastern NC shelter where he had been found as a stray. Why no one ever came to claim him is a complete mystery. A dog this nice has to have been someone's well loved pet. Fully grown at just over 15 pounds, Winston is a perfect size for most homes! He is in good health, neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. We would love to find Winston a home with an active family. He appears to do very well with other dogs, but we would not want to place him in a home with large pets or small children to prevent accidental injury. A home with a fenced, secure yard is a must. Winston can't wait to find his new family, but truly, they will be the lucky ones! Our adoption process starts with your email to carerescue@aol.com or Adopt a Pet inquiry. After we receive it, we will email you our prescreening questionnaire. Your answers will help us determine that your home and lifestyle matches the needs of Winston and our adoption criteria. Once determined, we will set up a private meeting with you and your family to meet Winston at a park near our private kennel just east of Richmond. After meeting him and determining that he matches your preferences for a pet, we will accept your application. A home visit by one of our trained volunteers is required for all adoptions, and we will speak with your vet to ensure that you are a responsible pet owner. Story
Hi my name is Smokey.  I am a super sweet and very active 1 year old Rat Terrier mix who weighs 11 lbs.  I am so greatful to Critter Cavalry and happy to be in the care of my foster mom Dawn.  I have gone through a lot in my short life.  My original family adopted me as a puppy.  They did not have a fenced in yard and just let me run around wherever I wanted.  Well one day I did not get out of the way quick enough and got hit by a car.  The people just drove off.  Fortuately my family came to get me immediately.  I was so distraught as both of my back legs were broken.  My family spent a lot of money trying to get me well but could not afford physical therapy on top of everything else.  Soon my legs began to hurt and I had trouble walking.  A neighbor knew of Critter Cavalry and  that is how I got here.  I have had additional surgery and excelled in my physical therapy.  I am now ready to find my forever home.  I have a blast with the other 2 small dogs in my foster home.  They played a very important part in my recovery.  I want to keep my muscles strong and my hips working properly so I need a home with another small dog my age and size to be my exercise buddy.  No big dogs for me please.  I am scared of them and bark at them.  I am a great little guy who is housebroken to a doggie door and crate trained.  I love to go for walks and love to run around in our fenced in yard and play games in the house.  If you are an active family and already have one little active girl or guy then you are the family for me.  I have been neutered and am current on all my shots and microchipped.  To be considered for my forever family and to request an application please contact Vivienne at viviennejames@comcast.net.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (I am currently in Tennessee and can be transported to my forever home upon adoption.)February 17, 2025, 9:25 pm

Story
Gradie is a good boy. He does not get along with male dogs so he does not get a lot of free time around the house because we have 2 other older male dogs. We thought that if he grows up with them it would be different but as soon as he got of age he did not get along with my other male dogs. He definitely deserves a new home that will take care of him and treat him the way he deserves and give him the love he needs. He is a part of our family and we do wish that we could keep him with us but the circumstances will not allow us to keep him. We do love him and want the best for him.

Story
Cooper is a 2-year-old mini rat terrier that was purchased from a breeder when he was a year and a half old. His family tried hard to work with Cooper, but he had some reactivity issues with people. They surrendered him to New Rattitude and he went to work with a foster who is also a dog trainer! Cooper has learned a lot of things in the past month. He is still reactive in new situations and with people he does not know -- barking loudly, running away, or rushing at people, but he is learning to cope better and is doing those things with much less frequency.Aside from his insecurities, he is a funny, friendly, sweet dog! Cooper loves the people he trusts and will wiggle and play bow to get your attention. He has become fast friends with his foster mom's dad, who is the nightly treat giver. Cooper LOVES other dogs and toys and is very playful.  He has had no issues with any of the small to medium dogs in his foster home. He would probably do fine with cats as well.      He still doesn't trust the other men in the household, but is learning to be polite. He is being taught impulse control and goes on walks regularly with people he isn't attached to. Doing this helps him learn that the world isn't as scary a place as he thinks!  A video of his foster mom working with him is here:  https://youtu.be/0al1kCcnSRU . Cooper's adopters need to continue his training. For this reason we are requiring a local (within 2 hours) adoption.   Cooper weighs only 7 lbs., so he is easy to manage! He is only partially house-trained. He still thinks he can mark in the house so he wears a belly band when inside. He has been taught to 'Put his pants on' - stand quietly and have the belly band put on. Could littlest Cooper finally find the loving home he has been searching for? More photos are available here: https://imageevent.com/newrattitude/cooper Our adoption fee is $200 for adult dogs or $250 for puppies under 6 months old. Story
This 10 lb. bundle of cuteness and snuggler-extraordinaire is Bear. He's an almost 2-year-old rattie mix who has gone from being a scared and shy boy to owning the neighborhood and the park trails on his daily leash walks-- and happy greeting everyone he sees along the way!  As he has gotten more comfortable, he's showing the playful behavior of a young puppy, digging in the toy box, running and playing in the yard, and loving life. And sometimes, when foster mom isn't available, he'll steal a sock or slipper and curl up with that on the couch. Bear is an absolute love and remarkably well-behaved at home. He listens to foster mom and knows some basic commands. He is very quiet, and loves to cuddle. He's house-trained on a loose schedule and gives signals he needs to go out. He stays quietly in his crate all night until foster mom gets up in the morning.  He's good in the car, and looks forward to excursions because he knows they will end up at the park. Bear is an active dog and loves his daily leash walks and romps in the yard. He may be a great candidate for agility, where he can work with his person and burn off all that energy.  He gets along with his foster-sibling, but he does like being the center of attention, and often rushes in when it's time to put on his leash or get a treat. He likes the companionship of his foster sibling, and takes behavioral cues from him, so he'll do well with other dogs. Since he's also devoted to humans, he could thrive as an only dog -- as long as you're prepared to give him lots of attention. Bear hasn't been tested with cats. He can get very excited and bark when he sees other dogs on our walks. Foster mom has been working with him to address that reactive behavior, and his new family will need to provide some training so he matures into a sweet and well-behaved adult who can go anywhere.  Bear is a truly wonderful dog who will be a great companion for the right adopter! Go on over to his album at https://imageevent.com/newrattitude/bear and see the pictures of this little guy with the Mr. Big Stuff attitude!  Our adoption fee is $200 for adult dogs or $250 for puppies under 6 months old. If you are interested in adopting this dog, PLEASE READ THE DETAILED ADOPTION PROCESS information on our website at www. NewRattitude.org/adopt/  From there, you can access our adoption application or contact our Adoption Team for more info. February 18, 2025, 9:51 pm
