PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - WINSTON BREED - Rat Terrier SIZE - About 16 pounds AGE - 1-2 years GENDER - Male MEDICAL CONCERNS - None known BEHAVIOR CONCERNS - None known SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS - Winston is truly one of the most wonderful little dogs to come into our rescue. Clean, quiet, mild mannered, happy, playful, cuddly... the list could go on and on. This little fellow came to us from an eastern NC shelter where he had been found as a stray. Why no one ever came to claim him is a complete mystery. A dog this nice has to have been someone's well loved pet. Fully grown at just over 15 pounds, Winston is a perfect size for most homes! He is in good health, neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. We would love to find Winston a home with an active family. He appears to do very well with other dogs, but we would not want to place him in a home with large pets or small children to prevent accidental injury. A home with a fenced, secure yard is a must. Winston can't wait to find his new family, but truly, they will be the lucky ones! Our adoption process starts with your email to carerescue@aol.com or Adopt a Pet inquiry. After we receive it, we will email you our prescreening questionnaire. Your answers will help us determine that your home and lifestyle matches the needs of Winston and our adoption criteria. Once determined, we will set up a private meeting with you and your family to meet Winston at a park near our private kennel just east of Richmond. After meeting him and determining that he matches your preferences for a pet, we will accept your application. A home visit by one of our trained volunteers is required for all adoptions, and we will speak with your vet to ensure that you are a responsible pet owner. More information on our website at www.carerva.com.

Story
Cooper is a 2-year-old mini rat terrier that was purchased from a breeder when he was a year and a half old. His family tried hard to work with Cooper, but he had some reactivity issues with people. They surrendered him to New Rattitude and he went to work with a foster who is also a dog trainer! Cooper has learned a lot of things in the past month. He is still reactive in new situations and with people he does not know -- barking loudly, running away, or rushing at people, but he is learning to cope better and is doing those things with much less frequency.Aside from his insecurities, he is a funny, friendly, sweet dog! Cooper loves the people he trusts and will wiggle and play bow to get your attention. He has become fast friends with his foster mom's dad, who is the nightly treat giver. Cooper LOVES other dogs and toys and is very playful.  He has had no issues with any of the small to medium dogs in his foster home. He would probably do fine with cats as well.     Cooper has made big strides learning to trust more people. He continues to learn impulse control and goes on walks regularly with people he isn't attached to. Doing this helps him learn that new people aren't as scary as he thinks.  A video of his foster mom working with him is here:  https://youtu.be/0al1kCcnSRU.  Cooper's adopters will need to understand his personality and continue to work with him.  For this reason, his adopters must be able to come to his foster home to facilitate the first meeting.  Cooper weighs only 7 lbs., so he is easy to manage! He is only partially house-trained. He still thinks he can mark in the house so he wears a belly band when inside. He has been taught to 'Put his pants on' - stand quietly and have the belly band put on. Could littlest Cooper finally find the loving home he has been searching for? More photos are available here: https://imageevent.com/newrattitude/cooper Beginning March 1, 2025, our adoption fee is $250 for adult dogs or $300 for puppies under 6 months old. Story
We adopted Ziggy a couple of years ago from a local animal shelter. He took a while to warm up to us, but eventually developed a strong relationship with our other dog Penny and with our kids. Unfortunately, he needs much more affection and attention than we are able to give him right now with a toddler and full time jobs. He is constantly underfoot, rarely relaxes when food is around, and has a tendency to tear into stuffed animals and throw blankets. Easily trainable but we just don’t have the time or energy in this current stage of life. We want better for him. Ziggy would do best with someone who is retired or works from home and can provide him the lap time he so desperately wants.

Story
Meet Carter, a charming 2-year-old dog with a shy nature and a gentle spirit. At just 10.5 lbs., he is a little guy that needs some extra help developing his confidence. Until recently, Carter lived with at least 15 other small dogs that got dropped off at a shelter when their owner died. Once he got his new rattitude, Carter has been moving past his fears and is learning about living in a busy neighborhood with people and dogs and lots of loud noises. He's even mastered 'sit,' although other tricks allude him. This little dude is very interested in his people but is still a bit leery of big movements and loud or unfamiliar sounds. His dislikes include vacuums, joggers, and anything new. His likes include a quiet sunny spot for napping, a comfy pile of pillows or a fluffy dog bed to lay on, and a biscuit before bed. Carter is starting to explore his space more, especially tasting leaves, food wrappers, or other objects he finds outside and sometimes in the house. He doesn't yet play with toys, but does show interest in chew bones. While Carter may be curious about where you are, he gives humans their space and likes his space in return. Carter feels the same about the other small dog in the house and would be fine living with another small dog. Once you make it into Carter's inner circle, he will interact more freely seeking attention, but it takes some time to build his trust.Meeting strange people and dogs outside is still very scary for Carter and he needs to develop more skills in meeting both dogs and humans that are new to him as he most often reacts with some loud sounds (like a meerkat warning its family). He enjoys both treats and affection as part of training and needs to find an adopter that can continue working with him to overcome his fears and be his best self.Carter is house-trained on a schedule and is learning to let you know when he needs to go out. He sleeps well in a crate all night in the human's bedroom without complaint and is trustworthy to be uncrated during the day. Carter wants to find a forever home that can help him continue to learn that not everything is scary,  and help him expand his friend list! His shyness is endearing, and his sweet nature shines through once you get to know each other. Carter will require a slow introduction and his new family will need to be able to visit with him near Alexandria, VA, prior to his adoption being finalized. Story
Hello, my name is Phil, but my foster parents call me Phenomenal Phil! I am a healthy 6-7 year old boy, although I am a bit portly right now (I weigh 16 pounds...my ideal weight is around 10-12). I get along great with the other dogs in my foster home, and I also love people.  I walk politely on a leash, sleep quietly all night in my crate (even though I would just as soon sleep in bed with my humans), and love riding in the car. Oh, and did I mention I am house-trained?  After I get a bath, I go crazy with the zoomies, and it makes my humans laugh out loud.I am looking for a family who will help me continue my weight loss journey, give me belly rubs, love and cherish me, and think I am phenomenal.  Could that family be you?  Please visit this link to see more photos of me here: https://imageevent.com/newrattitude/phil.Beginning March 1, 2025, our adoption fee is $250 for adult dogs or $300 for puppies under 6 months old. Story
Hi my name is Smokey.  I am a super sweet and very active 1 year old Rat Terrier mix who weighs 11 lbs.  I am so greatful to Critter Cavalry and happy to be in the care of my foster mom Dawn.  I have gone through a lot in my short life.  My original family adopted me as a puppy.  They did not have a fenced in yard and just let me run around wherever I wanted.  Well one day I did not get out of the way quick enough and got hit by a car.  The people just drove off.  Fortuately my family came to get me immediately.  I was so distraught as both of my back legs were broken.  My family spent a lot of money trying to get me well but could not afford physical therapy on top of everything else.  Soon my legs began to hurt and I had trouble walking.  A neighbor knew of Critter Cavalry and  that is how I got here.  I have had additional surgery and excelled in my physical therapy.  I am now ready to find my forever home.  I have a blast with the other 2 small dogs in my foster home.  They played a very important part in my recovery.  I want to keep my muscles strong and my hips working properly so I need a home with another small dog my age and size to be my exercise buddy.  No big dogs for me please.  I am scared of them and bark at them.  I am a great little guy who is housebroken to a doggie door and crate trained.  I love to go for walks and love to run around in our fenced in yard and play games in the house.  If you are an active family and already have one little active girl or guy then you are the family for me.  I have been neutered and am current on all my shots and microchipped.  To be considered for my forever family and to request an application please contact Vivienne at viviennejames@comcast.net.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (I am currently in Tennessee and can be transported to my forever home upon adoption.)February 17, 2025, 9:25 pm
