Meet Howard, a 4 year old, trim and toned 22-pound Pug who redefines the meaning of "high energy." PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. Howard has lots of potential, but has behavioral issues that would likely benefit from a professional trainer and some medication for his mental health (trazadone, high quality cbd oil, etc). Howard is NOT your typical easygoing Pug, so if you’re looking for a chill couch potato or a social butterfly, Howard is NOT your guy. But if you're up for a lovable whirlwind who brings 24/7 chaos to your life, then buckle up buttercup – Howard is ready to be your new best friend! What is a purebred pug doing at a rescue? Howard's previous owners found themselves overwhelmed by his energy and behavior, which ultimately led to his surrender. Now we’re searching for an adopter with previous experience handling high spirited dogs– someone who knows exactly what it takes to manage a pup like Howard with kindness and a heart that won't crush his wacky personality. So don't let that cute smooshy face reel you in, Howard is LEVEL 10 during most of his waking moments. He’s like a little furry tornado, All GO, all the time (except for the 30 seconds it takes him to inhale his food like a Dyson). Toy boxes are his FAVE (next to food of course). He raids them like it’s Black Friday, gleefully flinging toys in every direction, determined to play with them all at once. Housebroken? Yes, but.... new places can take adjustment. Howard is still adjusting but appears to be housebroken. He would do great with a doggie door as he LOVES to be outside;. Smart? Oh yes. But also stubborn. This boy learned how to use 'potty bells' in a day. He will sit on command before diving on his food or treat (a major act of self discipline!) but in general, he listens when he wants to and pretends not to hear anything that doesn't suit him. Leash trained? Yes...and no. After attacking his leash in disbelieving joy...then darting to every tree and hydrant for the first half mile...he settles down and walks like a little gentleman (mostly). Cats & Other dogs? If you love or even like your cats, you don't want to inflict Howard on them but he has shown he can be VERY playful with other small dogs (he's in a foster home with both males and females and plays allllll day with any of them he can convince). This may not apply to larger dogs. In general, we think he's good with smaller, non-alpha dogs. General Temperment? WILD and wonderful. Howard is very sweet with his people...but he can be as spicy as an angry chihuahua with strangers. He is very protective of his home and needs to be introduced to new people cautiously (preferably with food to show they come in peace). This has to do with his history and is something to work on. This may improve greatly with a professional trainer. Crate trained? Well....This high-spirited boy was kept in a crate too often, had a major accident trying to free himself (dislocated hip that led to femur head removal) and now has crate anxiety. Howard has done well in a gated area of the home and (shockingly) has not destroyed a single thing when his foster parents have to go out, but crates are a no for him except at bed time. Men? Howard can be especially reactive to men (similar to strangers) due to previous abuse, but with lots of patience and kindness, he’s shown he can overcome it (previous owners were husband and wife). He thrives with a gentle, loving touch (and treats. don't forget the treats!). Because of his strength and high-energy antics, Howard is best suited for a home without small children or seniors. Let's be real—Howard’s a bit of a tank, and he needs someone who can handle his bulldozing spirit. He also needs someone who has the time and resources to work with him. And, as mentioned, maybe some really good meds.
