Story
Chato needs a foster—or even better, a foster-to-adopt home Chato is a 1-year-old male pug mix and one of the many sweet dogs in East San Jose who’ve spent most of their young lives outdoors. His family is ended up  letting him go , as the husband recently suffered a serious head injury and is preparing for surgery, while the wife is balancing everything alone—including caring for their 2-year-old (whom Chato absolutely adored). We met Chato, and thanks to a kind offer for temporary housing, the family felt safe surrendering him to our rescue. Now, this little guy is ready for the next chapter: a loving foster home—or even better, a foster-to-adopt family. Chato is friendly, affectionate, and still has that puppy sweetness. He loves playing with other dogs and his toys, but more than anything, he loves being near people—likely because he didn’t get to spend much time indoors or close to humans, having lived and slept in an outdoor kennel. He’s now neutered and fully up to date on vaccines. If you can open your heart and home to Chato, even temporarily while we search for his forever family, please reach out. Story
Pug / Dachshund Mix Age: ≈ 4 years old Female, spayed 15 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations) Cheerio came to the Sacramento County Shelter underweight and with an embedded foxtail in her neck. It was removed surgically, but post-op they had trouble stopping the bleeding. She tested negative for any blood clotting disorder - perhaps the surgery nicked an artery? Eventually, the bleeding stopped, but it left her anemic. The shelter needed a rescue group that specializes in medical cases to continue addressing her veterinary needs. Over time in foster care, her anemia improved and she gained her weight back. She is a very friendly, sweet dog. She likes attention and affection from her foster parents and volunteers. She likes roughhousing with the younger, larger dogs in her foster home. She doesn’t like being confined or kept away from the activities of the home. Crate training would be pretty difficult - lots of barking. Apartment living may not be the best option for her. We have no experience with her as an only dog. We would recommend that she go to a home with other playful, friendly dogs. Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13. Story
Meet Morgan, the 7 month old female pug mix! This medium sized cutie came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Morgan’s previous guardian said that she is very energetic. She enjoys chewing on things and should be provided with plenty of appropriate, safe chew options to encourage him to chew on dog-safe things and not household items. Her favorite thing to do in her previous home is go for runs. If there is an adopter looking for a pint-sized exercise companion – this may be your gal! Morgan does well riding in a car so joining you on adventures is on the to-do list. She is still perfecting life skills and manners like potty training so her new adoptive family should be patient in the transition. Morgan may do well in a home with other animals with a slow thoughtful introduction. Any resident dogs are recommended to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Casey is a 17 lb pug mix - like most pugs, Casey seems to be affectionate, playful, and adaptable. Casey had one of her eyes removed prior to coming to us due to a previous injury, which just makes her look even more unique! We are still getting to know her, but we can say this is one sweet girl.

Story
I adopted this guy when he was 6 months old. He will be 2 y/o in December. He's the normal bully sleeps during the day, snores really loud and chill demeanor. The only issue I have with him is that he can be bone aggressive. Just don't let bones get too short so you don't have to take out of mouth. Unsure about cats. He never chases squirrels. He has been around other dogs and never reacts. Had another dog and kind of played with her (she was feisty). You must have the experience of owning a bully. He's sweet, playful and loves short walks or his stroller to people watch. Plays with his toys. Doesn't bark. Healthy. Please NO young children because I worry if they try to snatch a bone or toy he may bite. He growls. So let's not risk it. I'm having to let him find a nice home because I now work long shifts and he loves companionship and cuddles. Rehoming fee to ensure stable and loving home.

While he’s still decompressing and has a few medical needs we're helping him through, Mack is already showing us what a loving, cuddly companion he is! Mack lives for his three daily walks, rides like a champ in the car, and can snooze just about anywhere. He’s also been an absolute star when it comes to his eye and skin care routines — what a good boy! We have a few procedures planned to help Mack live his healthiest, happiest life, and he’ll be ready to meet his forever family very soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this gentle sweetheart — his best days are just around the corner!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 20, 2025, 5:08 pm
