Story
Available for Adoption💜
After 5 months of being with me, this sweet pea is finally available for adoption! Aquarius is one of the most resilient dogs I have fostered. Watching her go from being the most shut down dog I’ve ever had, to watching her learn to love so many new things has been the most rewarding gift over these last few months and now it’s her time to shine!❤️
Name: Aquarius
Location of dog: Dundas, Ontario
Breed: Presa/Bully Mix
Weight: 60lbs
Gender: Female
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Age: Approx. 2
Energy Level: Low-Medium
Medical (shots etc): UTD on vaccinations
Microchipped: Yes
Good with dogs: Yes she loves dogs! She needs to be in a home with a confident dog(s) to learn from and play with! Currently fostered with a senior male and female who’s the same age and does great with them. She hasn’t had any negative reaction to other dogs since being with us and truly just loves other animals
Good with cats: Yes! She is extremely curious and playful (she even made friends with a toad!)
Good with kids: yes but older due to lack of experience with young kids
Good with strangers: yes with introduction - she is SO much better meeting people, if they respect her space until she feels comfortable (I tell people to not touch her right away and allow her to come to them). She usually sees how my dogs react to them and is starting to come around more and more
Guarding Issues: None
House Trained: Yes
Crate Trained: She doesn’t need one - Initially she had her own dog room with a crate to decompress but she never went in the crate, then I put a baby gate at the bedroom door so she could get more comfortable with movement in the house. Now, she is left out with my dogs and just pulls every toy out of the toy basket to play with and naps
Destructive: Nope!
Leash skills: Great - she is off leash trained with me and could easily be off leash trained with people/dogs she trusts. She just sticks with the pack and when she does wonder around she always comes back when called
Okay with manipulations: Yes with her trusted human. I can do anything and everything to her because she trusts me and knows she is safe (she naps while I give her manicures lol)
Known commands: none because she’s stubborn and gets too excited for treats lol her recall is pretty good and she does listen really well to correction, but when trying to teach her to sit, she just can’t contain how excited she is lol
Behaviour Issues: she does take time to warm up to new people due to her past but she is also doing so much better with confidence. She thrives off energy and confident people, because she still lacks a bit of confidence herself but feels safer with her trusted humans and dogs. Introductions are always done outside and I just tell everyone not to reach over her and allow her to come to them. She’s always with my dogs meeting new people and will observe their body language and how they interact with them (which is always good), and it seems to help her want to come to people for attention - she may play hard to get at first, but she’s truly just a big snuggle bug and just needs someone to continue showing her that all humans aren’t terrible
Medical issues: None
Other observations:
I was reached out by one of our amazing local shelters about Aquarius back in April when her future wasn’t looking so good, due to her shutting down in the shelter environment. This sweet girl spent the first year of her life tied to a chain in a backyard with other dogs, where they found themselves seized by animal welfare and living in an overcrowded shelter. This is where Aquarius sat for almost a year, shutting down and living in survival mode.
She never had anyone give her a chance, never had another show her love (except for shelter staff of course), she never had a safe place to lay her head. Sadly with how shut down she was and how much she avoided human interaction, she was unavailable to the public and it was up to a rescue to save her life. When I met Aquarius, I knew she didn’t have another way out; I was her only chance at a whole new life. The day I met her and the day I picked her up, she wanted nothing to do with me. She wouldn’t approach me, even when I sat down on her level avoiding eye contact. Most people meet dogs like Aquarius and wouldn’t give them the time of day because everyone wants a dog that is excited to meet them and they have that instant connection, but I want the dogs that make me work for their trust because they are the dogs that deep down have the most love. She is the prime example of that.
Aquarius has shown what love and patience can do, and it might have taken a couple of months but this is what dogs like her need. She went from a shaky shut down girl who didn’t trust a damn sole, to being one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. She is hilarious and gets her zoomies running like a free girl, she has a new obsession for dog toys (because she never played with any before), and is so good at keeping her self occupied. As long as she has toys around, you best believe she’s playing with them all! Aquarius plays so well with other dogs and has become part of my pack so naturally, she truly loves all animals she has met.
As sad as I will be to see this girl leave, I can not wait to see her flourish with her own family that loves her as much as I do, and sees the amazing dog she really is. She has worked so hard to leave her past behind her, and needs a family to continue to show her what life really is and take her on all the adventures she missed out on!
