Story
Foster update: Zia is a giant sweetheart. She is a lapdog at heart and doesn't know how large she is. She enjoys lounging on her bed, playing with the tennis ball, and loves squeaky toys. She does very well on walks and doesn't pull. She is a strong girl who loves to cuddle and be around humans.  Introducing Zia, an extra-large dog with an even bigger personality! This gentle giant may be a bit shy at first, but once she warms up to you, she reveals her sweet and playful nature that will melt your heart. Zia is a true delight, and her affectionate spirit shines through once she feels comfortable in her surroundings. Zia's impressive size means she requires a family with mastiff breed experience who can appreciate her unique needs. Due to her large stature, she is not recommended for homes with small children, as she could unintentionally knock them over during her playful moments. However, her playful antics and puppy-like bounce make her a joy to watch as she frolics around! This loving girl is looking for a patient and understanding home where she can thrive and continue to build her confidence. With a little time and love, Zia will become your loyal companion and best friend, ready to fill your life with joy and laughter. If you’re prepared to embrace the charm of this gentle giant and provide her with the loving home she deserves, come meet Zia today! She’s ready to embark on a wonderful journey of companionship and adventure with you!  Zia was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. Zia does have a prey drive, so cannot go into a home with cats. Mastiff breed experience required Meet and greets are by appointment only.  An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time.  When we do, it will be updated here.  This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above.  Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. Dogs adopted with our rescue come with FREE training from #GoodPup to help you build strong bonds from the start! If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free Pet insurance.  We are not affiliated with Pet First pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect).  Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico.  While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances.   More questions?  Read our FAQs here: https://4p4l.org/faqs/  Breed labels are a "best guess" by a shelter veterinarian and cannot be guaranteed.  A new study has concluded that (in layman's terms), breed assumption is NOT indicative of behavior in mixed breed dogs.  Therefore, if a dog looks presumably to be a German Shepherd breed, one cannot assume the dog will have a high prey drive.  From the study: "Although many physical traits were associated with breeds, behavior was much more variable among individual dogs. In general, physical trait heritability was a greater predictor of breed but was not necessarily a predictor of breed ancestry in mutts. Among behavioral traits, biddability—how well dogs respond to human direction—was the most heritable by breed but varied significantly among individual dogs. Thus, dog breed is generally a poor predictor of individual behavior and should not be used to inform decisions relating to selection of a pet dog" - https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abk0639 ##2263507##

Story
Ladies and gentlemen please put your hands together for BIGGIE, named after the famous Biggie Smalls! And yes, he does love it when you call him Big Papa. This gorgeous brindle boy is confident and loves to play with his canine foster siblings. He sleeps through the night in his kennel and is so close to being fully potty trained. Biggie loves a good chew, rope or plushy toy to occupy his time. He’s also a huge fan of anything cozy when it comes to blankets and beds. The number one thing on his wish list though is a big yard to run around in. Biggie is a very smart boy and is doing quite well with his training. If you have space in your heart and home with a passion for helping dogs be their absolute best, then Biggie could be your guy! He’s estimated at 4.5-5 months old and is presently 33 lbs. Biggie is in foster in Thornton, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/biggie You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.

Story
Meet Sabrina, a gentle 6-year-old Mastiff mix who’s in need of a special forever home. Sabrina is living with mast cell tumors (MCT) due to cancer and is currently on medication to keep her as comfortable as possible. She requires a loving home that is prepared to offer her hospice care and a peaceful environment. Sabrina can be shy with new people and may give a warning growl or snap if approached when she’s not ready. However, once she builds trust, she becomes deeply affectionate and very attached to her people. She gets along well with mellow dogs and will thrive in a calm household where she can feel safe and loved. If you have a compassionate heart and are ready to provide a supportive and caring home for a special dog like Sabrina, you’ll find a loyal and loving companion in her.

Story
Maya had been living in an orphanage outside Tijuana, Mexico- she was born and raised on the orphanage land. On the orphanage she played with dog friends, big and small, and kids of course! Maya is a total, sweetheart! She wanted us to add to her dating profile that she loves Mac & cheese and she does not love long walks on the beach- more like short cuddles on the couch. She has learned to use stairs in her foster home! In her foster home, Maya is still figuring out her place in the pack and seems a bit unsure of how to interact with other dogs. When she tries to play, she tends to be more focused on mouthing, jumping on, and humping in a way that comes across as dominant rather than playful, which can be a lil intimidating for other dogs & people. We can tell she really wants to play, but she needs to learn how to do it in a way that’s safe and appropriate. We’re working with her on this, but it’s something to consider if her future family has other dogs. Maya is being fostered in Foxfield, Colorado. ##2262848##

Story
Hello! Meet Dozer! This Mastiff mix is a big boy but he doesn’t let that stop him from wanting to be a lap dog!  Dozer is approx 2 years old and was found as a stray on the streets of San Antonio.  He is very sweet, friendly, energetic, affectionate, happy and playful. He loves running in the yard and playing with other dogs. He has been non reactive towards the resident vet clinic cat. He’s house trained, crate trained and loves kids but because he is unaware of his size he would do best in a home with older kids. He would make a great hiking companion and would do well with an active family.  Dozer is a big lovable boy with a lot of love to give! ##2305289##
