Story
Meet Callie! This little cutie has been in our care most of her life. She was born with excess fluid or “water on the brain” that caused blindness and was given to a family who was not equipped to care for her. They grew frustrated with her and didn't understand her behaviors or take her to the vet for further diagnosis. Callie was more subdued than most puppies and showed some early neurological signs, like circling, and had significantly limited vision, consistent with a condition called hydrocephalus. We took her to a neurologist and she was started on a medication that helps control symptoms of the condition and it has worked incredibly well. The mild neurological signs have abated and she's had no seizures on the meds and lives a mostly normal life. We can’t change the fact that she’s blind, but otherwise, she is symptom-free. Dogs with mild or moderate cases like Callie can live a healthy, happy full life. Callie has matured to be a self-sufficient, confident, loving pup, and while she can’t see, that’s all she’s ever known so she rolls with it.  Callie has adapted quickly to home life. She’s a smart, sweet dog who makes a wonderful companion She’s being fostered by Leah and Chris and has been living with their pack of 3 pups, both large and small. Callie has been good with every pup we’ve introduced her to and finds comfort in her dog business.  Our preference is for her to have a dog buddy in her new home, and she'll do best in a calmer neighborhood with each access in and out of the home. She can do small steps in and out of the home and is most comfortable with a yard or consistent potty area to explore. The only time we've seen her be hesitant is outside in loud or busy areas...so she's not an ideal city dog.  We checked in with her foster mom, Leah, for a quick update.  “Callie is very confident once she gets her bearings straight. She learned the layout of our home pretty quickly. She will explore to learn where everything is - especially the kitchen! The only times I've seen her be hesitant is when she is outdoors in a new spot for the first time - all of the smells and noises can be a little intimidating. As with most blind dogs, her other senses are very strong.  She can smell peanut butter in another room! She integrated into our home very quickly. She found the toys - she likes tuggy ones, Nylabones, and the stuffed toys that make the crinkle sounds - but her absolute favorite toys were my slippers. They had little pouf balls on them and she enjoyed ripping the balls off (which was totally okay they were cheapies off Amazon). She may have a foot fetish... hehe. She tries to play with my dogs but mine are Mean Golden Girls so not much luck there..She’s a very playful, fun dog and would have loved a canine playmate in her new home.  She’s also very snuggly and likes to cuddle on the couch with you and gives lots of kisses. We taught her to "walk" on a leash outside the home, but she needs treats to make her move along. She loves to explore the backyard which is familiar terrain. She’s really good about peeing outside and now she’s pooping outside too. She learned to go up steps quickly and we have trained to use our 4 front steps into the house and then the doggie steps to the couch. I think she can see some shadows. Honestly, you sometimes forget she's blind because she doesn't act all that impaired. She is a really happy-go-lucky dog with lots of energy and love to give. We need someone special to take this sweet little nugget. She's one smart cookie" Apply today to learn more! Story
NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Meet Birdie! This adorable little nugget was being given away on social media by her owners, who were leaving town the very next day and needed a quick solution. One of our team members saw the post and immediately stepped in to help. Birdie’s past has been unstable—she was originally rescued from a friend who kept her in their garage. After that, she spent the past year living in a long-haul truck and the last four months in a motel. With a new baby on the way and a big move to Greenville, her owners decided not to take her along. While little thought went into finding a safe solution for her, we’re grateful we were able to get her to safety  Now in foster care, Birdie is thriving! She shares her home with a senior pup and a few kitties. While the senior dog isn’t too interested in her, she’s made friends with the cats and enjoys trying to play with them. She’s been a wonderful house guest—fully house-trained, content being crated or in a gated area when left alone, and a sound sleeper through the night. She has no destructive tendencies and settles in easily. The biggest challenge so far has been her diet—she seems to prefer human food, especially eggs and kosher hotdogs! We suspect this was her primary diet before rescue, so transitioning her to a more well-balanced diet is a work in progress. Birdie has a delightful personality—sweet, social, and moderately energetic. She enjoys backyard time, watching birds and squirrels, playing fetch, and zooming around the yard. She would likely do best in a home with another small, playful pup to match her fun-loving spirit. Her foster mom will be working on leash training this week to see how she does on walks. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 4/12/25 "Birdie is full of playful energy and would thrive in a home with another pup buddy to romp around with or a family that’s ready to engage and play with her regularly. She loves her dog bed and her toys, often gathering them up to snuggle with in bed. Whether indoors or out in the yard, she entertains herself easily, happily tossing toys or gazing at birds and squirrels with wide-eyed wonder. Rabbits may get a chase, but mostly, she just loves being outdoors, soaking it all in. Because of her background, Birdie will need a patient and attentive owner to help her work through some food sensitivities. In her previous home, she was only fed human food, which has made her a bit picky. I'ave had some success with salmon-based wet food, and consistency has been key. Birdie is still adjusting to walks. I use a harness when I walk her, but she is a bit hesitant when walking solo—likely due to all the new sights and sounds in a busy neighborhood. She’s led a very sheltered life, coming from living full-time in a truck, so even the size of my house was overwhelming at first. A confident dog buddy would go a long way in helping her feel secure and enjoy her walks more. Birdie is such a special pup, and she’s ready to find a home where she can feel safe, play freely, and finally relax." ****** Birdie is ready to find a forever home where she can finally have the stability, love, and care she deserves. Could that be with you? She will be coming to town on 4/26.  Apply today! Story
Meet Little Ritchie! This charming pup was rescued as a stray by two Good Samaritans who found him lingering near a Food Lion close to one of our vet partners. They brought him to the clinic to be scanned for a microchip, and that’s when one of the kindhearted vet techs, Jacob, stepped in to help. Jacob took Little Ritchie home, contacted the local shelter, and posted him on social media in hopes that someone would come forward—but no one ever did. Little Ritchie spent his stray hold safe and loved in Jacob’s care. When it became clear no one was coming for him, Jacob reached out to Worthy Dog to help find him the forever home he deserves. Now in his foster home, Little Ritchie is living with three senior dogs and multiple cats. He had an easy introduction to the pack and was respectful, though he initially kept to himself. After a couple of weeks to settle in, he started to follow the other dogs around the yard, chase the occasional squirrel, and bark at those ever-suspicious neighbors. He’s done well with most of the cats, though he needed a little more time and guidance to adjust. He may give chase here and there, but he’s easily redirected and improving each day. Little Ritchie is a mellow, sweet-natured boy who could thrive either as a solo pup or with a canine companion. He hasn’t shown much interest in toys or play yet, but he’s also living with older dogs who aren’t exactly inspiring any zoomies. With a more playful pup around, we might see a different side of him emerge. His favorite things? Being close to his people, soaking up the sunshine in the backyard, hopping into the car for a ride, and curling up in his foster mom’s lap under a blanket like a little burrito. That’s his definition of a perfect day. Little Ritchie is crate trained and has never had an accident in his crate. He also understands going potty outside and has started going to the door when he needs to go out. When he was first settling in, he did mark inside the home. His foster mom has used a belly band to help manage that, but is starting to give him more trust and freedom, and seeing improvement.  It's a process.   We checked in with his foster mom for a quick update.  “Overall, Little Ritchie is a perfect mellow little guy who is just a really sweet companion pup. Aside from the belly band early on (which really wasn’t a big deal), he’s an easy-going little guy. I think he would love an older family who was home more and possibly another doggie pal.  I think he would really be a good companion dog to go out and take places, as long as the environment wasn't too chaotic. He’s the ultimate lap snuggler. We love him so much and are so grateful he’s safe with the rescue and no longer out there on his own.” Little Ritchie is a loving companion who’s ready to share life’s simple pleasures with someone special.
