There are three types of Podengo Portugueso (small, medium, and large) but only the Hound group is currently registered in the AKC. The others are in the "Miscellaneous" AKC class.

This breed has two types of coats, both rough and smooth. The water-resistant smooth coated breeds are more commonly found in wetter northern Portugal, whereas the wire-haired versions are usually found in the more arid parts of the country.

The Podengo Portugueso is the national dog of Portugal.
