Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their size in a group setting, and dog meet-and-greets with the adopter's dog(s) are always encouraged. A cat test may be conducted at the adopter's request but should only be used as a general-purpose screening to rule out overt aggression. We always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendations on the suitability of placement with children by their ages are based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavioral observations in the shelter environment should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at a given point in time and may not be indicative of a dog's overall mental health. The Joplin Humane Society believes all adopters need to be prepared to invest time and energy into working with their new dog, as animals arrive at the shelter from a variety of situations and scenarios and may have had little to no prior training. Dogs should never be fed together unless it is known that they do not possess resource-guarding tendencies. We always encourage adopters to research the breeds or mixes of breeds before adoption as many can have unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Keep in mind that the transition from the shelter to a home environment is stressful for dogs, and the Rule of 3 should be used as a rule of thumb when introducing a dog to their new surroundings. For the first 3 days, fear, anxiety, and stress levels are at their highest; and dogs may appear lethargic, remain hidden, are easily excitable, or have a loss of appetite. In the next 3 weeks, dogs will be actively developing a routine, and new personality traits may appear as stress levels decrease. During this period, it is recommended that adopters limit the dog's exposure to new people and places as they adjust and keep them in a crate or designated quiet room when left alone. Time outside of the home should be short, and crowds or loud noise should be avoided. After 3 months, a bond has developed between the dogs and their new family, and the animal should appear more comfortable in unfamiliar situations. Meet this pretty girl who was returned after she had been adopted as a puppy. She is now 4 yrs old and looks like a plott hound mix. She is such a good girl, house broke, crate trained but wouldn't need to be crated. She likes to greet you by gently jumping up on you and giving you hugs and kisses. She is good with other dogs and walks nicely on a leash. She knows some basic commands and is just the sweetest. She would love a fenced in yard and also would like to hang out with you and be chill. We got Theon from the KC Pet Project 2 years ago. He instantly rubbed up against our 3 year old and rolled over for belly rubs. He is house trained. He understands the command "sit". Hello there, I'm Cletus. I was found roaming. I will be on a 5 day stray hold until 9/30 in case my owners come forward. I'm around 10 years old and look to be a Plott Hound/Heeler mix but the shelter doesn't know for sure. I've been around the block a few times, seen a thing or two. I'm an old soul, calm as a summer breeze. I enjoy slow walks, sunbathing, and a good belly rub. I'm all about companionship and taking it easy. I'm a friend who'll be by your side, a steady presence to brighten your days. If you're looking for a faithful friend with a gentle spirit, I'm your guy. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets!
