Story
Rocky is a handsome, 7 yr old, 14 lb. Pekingese.  Rocky is an attentive, happy, and playful Pekingese who just happens to be mostly blind. He can see some shadows and movement but must be leashed-walked so he doesn’t bump into anything.  Rocky is very happy and learns to navigate his surroundings quickly.  This little guy’s favorite activities are breakfast, dinner, walking 2-4 times/day, playing with toys, and of course TREATS! He has an uncanny sense of finding the toy baskets in the house.  He absolutely LOVES to ride in the car (seat-belted in of course). Rocky’s ideal home is quiet, with an experienced Peke owner, and an only dog. His owner will be a special person who understands his disability and Peke disposition and is willing to work with him.  Like most Pekes, he takes a while to warm up to new people but once you earn his trust, you are his person!  He must be monitored every 6 months to ensure he hasn’t developed glaucoma. Rocky is on inexpensive anti-inflammatory drops (Neo-Poly-Dex) for his right eye.  Rocky is a good patient at the vet. The adoption range for this dog is limited to NC, SC, VA and East TN. Story
Henry is a 3-year-old, 12 lb. Pekingese mix.  We have no clue what Henry might be mixed with, perhaps Corgi, due to his long body and short legs, but he has a silky soft coat.   Henry walks nicely on a leash and is completely housetrained. Henry likes to be where his person is and will follow you from room to room. Henry is a low-maintenance dog and happy to sit on a chair or dog bed near you while you work or watch TV.  Henry does get underfoot so you have to look before you move. Henry will also try to herd people and other dogs, so he must have some kind of herding breed in his genes.     Henry gets along with other small dogs and will wrestle and play with one who wants to do the same. If there is another dog in the home, it should weigh 16 pounds or less.   Henry is quick and his herding attempts (poking at the back of your ankles) make him a trip hazard, at the same time he is low-key and a really easy dog to share your home with.   The adoption range for this dog is limited to NC, SC, VA and East TN. If you are interested in adopting this dog, contact h2hadoptions@gmail.com. There is an application process and adoption fee.   WE REQUIRE AN ALL-ADULT HOME (NO YOUNG CHILDREN) WITH A SECURELY FENCED YARD FOR HENRY'S ADOPTIVE HOME.  The secure fence must be 4ft or higher, with gaps no greater than 2 ½ inches and attached to the home.  An invisible fence, enclosed patio, terrace or deck, temporary fencing, dog pens or dog lots or community shared fencing (dog park) are NOT considered secure fencing. If your fencing has "puppy pickets" (or is supplemented with garden fencing) it needs to be at least 36 inches high from the ground up AT THE LOWEST POINT.  No exceptions. We are an all-volunteer organization, and in addition to saving dogs, we have other responsibilities, so we appreciate your patience and understanding during this process. Story
Jax is the cutest, tiniest Pekingese you’ll ever see. Jax is around 8 years old and weighs in at 6lbs, but has a huge personality. He is one of the most self-confident little dogs we have ever met.  Nothing seems to scare or startle him which can have its upsides and downsides.   Jax was a little “spicy” when he first came to our rescue, but now that he has had some dental extractions and learned that people are going to be nice to him, he is getting much better about being picked up and put down by his foster mom. He guards things he puts in his mouth, so we ask that his adopter be patient and work with him while he continues learning to trust. Jax still hates to have his bum wiped or touched and will let you know by trying to bite you.  Jax likes to be petted and seeks attention and affection.    Jax is doing well with his housetraining and will use a pee pad if available.  He should be leashed-walked because he wants to put things in his mouth, like acorns (which are toxic to dogs), so he does not necessarily need a fenced yard, although a small tidy fenced yard would be great.   He has short little legs and can climb a few steps but cannot do a flight of stairs, so a home where he can walk out into the yard without having to navigate more than 2 steps is by far the best.  He really prefers to take himself in and out (while on a leash) versus being carried.  We prefer his new owner to be familiar with the Pekingese breed. Jax would do best being the only dog in the home; however, if you have another tiny dog who doesn’t mind getting bossed around (especially initially) and will not retaliate when Jax is inappropriate (which he will be), then coexisting is certainly possible.  He learned to get along and was less of a bully after slow introductions to a few other small dogs in his foster home.  Although, if you have a "lap for one," then Jax may be just right for you.  Jax sleeps happily in a crate in his foster parent's bedroom; they do not have him sleep in their bed since he is so tiny and could easily fall off and get severely injured.  He also rides nicely crated in the car. Story
Pika Pika is an energetic, happy 2-year-old Pekingese who weighs about 10 lbs. As you can see from her photos, she is missing one eye but that does not hold this little girl back. Her favorite activity is dragging dog beds around the house, and then rolling in and under the dog beds.  If you know the Pekingese breed, these rolling and "redecorating" activities are most likley familar to you.   Pika Pika is shy when meeting new people (particularly men), but once she’s comfortable, her puppy-like personality shines. She loves to play with the other small dogs in her foster mom’s home. We prefer her adopter have experience with the Pekingese breed and be aware of how important it is to keep her safe so nothing happens to her good eye. She is doing well with house training and leash walking, but loud noises or strange objects can startle her on walks and she will balk.  Pika Pika will do best in a home with another small social dog, preferably Pekingese, so she can continue to watch and learn from the other dog.  She walks best when she’s with a social doggie companion.  She is VERY fast shooting out the door, can jump high and gets really fired up doing yard and house zoomies, especially in the afternoon and evening before dinner and "sofa-time."  Her foster mom can barely get meals ready fast enough for her. Pika Pika tries to help by demand-barking, but if that doesn't work, then bed dragging is her second choice.    WE REQUIRE AN ALL-ADULT HOME WITH A SECURELY FENCED YARD.  The secure fence must be 4ft or higher, gaps no larger than 1 1/2 inches, which is attached to the home.  An invisible fence, enclosed patio or terrace without grass, temporary fencing, dog pens or dog lots or community shared fencing (dog park) are NOT considered secure fencing. If your fencing has "puppy pickets" (or is supplemented with garden fencing) it needs to be at least 36 inches high from the ground up AT THE LOWEST POINT. No exceptions.  The adoption range for this dog is limited to NC, SC, VA and East TN.
