Story
Meet Moche! Moche is being fostered here at the rescue in east TN. Out of state welcome however you would need to come here to meet him. He is not eligible for transport only because he is so fearful of new people. His story is quite sad actually. Keep in mind he is such a sweet boy once you establish trust with him. He is more of a ladies man and here is why. He was adopted from us back in 2020, born at the beginning of December 2019 or the end of November 2019. He had two siblings and their names at the time were Twix-his sister, Butterfinger-his brother and his name was Snickers. He was adopted and we did everything right with the adoption process and it was a great home with a woman who loved him dearly. Covid came and his owner’s world sort of changed and he was never given the chance to meet new people or other dogs or even go anywhere. He stayed home with his one human and his best friend a kitty, He snuggled with this kitty and they were besties. His owner contacted us a couple of weeks ago and said she had to return him and not because she wanted to but because it was the best thing for him. She had been overcome with mental health issues, there was a death in her family and she was facing eviction, She could not take care of him anymore because she couldn’t take care of herself. His first few days here were very difficult because he was terrified of us and of everything new. Since he was used to a woman he warmed up to the female of the house by the fourth day and allowed petting. Now that he trusts her he is a snuggle bug and begs for attention using his paw to tap for attention and loves to give you his tummy for tummy rubs. He is taking considerable time to warm up to the man of the house but is getting better. We feel confident that if you allow him time he will be the same with you. It’s not his fault at all for the lack of socialization he never got. He was fearful for his life in those first few days. Six years with one person and a best friend kitty. No vet visits, no visits to family or friends and no one came over to visit. He had no clue what other humans were or if they meant harm or not. We are working with him to help him overcome his fear and exposing him to new people and new things. What he needs is time and patience and a loving owner who will help him with his new life and learn to love what the world has to offer. The perfect new home would ideally be with a single woman. He is amazing with cats and dogs so if you have other pets that would just be a bonus for him. This person would need to be patient and give him a few days to trust and must also be willing to help him learn what the world is about by taking him places, having visitors (they don’t need to pet him he just needs to know their presence is not a threat). He is not aggressive at all he will not run across the room and attack he will hide in the corner in fear. If they ignore him and allow him to meet them on his terms he will eventually be fine with them. He really is a precious soul who was dealt a really bad hand in the card game of life. He needs someone to love him and show him the world is not to be feared but to be enjoyed. He will be current on vaccines, he is chipped, he will be heartworm tested and we feel pretty confident it will be negative. He is crate trained however he doesn’t really need to be crated because he is so well behaved inside the house. He will potty outside and understands when you tell him to go potty. He is so well mannered on a leash. We were excited that he was ok with the other dogs. He had not met another dog since he was a baby at about 8 weeks of age when he knew his siblings. He now isl excited with the other dogs and is starting to play with them as well. Please consider this precious boy and give him a chance. We also train dogs and he will come with all the training advice and free sessions (here with us in Athens or online virtually) that you could ever need for him. Apply at Petpath.org

Story
Meet Freya, a stunning 4-year-old, 50-pound Norwegian Elkhound who embodies everything people love about this ancient and noble breed. With her soft coat, expressive eyes, and gentle spirit, Freya is one of those dogs who quietly wins your heart before you even realize it’s happening. She can be shy and a little nervous when meeting new people, but once she understands that you’re kind and safe, she opens up beautifully. Freya quickly becomes a devoted companion who wants to stay close, soak in affection, and share her sweet, loving nature. Those tender moments—when she melts into you after hearing she’s a “pretty girl”—are just priceless. Freya enjoys toys and balls, though she prefers her own style of play. Fetch isn’t her passion, but she loves batting her ball around, scooping it up, and prancing proudly with it. A securely fenced yard is ideal for her, giving her space to explore, run, and show off her adorable zoomies. Like many Elkhounds, she thrives in cooler weather and will happily go in and out of the door for fresh air as often as you’ll allow. This smart girl is both crate trained and potty trained. She absolutely loves spending time outdoors with her people and finds the world endlessly fascinating—especially birds, squirrels, and anything that moves just fast enough to keep her attention. She has seen a cat in her foster home and is quite intrigued and focused; we are happy to continue cat-testing for any adopter who needs clarity. Norwegian Elkhounds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, confidence, and strong bond with their families. Freya is a wonderful example of all these qualities and is ready to give her heart to someone who will appreciate her gentle soul and steady devotion.
