Story
Kramer is a 5 year old Newfypoo (Newfoundland/Poodle mix) who was surrendered to rescue when his owner could no longer care for themselves. This was a big adjustment for him, understandably, but he has been doing well in his foster home. He seems to be very unhappy when crated. So, we are using a larger indoor kennel for now, when we need to leave for short periods. When we are home, we allow him free roam of the house, and he has been sleeping on the floor of our bedroom at night with no issues. He is fully housetrained and has excellent housemanners. He knows not to jump on furniture, does not jump up on countertops and hasn’t played with or chewed on inappropriate objects. In fact, so far the only negative behavior we’ve seen from him is what seems to be an anxiety thing – always wanting to be near his people throughout the day, and has a tendency to jump up on people, on occasion. We’re working with him on this. This could be simply due to his unexpected move to a new home and we are hoping he can work through this with time, love and a little confidence. For this reason, and due to his size, he may be best in a home with older children and adults. He does well on the leash. He doesn’t pull hard, but due to his size, anyone walking him will need to be able to handle occasional pulling, leaning, or walking in the way of his handler. He gets along extremely well with other dogs. He takes the submissive approach when meeting new dogs, and when initiating play. When his invitation is accepted, he will play as gently or aggressively as his partner prefers. (Again, due to his size, he may inadvertently play too roughly with smaller dogs). He is also very good at keeping himself entertained. It appears that he has been an only dog, and has developed some games to play alone that he enjoys. One is tossing a tennis ball and running to catch it himself, or pushing/chasing anything that rolls. He has been exposed to cats, and has only shown friendly curiosity with them. We will continue to monitor this and update if we notice anything further. It appears that he has a good amount of energy when playing outside but is much calmer indoors. He seems to be well trained – so far, we have noticed that he understands “sit”, “shake” and “lie down” and “leave it”. He takes treats enthusiastically yet gently. When he's feeling lovey, he enjoys giving big hugs. If you've ever wondered what it's like to hug a fluffy human-sized teddy bear, this is it! This boy has only been in rescue a short time, but is already showing signs of being a very well-behaved, lovable and smart boy. He is ready to find his forever family, where he can regain confidence and stability for the rest of his life. If this sounds like you, please apply today!
