Name: Toby Best Guess for Breed: Poodle mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of February 2025 Gender: Male Approximate Weight: 53 lbs Gets Along With: He gets along with other dogs. We haven't seen him with kids or cats but he can be tested if you have them. Currently Living At: Lucky Dog's South Carolina rescue campus; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here after completing heartworm treatment. Special Adoption Considerations: Toby is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Toby is Looking For: His forever family! This sweetie landed in the shelter through no fault of his own and he's eager to once again have his own humans for long sniffy walks, romps in parks, and all the adventures they can dream up. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed sound good to him too. And Toby was heavily matted - mats are painful!! - when he arrived, and had to be shaved down completely. That coat is high maintenance, requiring daily brushing and regular professional grooming. He wants humans who understand that mats hurt and take good care of his coat. In exchange, he promises adoring gazes and all the love and loyalty in him. What do you say? Is this sweetie the one you see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: We will update this once he has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with his foster. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
