Story
Update:  Poppy is over a year old and has been here since just a pup and although she loves all us humans from a distance she doesn't care to be touched and if cornered, will nip.  It is very unusual for us to decide to make a dog so young a Joyful sanctuary pet but that is what we've decided to do for Poppy.  She is amazing with all the other dogs, she comes when called and acts just like a normal dog until someone tries to touch her.  The most touch she's welcome has been on her own terms and she will give a quick lick of a hand to the humans here with it on her terms and she will lie against Joye's legs, but still no touchy, touchy.  If by some miracle this girls turns around with time we will alter her description.  Poppy was born about May 15, 2025 and will likely top out about 25 lbs.  This girl came to us as an 8 week old puppy that a breeder couldn't sell because she had a 'bit' of an attitude.  A concerned person knew of this and took Poppy home to try to find a home for her but things weren't going very well with her 'attitude' and this person gave us a call the day before she had an appointment for behavior euthanasia.  Joyful does love a challenge now and then so we were glad to give her a soft place to fall.  We will never understand what happened to this baby to make her so protective around humans when she was so fantastic with all the other dogs.  Could the behavior been caused organically???  It's been several months now and we are just getting her on line because one of us can touch her now.  Yes, just one of us and it is always on her terms.  She can be sleeping next to the person (me) and I can pet her face, her body, legs and fondle her adorable little paws.  She will wake sometimes and look at me as if to say 'if you must' and then falls back asleep.  She adores rough housing with the other dogs and when I reach out and touch her unexpectantly when doing so you'd think had gotten an electric shock as she jumps in the air, glares at me and runs off.  There is a guy here that sits in a lazy boy type chair and she now stands up with her front feet on his legs and stares at him just daring him to reach out, but he doesn't and this is becoming more of a thing and someday....someday....she just may jump in his lap but it will be on her terms as always.  She watches all of us often and is always nearby.  She obviously has feelings for us but they are misguided at times when I'm walking through the house and she jumps up and nips my butt!!!!   Then she started doing this to the other woman who is taller so she can only get her thigh - it hurts and we are saying 'Poppy NO!' but we are not sure she cares.  She has not done this to the man yet, lucky him.     Poppy is a smart little thing and started using the dog door like a pro but that doesn't mean she's house trained and she does often us a potty floor pad.  She's never had a collar or leash on yet as that is going to take a couple people, a couple towels, and some bravery.  Even I still had to 'trap' her to be able to pick her up as we must every few months for her to be shaved down.  Oddly enough this has always gone pretty well and once she's up and on the table she freezes and let's it happen.     Are we really looking for a home for Poppy?  I'm not sure, it would have to be with special humans in a safe environment.  We all do love her and have enjoyed seeing her progress and the love for us that we see in her eyes.  When outside she is the life of the party with everyone else and she has no idea she is so much smaller than many.  She's rough and tumble for sure!  We do love her and she is welcome to stay as long as she needs even if that is forever because that is part of what Joyful Rescues does so well. Story
Jake was born about March 1, 2025 and weighs about 10lbs.  He was lovingly raised in a home with an elderly woman that has become to ill to care for him any further and we are so happy that she chose us to find a forever home for this cutie!  Jake has been around women more than men but is happy to welcome anyone in his circle.  He's hasn't been around any children, but he is overtly happy-go-lucky and should be fine with any.  He is wonderful with the other dogs and will roll around and wrestle with anyone willing including the much larger dogs as they lay down roll around and he rolls around on top of them - so cute!  We are told he does bark at cats which may be a deterrent for some cats and their humans.  As with so many of these small dogs he is not completely house trained as she tried at first but then could not get him out as often as needed and there were at some point potty floor pads used for him and another dog.  He does beautifully in the car and greeted me with all sorts of wiggles and happy whimpering.  He is fine on leash but may wander happily if left on his own.  He has been very healthy and will be going to a veterinarian for his first time soon after arrival.  Jake is a major love bug and will be in your lap for interaction and napping.  He is playful, loves toys, and will entertain with exuberance.  He adores romping and wrestling with other dogs and has no idea how little he is.  Jake is now ready to move forward and find new humans to love and care for him the rest of his life.  Jake came to us with his fur a 'bit' out of control and he appears to be non-shed so taking him to a groomer every 6-8 weeks will take time and may seem expensive.   The Adoption Fee for this dog is $_600.00_. Story
Gavin was born around February 2, 2023 and weighs about 7 pounds. Gavin was used and disregarded by a backyard breeder and thankfully found his way to Joyful Rescues.  Gavin rides well in the car and will be an amazing family member for the right home.  Gavin has lived a very isolated and likely abusive life and is very shy at first, but never aggressive.  Gavin will wiggle and wag when a trusted person talks to him, and you can see he desperately wants to trust and love us. We will be looking for a home with another fun, confident dog in it to help Gavin come out of his shell. We are also going to say no children under 13.  Potty training will be a work in progress, but he's a smart little dude, and with the proper patience and guidance, he should get the hang of it quickly.  We do always recommend considering potty floor pads for these little dogs to just make life easier for everyone.  We can't wait for you to meet him!   Foster Mom Update: Gavin has been a fun addition to my home. He has a shy, sweet disposition with me, and I am slowly gaining trust in him. The other dogs here help him to realize that I am a nice human. He has a different relationship with each of the dogs in the house. Some of the bigger, louder ones he is unsure of. His favorite playmate is an older Chihuahua. He likes to play a lot and his favorite game is tug. Specifically, trying to get a bathrobe tie off of a bathrobe! Keeps him busy for a while! He talks ( not barks) to get your attention. He is working on housetraining with potty pads. He is very quiet on social outings, rides well in the car, and is crate trained.     The Adoption Fee for this dog is $600.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Ralphie was bought from a breeder 4 years ago by my mother in law. He was her dog until she moved to a place that doesn’t allow dogs. We have tried to keep him, but he doesn’t get along with our dogs. We have tried to make it work, but feel like it isn’t going to happen. He’s sweet with kids and people and very protective of his family. I feel he might thrive in the right house with either no dogs or different dogs. Hopefully there is a home out there perfect for him.
