Hello! I am Boomer! I was found outside all on my own, shockingly tied to a mailbox! The police had to pick me up and I was very afraid, but they were nice and offered me lots of yummy treats. I was really unsure at first when I got to the shelter, but I quickly made friends and felt safe with my new humans. When I am happy, I have super duper awesome wiggles! I wag my tail, wiggle all over, and jump on you in excitement. Because I was a stray, not much is known about my past. I would do best in a family that has owned a large breed like me, something similar to other mastiff breeds or guardian breeds. I need slow introductions to strangers, but I am already showing that once I know you, we are besties forever. I have never been around kids or cats. I`m a big goofy boy and I am very curious, always sniffing everything around me. If you are looking for a hunky lovebug, come meet me today! If this dog has been successful in our play groups it is not a guarantee that a dog will be social with other dogs in their home or in public settings. I was seized from my owner by the pound after I was found to be living in very deplorable conditions in which I was being terribly abused and neglected. I was being starved, kept in a crate in my own waste with dog food just where I couldn't get to it that was being fed to my friend Carmel whenever they felt like it (she was also neglected, but cared for better than me). When I was taken out of my crate, I was used at a punching bag whenever they deemed fit, according neighbors that had witnessed my abuse. When I first came in, I was pretty nervous around new people and it took me some time to adjust, but now that I am used to the people and the routine here, I have settled in and I am such a sweet and happy boy. I have been happy and friendly with all of the people here at the pound and all of the new people I've met. The first 2 photos are from 1 month after my arrival. The second 2 are the day I arrived. What a difference! I seem pretty unsocialized with other dogs and although I've been great with my friend Carmel, I don't really know how to act around other dogs so far. They are pretty scary to me so I try to act tough. I may end up needing more than one meet and greet with another dog before I am okay to go home with them, or I may just not be compatible with some dogs, so families interested in me may need do more than one meet and greet with me before I can go home with you. I would do best with a family that can give me structure and proper training and guidance. If you're looking for a sweet dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Our adoption fee is $152. We accept cash, check or credit/ debit cards for adoption fees. If you pay using a credit or debit card, a convenience fee of 2.39% will also be applied. One Check will be for the dog license, and one will be for your dog's adoption fee, which includes heartworm testing (for dogs 6 months of age old and older), parvo/distemper vaccine, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, 3 days of panacur de-wormer, spay or neuter surgery, microchip, and a current Ohio dog license. We DO offer foster to adopt. (We will NOT accept cash for foster to adopt). We highly recommend you do a foster to adopt with your new dog if you are not 100% sure your new dog is going to work out in your home. Foster to adopt gives you a couple of weeks with the dog to make sure they are a good fit with your family before your payment is processed and the adoption is finalized. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. We try our absolute hardest to never have to euthanize for space and have not had to do so for many years thanks to the ongoing support from the public and high adoption rates. HISTORY: One owner who did not provide basic medical care so Izzy lived many year with out of control skin issues, ear infections, UTI’s, etc. PERSONALITY: Izzy is a sweet, friendly girl that loves meeting new people and welcoming them into the house. She loves attention and affection and will lean in hard for pets and ear scratches. She tends to spend her days snoozing away but when she gets the zoomies she takes them seriously and this girl can move despite her age.  She lives peacefully with a 60lb male mixed breed but is reactive when seeing dogs out on a walk. Izzy is a bit fearful of fireworks and thunderstorms and will sometimes get spooked by loud noises. Izzy likes things to happen on her own personal timeline and can be stubborn when they don’t. She will test limits by whining and carrying on (dancing around, stomping her feet, wagging her tail furiously while staring at you) to try to get her way. She’s learning that those things don’t work in our house but it’s hard not to laugh at her antics. She’ll do it to the other dog in the house too when he’s laying in a bed that she wants. She usually gets her way with the dog.  FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Napping, soaking up love and attention, laying in the sun MEDICAL ISSUES: With vet care and a quality diet Izzy’s skin issues and ear infections have cleared up and she is no longer a big itchy mess. She did have a mammary tumor removed while being spayed. She is not currently on any medications. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: Izzy enjoys hanging out with her people, so a family that spends a lot of time around the house/yard/garden would be great for her. Once integrated with another dog she is very polite and respectful but she definitely needs slow introductions to new dogs. Elphie came to Mastiffs to Mutts from a shelter in Arkansas in early December. Like her namesake, Elphaba Thropp from “Wicked”, she is a sweet, intelligent and feisty girl who is guaranteed to be the best friend you could ever want to have. Likes: Elphie LOVES to play and snuggle with humans and with other dogs. She loves toys, especially the interactive kind that can provide her with enrichment and prevent her from getting bored. She also loves nothing more than to snuggle up on a couch or a big, fluffy dog bed. Dislikes: Elphaba is a pretty easy going girl. Her only real dislikes currently are being by herself, and the basement steps. Personality: (goofy, laid back, playful, etc) Elphie is a silly, playful girl. She is also an extremely clumsy “bull in a china shop”, and her big giant feet that she doesn’t seem to know exactly what to do with don’t help matters, so you would do best keeping fragile belongings well out of her way. She won’t mean to break them, but stuff happens when you are just an awkward puppy! She’s young and impulsive, so like any typical puppy, when she gets bored, she will get into mischief. She will probably steal, ESPECIALLY if you leave things in the sink. Because stealing things out of the sink is her current favorite naughty thing to do. She is working on her training so she can learn to tone it down though, and she is super smart and eager to please. Her perfect family would be patient with her, and continue her training, and refrain from scolding her by yelling at her. Her feelings get hurt very easily, and she will sulk for days if you yell at her. Temperament: Elphaba is very relaxed and social with every person she meets. She has not yet gotten the chance to interact with children, but based on her interactions with all the different people she has met thus far, we are expecting to see that she is just as gentle and loving with tiny humans as she is with larger ones. She doesn’t startle easily, and has been very laid back on walks, despite the fact there is ongoing water main construction right now in her foster family’s neighborhood. She has not seemed bothered in the least by all the construction equipment and the noise it makes. She is also unphased by the doorbell and deliveries to her foster home, even though two of her three foster siblings are nowhere near as calm. Energy level: (likes daily hikes, walks three miles, prefers to be a couch potato, etc) Elphie has an energy level typical of a young dog. She will run around and play like a lunatic, then sleep like she’s dead for hours. She really enjoys running laps around the fenced in backyard in her foster home, alone or with her foster siblings. If she doesn’t have other dogs or toys with her though, she will try to jump up on her human companions to get them to join in play. She is being trained not to jump up, but in the meantime, giving her a toy to chase after and grab is really helpful in avoiding her human friends ending up covered in her muddy paw prints. Favorite activities: Elphie loves to play play play! She also enjoys walks with her dog friends, and snuggling with her favorite people. Oh, and don’t forget snacks. She LOVES a snack! Good with cats, dogs, and kids (over 6)?: Prior to coming to Mastiffs to Mutts, Elphie was living in a foster home with sixteen other dogs (yes, 16, you read it right!) as well as cats. Her former foster parent did feel she was a bit overly interested in the cats, so the cats were kept separate from her. Elphie has done wonderfully with the other dogs in her MTM foster home, as well as her other doggie friends in the neighborhood, and she will be eventually re-evaluated with cats as it is felt she could probably co-exist well with the right kinds of cats, ones who can put her in her place. She will also be evaluated with children, but her very sweet and loving demeanor with all people makes her foster family feel kids will definitely not be an issue for her. It is important to note, Elphie can be extremely pushy with play with other animals, and this can become overwhelming to other animals. Her foster family is working on teaching her to have better manners and to allow other animals space during play. She does plays very nicely and respectfully with other dogs most of the time, but she also displays poor manners at times, such as going directly face-to-face and over other dog’s shoulders when meeting them, and being relentless in play, and not allowing them space to take a break from playing or to go potty when she is very excited. The good news is, she responds beautifully to appropriate corrections from other dogs, and will respect their boundaries when she is corrected. She has done very well with her grumpy small dog friend across the street, and is also doing well with her cantankerous senior foster sister. Not good with: N/A so far. Housetrained: She’s working on it! She does have accidents in her crate at times, usually when she is upset or stressed. When she first came to her current foster home, she had accidents in the crate overnight for the first three nights. However, since she has gotten settled in and in a routine, this has not continued to be a problem. During the day, it’s important to keep her on a schedule. She’s starting to ask to go out, but she gets easily excited and distracted once she gets out there, and she needs time before she is willing to go potty. Her foster family has found that making her wait to interact and play with her foster siblings until after she goes potty is important, otherwise she forgets and will have an accident when she comes inside. She also does not enjoy going outside by herself, and will just stand by the door to come in if she is alone, so she has needed someone to accompany her each time at first as she settles into a routine. Every day she is improving though, so her housebreaking is very much on the right track! Crate trained: Yes. She does struggle at times and will howl/wail to let you know how upset she is. But with regular routing and reinforcement, this is a behavior that eventually stops after a few days. Requires a fenced yard (physical fence and/or invisible fence)?: While Elphie does not require a physical fenced yard, she would love to have one in her future home, just because running laps around the yard and structured playtime with other dogs are favorite pastimes of hers. Invisible fences are not recommended for Elphie. She is the type who would be enticed to leave the yard and take the hit, and then not come back to avoid being shocked again. She also gets very excited by other dogs and people, and being able to see another dog or person and not go to say hello would be extremely frustrating for her, so if she was also being shocked, this could lead to potential behavior issues which are otherwise avoidable. Walks well on a leash?: She’s learning to walk on a loose leash. She does pull at times currently, but since she is very food motivated, with some regular training in her foster home, it’s expected she should be loose leash walking consistently very soon! Challenges: Counter surfing is currently one of Elphie’s main challenges. She will take things (food or not) left out on the counter. Her foster family is working on training with her to eliminate this behavior, but it’s something her future family should continue to work with her on from a training perspective, and monitor her closely until the behavior is observed to be fully and consistently eliminated, to ensure her safety. She has no concept of hot surfaces, like stoves, and could hurt herself if the behavior is not eliminated. Any Medical issues?: Prior to coming to Mastiffs to Mutts, Elphie had corrective surgery to address prolapsed glands in both her eyes (also referred to as “cherry eye”). She does still have considerable obstruction to her vision, but she is still healing from the procedure. If, after her healing period, her condition is not fully resolved, it is possible she may require a second surgery to fully correct the issue. Aside from that, she has no known medical issues at this time. What would be the best kind of home?: Elphaba’s ideal forever family will be one who is committed to continuing her training and socialization to fully support her needs and establishment of appropriate boundaries as she matures. Elphie’s ideal family would ideally consist of at least one other dog friend who would be willing to play with her, and who can correct her in an appropriate manner when she goes overboard if necessary. However, if this is not possible, she would also probably love the idea of doggie daycare. Her future family should be able to meet her activity and enrichment needs so that she can channel her energy appropriately, especially if her future family would not have other dogs who can help to keep her engaged in play. It would be ideal for her future adopter to have a basic understanding of the body language of other animals as well, so that until Elphie learns to reduce pushy behaviors and give other animals space when necessary, her family can provide necessary levels of supervision and respond to address signs of stress or anxiety in playmates before it would become problematic. This will help Elphie to ensure she continues to have safe and positive experiences socializing with other pets, and that they are also able to enjoy interacting with her. Fill out an Adoption Application If you were to look up “Fawn Mastiff” in the dictionary there would be a picture of Remi with this definition: 1. Large body giant breed dog; affectionate couch potato that thinks she’s a lap dog. 2. Human shadow – will follow any human that is up and moving regardless of where they are going. 3. Slow motion backyard zoomer – zoomies could last 3 – 10 minutes and require a 3 – 4 hour recharge period Subspecies: Female: She will think it is her duty to police all activities in her domain but is happier if the human takes command so she can sleep. HISTORY: Remi was dearly loved by her family but unfortunately, they had to relocate and were not able to take her with them. Remi has been well taken care of, she is healthy weight, does not have skin issues and has always been an inside dog. PERSONALITY: This girl is a dreamboat. Her balanced personality showed quickly after she had time to decompress and recover from the huge change in her life. She interacts well with the four dogs she is living with now, does well in public, loves humans and is good with cats. Remi turned three years old in November making her the perfect age; young enough to be active and old enough to be calm. She listens when leashed and does not pull, but doesn’t seem to know basic commands. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Remi loves to play. She will pounce on a toy and shake it into submission and she loves to run with the other dogs when in the fenced backyard. A nap will be required after any playtime, preferably while cuddling with her human. MEDICAL ISSUES: None. She is spayed and her fur is starting to grow back. No skin issues and has not shown signs of allergies. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: Remi would do great in any home where she is loved. She is crate and house trained and sleeps most of the day so would be fine with a working family. She is good with other dogs both large and small but would also love getting all the humans’ attention. Remi has lived with children and does well with dogs of all sizes. It’s hard to believe the shape that Zeke was in considering he is such a good boy. Dubbed “Mr. Wonderful” by volunteers, Zeke calmly accepts every touch whether it is to provide affection or administer medical intervention. His past is quite murky. Rumors of being abandoned in.a basement. Story of a Good Samaritan who found him as a stray and asked the shelter to take him. Whatever it was that left Zeke in the state he is in — bony, bald and bleeding — he is on the road to recovery now. With a head reminiscent of a Neapolitan Mastiff and the body of a Weimaraner, we lean on the iPhone to come up with some breed. With more weight on his disproportionate frame, he will look a little more identifiable, but it will still be a guess. Unflappable, good-natured and easy to walk, Zeke’s blood work results came back good. He would be a great companion for someone who would like to help nurse him back to good health and take him on long, easy walks.
