Story
Benson is a big boy – he is a 1 yr old great Pyrenees/lab mix that weighs 92#. He presented to Second Chance as an unclaimed stray, and is an easy dog to have around. His foster says that Benson is “pure love” – he loves everybody, especially children. Enjoys the company and interactions with other dogs, and is a hit at the dog park. Benson is amazingly perceptive to the welfare of people – one day at the park he was jogging alongside a young girl to make sure she was safe from the other dogs, and when the girl’s mother was knocked over by another dog, Benson ran over to check to be sure she was OK. He seems to be protective, concerned, and a caretaker – I don’t know how dogs are evaluated for therapy dog training, but Benson might be a candidate. But he is quite sensitive to raised voices or a correction of any kind, and acts like his feelings have been hurt and he is devastated. He wants so much to please. Any children in his home should be mature enough to not raise their voice at him, or spank him if he doesn’t do what they want - perhaps 8-10 yr and up. No cat experience. Very quiet – foster hasn’t heard him bark yet. Benson is housebroken – he doesn’t ask to go out, and is able to be left for an 8 hr. workday. At night, he sleeps on his big dog bed which is right next to your bed. Rides well in the car – always ready to jump in and go with you – EXCEPT if you want to take him home from the dog park because he doesn’t want to leave. He usually walks well on a leash, but if you hook him to a leash to take him out of the dog park, his stubborn streak kicks in and he lays down. So the foster waits a couple minutes, then says “let’s go now” – Benson will get up and come along. Thankfully he is well behaved when left home, and not destructive, because you really can’t get him into a kennel. He should have a bone to chew on and a couple chew toys to entertain himself with; he hasn’t gotten into any mischief. Benson loves attention, pets, body rubs, and being told he is a good boy. He has selective hearing – if he is doing something enjoyable he might ignore being called. Benson would benefit from obedience classes, as he doesn’t know basic commands. There is something special about him, and you melt when he looks at you with his soft, brown eyes.
Benson is neutered, and current on distemper, bordetella and rabies vaccinations. His heartworm test and tick profile are negative. The microchip is registered to Second Chance. His adoption fee is $375 . Call 651-771-5662 if you are interested in Benson.
