Story
Canelo’s story is a testament to his resilience. Canelo was rescued from the streets of Mexico. We don’t know his full story but we do know Canelo is a special needs dog with vision impairment, and he’s looking for a home where he can truly thrive. He will need a family who understands his special needs and is committed to giving him the love and support he deserves. Though he has limited vision—likely only able to see shadows or shapes—it doesn’t slow him down as he learns to use his other senses like hearing and smell to navigate his world, and he’s remarkably adaptable. He’s a loving and gentle soul who likes pets and scratches, calm environments, and the sound of his people nearby. The ideal adopter would have experience with visually impaired dogs OR be willing to learn and support Canelo as he navigates his visual impairment. It would be wonderful for Canelo to live a full life, where he learns to enjoy playing with toys, running around, interacting with other dogs, and building his confidence. About Canelo: • Vision Challenges: Canelo’s vision impairment means he experiences the world differently. When introduced to a new environment, he tends to walk in circles to map out his space and learn where obstacles might be. As he gets comfortable, this circling behavior decreases, and he starts to move around with more confidence. • Adjusting to New People: It’s important to note that when Canelo is adjusting to a new environment, it takes him time to recognize voices. During this adjustment period, he may come across as very aloof or uninterested in people. This isn’t because he doesn’t want to connect—it’s simply his way of processing and adapting. Over time, as he learns to recognize voices and build trust, he begins to seek out companionship. For example, after a few weeks in his foster home, he now actively seeks out his foster mom by scent and voice recognition to receive pets and scratches. • Gentle and Independent: Canelo isn't overly affectionate, but he appreciates quiet moments of connection, such as butt scratches and neck rubs. Canelo appreciates it most when you sit on the floor with him so he can easily find you and get pets and scratches. Canelo is not a lap dog and doesn’t care for being up on the couch or bed with humans. Things like this are out of his comfort zone as he does use his paws for touch, feeling where is at. He does not care for being carried or held as this throws off his ability to determine where he is at. With the right guidance and patience from his adopter, this could evolve over time. • Benefits from Other Dogs: Canelo hasn’t interacted much with the other dogs in the home, but he is beginning to recognize them by scent, often sniffing them deeply, and he uses them as guides to navigate his environment. While not required, having a calm, respectful canine companion would help him adjust and build confidence, provided the dog isn’t overly excitable or intrusive. This would make Canelo feel more secure and comfortable. Canelo would do best in a home without children. The reason for this is that he can startle easy. And since he lived on the streets of Mexico, he had to be on alert of dog attacks while he sleeps so he may startle easily. He is good with kids when he is not sleeping but for safety purposes, we are looking for a home without. Apply to adopt at www.campcompanion.org Adoption fee is $300 plus tax.
