You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Little man was a breeder boy. His mouth was horrible. We removed the last of his teeth since they were rotted. He is now toothless. He is a whole 5 pounds. Good with other dogs. He will be in a bellyband until he learned to go outside all the time. He does have a grade 3/4 heart murmur. He was seen by the cardiologist and was told no surgery needed just put him on Fish oil to help with the heart valves. You must live within an hour of the rescue to adopt. Story
Update: Little Indiana Jones really had us fooled. We thought he was too young, friendly and normal to have ended up with our rescue. But as we have gotten to know him better, his inner demon dog has emerged. 👹. This 8lb maltese definitely has a dark side that can rival even our master of evil, Ray (literally, they have had a couple fence fight show downs and he does NOT back down 🤦‍♀️). Overall he’s a happy guy, tail always wagging and demanding attention. We suspect he was kept caged or crated a lot or teased behind a fence, as most of his ferocity seems connected to being behind a barrier or put in a crate. He was a scrawny hungry guy when we got him and has gained weight, but still thinks he has to protect his food so will need to continue to learn that being approached when eating means chicken or cheese will rain from the sky, not that you are going to fight him for his kibble. Trying to tell him what to do or stop him from doing what he wants will be met with a flash of (now pearly white after his dental cleaning) fangs 🦷 and some possessed-sounding noises 😖. Luckily Indiana is very praise and food motivated, so it’s just a matter of tricking him into thinking he wants to do the things you want him to do and rewarding him for doing them, rather than trying to best him a duel of any sort. Typical dude, you have to make him think he’s outsmarted you and got his own way but that it was his idea all along. 😜 He likes meeting other dogs of all sizes, though might be best living as an only dog, unless you have a chill tolerant dog who won’t mind this tiny Napoleon’s laws and creeds. Kids are a definite no for him, he would have no tolerance for their behavior and having to fend off bratty children could definitely be part of why he is the way he is. Indiana Jones is about 4-6 years old we believe, almost a solid 9lbs now that he’s a healthier weight, and should have many years to possess your home and soul. If you like little dogs with big personalities, email njwoof@cs.com to meet him in Northern NJ This intrepid little guy was exploring the woods all by himself and no one ever came looking for him 🤷‍♀️. He’s a friendly little Maltese, skinny at just under 8 lbs and we think somewhere between 3-6 years old. He barks at first but quickly warms up and likes attention and walks. He likes other dogs too, a bit too much actually- since he wasn’t neutered he can’t keep his mind out of the gutter around them if you know what we mean 😉 He should be much more pleasant around them once his hormones settle from tomorrow’s neuter 👋 👋 ⚾️ 🏀. He does go to the bathroom outside when walked but may have some accidents/mark and need a belly band initially. He seems like a nice easy going little guy for the most part and will be a sweet little companion. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet him in northern NJ by appointment Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we can schedule socially distant appointments with a specific dog outdoors at our vet’s office: VCA Morris Plains Animal Hospital 3009 Rt 10 East Morris Plains (Denville on GPS) NJ 07950 Now is the perfect time to open your home to a needy dog! Story
Little young senior Lulu got some disappointing medical news… the lump she had removed was cancerous 😞 This 8 year old Maltese/chihuahua had never been spayed before, resulting in a small mammary tumor. The good news is she’s spayed now, her chest x-rays showed no sign of any spread, and it was a low grade tumor hopefully caught early enough. But she will need to be monitored for recurrence or spread. She’s otherwise healthy and has been a very sweet little girl once she bonds, but can be distrustful of strangers and protect her person. All 8 pound personal bodyguard of her 🫡 She’s fine with other dogs and looking for an adult home where she will be loved unconditionally for the rest of her life. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Meet Lulu! We were told this tiny 8 year old scruffy girl was “not friendly” and she was handed to us muzzled, but as soon as we walked her away from her owner she warmed right up to us and has been a sweetheart ever since! She may show more protective tendencies as she settles in a new home of course, so is looking for a lower key adult home that’s ok with a little feisty side. Once she loves you she loves you unconditionally, asks to be picked up and dances for attention all the time. She’s only 8lbs and said to be a Maltese/chihuahua mix, good with other small dogs and a cuddly loyal little lapdog once she bonds and feels safe. Please email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. Story
Meet Pablo This scruffy 5 year old Jack Russell/Maltese was surrendered when his family was overwhelmed with too many dogs and he wasn’t adjusting well to the arrival of a new human baby. Pablo was purchased as a puppy with his sister from a breeder. Unfortunately they were never altered and had 2 litters of “accidental” pups together, all of which were born with congenital issues due to inbreeding 🤦‍♀️. Rather than have them altered they just kept the females separated from the males, so Pablo and his son were relegated to mostly living in crates lately. Originally, he was a “service dog” for his owner who had fainting spells, went everywhere with him, and was very attached and in tune to his person. He’s a loyal one-man or woman dog who protects his person and isn’t a fan of kids grabbing at him and pulling his long flowing hair or annoying him in other ways. But very sweet and cuddly, desperate for a person to bond to. He’s good with other small dogs also and a really cute 11lbs fluffy boy who deserves better than life in a crate and being pushed aside. He’s been neutered now, updated on shots, and is ready for someone who will return his unconditional love for the rest of his life. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet him in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Introducing Luigi. Feel free to rename him, he’s deaf 🧏 He won’t answer to anything anyway. His entire existance is a story of human irresponsibility and a cautionary tale of why our aggressive spay/neuter mission is so important. His parents were brother and sister Jack Russell/maltese mixes purchased from a breeder. Their family was not planning to breed them, but did not have them spayed/neutered so of course accidents happened. Twice actually, there were 2 litters of puppies totally 7. Because inbreeding is never a good idea no matter the species 🤢, several of the puppies died soon after birth, and another died young from seizures. Luigi was one of the lucky ones who survived in fairly good health, other than hereditary deafness since birth, and some on and off skin allergies and ear infection. The family kept him and his also deaf sister until now, when they are almost 4 years old. They still never had any of them spayed or neutered, and were instead keeping the males and females separated which was stressful for the people and the dogs. The females were calmer and the family favorites for sure, while the males spent most of their time crated and ignored. After the arrival of a new baby in the household that the father dog didn’t adjust well to, the family was overwhelmed with caring for so many dogs and finally decided to rehome the 2 males. They contacted the local animal control and we stepped in to take them to avoid them having to be in the scary shelter. They were not abused and clearly loved, but not given proper medical care, grooming, socialization or enough attention to meet their needs. We will introduce you to dad separately very soon… Luigi is a sweet boy, a little nervous at first but loves attention, was reported to love the kids and other dogs in the home. He was never walked on a leash, housebroken, or socialized outside of the home so will need some patience and training. He loves being with people and craves attention, and sleeping alone in a crate was very upsetting for him. His nails were severely overgrown, and ears and skin severely infected and uncomfortable from untreated allergies. He went right to our vet for a long overdue neuter, and will be on some medicated baths and a special diet to treat his skin. It’s hard to tell he’s deaf as he watches people so closely and follows the other dogs. We have offered, as we always do in these types of situations, to spay the mom and sister remaining in the home for free to help prevent any further accidents in the future and so they can be healthier and the family is receptive to help after education on the many benefits of their beloved girls being spayed. We always seize the chance to break the cycle and prevent future litters of homeless dogs. Thanks to your generosity today and all year long, we were able to immediately step up to provide a safe place and medical care for Luigi as well as provide assistance to the rest of his relatives. Many people believe there are only certain breeds and large dogs in need of homes in our area, but we take in little dogs like these every week from our local shelter and homes where they aren’t able to be cared for properly, and always have extremely high medical bills to prepare them for new and better lives. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Luigi in Northern NJ once he’s ready, and thank you for making our #GivingTuesday campaign a success!
