I take great delight in introducing Tammy a 2 1/2 year old, 6.6 pound Maltese. Tammy came into our care from a puppy mill where she was bred for profit. Her hair had been closely shaved before we received her. What hair she does have is silky soft and white except for her ears which are a very pale beige. Because it’s been so cold I have put Tammy into a sweater until her hair grows longer. Tammy has made amazing progress adapting to life in a home and this makes it quite clear that she is ready to find her furever home. When Tammy first entered my home she tentatively explored her surroundings. She was, as expected very skittish at sudden movements or unfamiliar noises. She still leaves the room when the vacuum or robot vacuum in used. Tammy quickly got used to my talking to my Google home system and timers and alarms. She is a highly curious young lady and very alert. Amazingly Tammy ate some kibble in the kitchen within her first hour with me. Later she cuddled in my lap wrapped in a soft blanket and semi slept for almost 2 hours. At first she shivered for about a minute and then settled in quietly. Tammy was reluctant to drink water and at her spay a few days after coming to me that we discovered she had a very serious uterine infection called a pyometra. This has been cured with her spay and a series of antibiotics. Now we got down to toilet training in earnest. I took Tammy outdoors on my deck every 3 hours. Since her surgery she has only had 2 poop accidents in the house and one was my fault in not reading her signs. She has learned to alert me when she needs to go out. Tammy holds overnight easily for 8 hours and has done so from the beginning. Because of the severe cold weather and heavy snow Tammy’s outdoor excursions were kept to my covered deck for the first week or so. At first the sliding patio door frightened her and she needed to be carried across the threshold. Within a few days Tammy was entering and exiting without assistance. The same behaviour occurred when we went out the front door to walk off property but by the 4th try she independently went through the doors. Tammy easily managed the 2 steps down to ground level. Tammy eagerly looks forward to her walks outdoors and we now go for 20 minutes or so 2 or 3 times a day as well as a couple of short bathroom breaks. Tammy walks very well on lead but will occasionally cross in front of me. She just needs more practice. The world outside the mill where she was kept is all very new and sometimes frightening. I have invited several neighbours over one at a time and although Tammy hung back initially when they came inside, when I wrapped her in a blanket and put them in their lap she settled and when put down stayed in the room. She has steadily gained confidence and lately when someone enters the house she will bark as if to say this is my place and you’re intruding. She then settles and accepts their presence but usually goes to her bed to observe them. Tammy started taking an interest in toys after a few days. Initially she would hoard them on a blanket or one of her beds. She would come to investigate when I squeaked one of her toys. One day Tammy dropped her favourite soft toy at my feet and when I tossed it a few feet away she trotted over and brought it back and dropped it at my feet. We continued this for several times. She had taught me how to play fetch which we now do once or twice a day. She now plays with and chews on her toys independently. Tammy also instigated her favourite game of chase with me. When she wants me to play she has an adorable little squeaky noise she makes to let me know its playtime. She loves being chased around the living room coffee table and when she’s had enough she jumps on her nearby bed inviting me to lie down with her and give her body rubs and cuddles. Tammy is an extremely affectionate girl. When I lie on the floor to do my yoga practice I’m fair game for her to sniff, lick and rub herself against me. If I sit up on the floor Tammy will rub up against my back-my own personal back massager. She now jumps on her hind legs and almost does a dance to let me know she wants me to pick her up and wrap her up in a blanket and cuddle. Some evenings Tammy chooses to curl up on her bed nearby me rather than be cuddled. She’s becoming more independent. Be aware those huge eyes and sweet nature could make you Tammy’s play/cuddle slave. Tammy discovered the fun and sensation of rubbing herself against my winter patio furniture coverings. She now loves to rub against furniture or me. Body rubs are a must for this girl. Lately she seems to enjoy butt rubs and when I’m lying down with her she’ll often stick her butt in my face and expect a thorough rubbing. Tammy still doesn’t drink readily from a bowl although I did catch her yesterday taking a quick sip. I give her kibble mixed with water twice a day and have resorted to crushed ice cubes in between meals. I tried putting ice cubes into her water dish and she proceeded to take them out one at a time and deposit them on a nearby rug. This will continue to be a learning practice for her. A few days ago I took Tammy over to my neighbour who has a cat to see how she’d react. Tucker is a large very furry cat who outweighs her by about 10 pounds. This little sweetheart showed no fear and went nose to nose and followed Tucker around the house for almost an hour. I have introduced her to a few smaller dogs with no issues. Tammy is friendly and curious when meeting new animals. Because Tammy is so small she would not be suitable in a home with small children. Teens would be fine as long as they are quieter and understand that she is nervous of loud noises and quick movements. She rarely makes noise and would be fine in an apartment, condo or house as long as she has access to the outdoors several times a day. Tammy is crate trained and I have been able to extend her time to 2 ½ hours. She hasn’t displayed separation issues but is always eager to get out of her crate and be with me. Because of her affectionate nature Tammy would not do well if left alone for long periods of time. She loves being around her human and craves their affection and attention. Tammy has been fascinated with her reflection in the sliding patio door and will just stare for a minute or so every time we go out on the deck. Whenever I put on my jacket, Tammy immediately goes to where I keep her jacket and leash and waits patiently for me to get her ready. Tammy constantly surprises me with the great strides she’s made. Tammy makes me laugh daily with her antics. She is so ready for her next adventure-her furever home. Tammy has gained so much confidence in her short time with me. With continued patience, care and guidance Tammy will make an amazing family member. If you’re looking for a bright, affectionate little dog who loves going for walks and the outdoors and who adores cuddling in front of the tv at night, please consider Tammy. Story
Meet Teddy – Your Loving, Lively Companion! Teddy is an adorable 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier/Maltese mix weighing 12 pounds. Born on February 11, 2013, Teddy has spent his life bringing joy to those around him. Now, he’s ready to find his perfect forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and part of the family! A Little About Teddy Teddy is a neutered gentleman who is up to date with his vetting and has been lovingly cared for. While he can be hesitant when meeting new people, once Teddy warms up, he’s an affectionate, social, and lively companion who thrives on love and attention. What Makes Teddy Special Loves His People: Teddy thrives on being around his loved ones and enjoys being included in family activities. He loves being held, soaking up belly rubs, and spending quality time with his humans. Dinner time Leader: Teddy is skilled at gathering everyone together, especially in the kitchen and family movies. There is no need to have a dinner bell. Teddy is the best way to know dinner is ready as he is the first to let you know it’s dinner time and gets you to follow him to the kitchen. Has been around Kids: Teddy has lived with children since they were toddlers, making him a great fit for families with little ones. Other Dogs and animals: In his previous home, he got along well with other dogs and has made friends with pups of all sizes, including a Border Collie and a poodle mix Vocal: Teddy can be vocal especially when he wants attention or feels something needs addressing. Due to this, he may not be the best match for apartments or condos dwellers where noise might be an issue. A home with more space and understanding neighbors would be ideal. Sensitive to His Environment: Teddy has cataracts and limited vision, so a minimal, well-organized space is ideal for him. Special care is needed to ensure his environment is safe and free from hazards, allowing him to move around comfortably without risk of injury. Dislikes Being Alone: Teddy does not enjoy being left alone and prefers a home where he can be surrounded by his family most of the time. Daily Life with Teddy Energy and Involvement: Teddy enjoys going in the backyard, being active and part of the family. Whether it’s a walk, cuddle time, or just following you around, he’s happiest when he’s included in daily life. On walks, he may bark or growl at dogs on the same side of the street but is otherwise unbothered by people or vehicles. Diet: Teddy thrives on a diet of cooked rice and chicken, along with Blue Buffalo Wilderness Small Breed kibble. He also enjoys rice, carrots, and peas, which help keep his tummy happy.  Grooming and Handling: Teddy is cooperative with grooming, baths, and vet visits. While he dislikes any pats on his backside and hips, he loves being pampered with belly rubs and cuddles. He also handles daily eye drops and other care with ease. Medical Notes Teddy had successful CCL surgery on his back left leg in January 2023 and takes gabapentin daily for leg soreness and anxiety. Chronic pain management and monitoring his pain points is essential for Teddy. His cataracts affect his vision, so he relies on his family to provide a secure and predictable environment. Ideal Home for Teddy Teddy would thrive in an active but calm and loving home where his family can include him in their daily activities and provide the special care he needs. Teddy’s ideal home would also include someone who can spend lots of time with him, ensuring he feels secure and loved. Ready to Meet Teddy? If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal, and energetic companion who needs a little extra care and attention, Teddy is waiting to meet you! With patience and love, he’ll reward you with endless snuggles, wagging tails, and unconditional devotion. Contact us today to make Teddy a part of your family! January 23, 2025, 9:15 am

Story
7 yrs young spayed Maltese female who joined our rescue Sept 28 as a retired breeding dog from a commercial breeding operation This darling girl has now completed all of her vetting including vaccinations, microchip, bloodwork, spay and full dental extractions due to badly decayed teeth. She is blossoming in her foster home and ready to find her forever family. PLEASE READ HER ADOPTION PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING to be sure that your family is the right match for Chicadee's needs in her ideal forever home. Chicadee's wish list includes Another suitable canine companion in her new home A home without a lot of stairs or family member committed to carrying her up/down when needed and continuing to work on her training/comfort level NOTES from Chicadee's foster family Energy level: Moderate - Chicadee is quiet most of the day, but loves to play with us, her toys and our dogs. Chicadee loves her walks and enjoys frequent shorter walks as well as snuffling in the fenced yard with her foster present and other dogs with her Training happens throughout the day as opportunities arise. She is highly motivated by food so treats are an effective training tool and teaching her new behaviours is a joy. Chicadee is food motivated - she eats her food eagerly and loves treats, which as mentioned above, really assist with training. Good with dogs both in their home environment as well as meeting new dogs? She is extremely good with her foster sisters and loves to cuddle with them, play with them and follow them around. She has been good with other dogs that have come into our home, both adult and puppy. When encountering dogs outside the home, Chicadee is curious but cautious. She will allow them to approach but she is timid. As long as they approach with respect she is fine. How does your foster dog respond to meeting new people - Chicadee is initially cautious when other people come into our home, and will maintain a distance until she is comfortable with them. Once she is comfortable, she will interact with them. Outside the home, she is more cautious and will not approach someone new. She does not retreat -if they approach softly and respectfully, she will interact with them, sniff their feet or hands, etc. Good with cats? Yes, brief time with a cat with no concerns, not fostered with cats Any guarding behaviours -None, she is very good about sharing. Chicadee shares toys, dog beds and family members with our own dogs and we have had no concerns in this area. She is very eager when treats are being given, but shows no aggression whatsoever. Housetrained? Yes Crate trained? Yes Chicadee is generally very quiet in her crate. She snuggles into the blankets and sleeps, and she is very excited when we come home. She often will go into the crate for a nap on her own during the day. I leave my foster dog alone for ___h per day. 2 Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? No When we first got Chicadee, she would freeze when we tried to walk her. Now she is very comfortable on a leash and loves to go for walks. She will just stand for a few seconds initially but then is eager to go. When walking solo, Chicadee tends to walk slowly, stopping to sniff, to look at things or to listen to new sounds as she is very curious about the world around her. So she tends to be a very casual walker when going solo. This is not the case when walking with one of her foster sisters, as she is keen to walk with them and scampers along at their speed. Handling?-Chicadee is very receptive to being touched - ears, tail, paws, etc. She loves being petted or scratched and has not shown any negative reaction to being touched. Very compliant at vet appointments. Chicadee is a very funny little soul who loves to play, either alone with her toys or with her foster sisters. She loves her people and will happily follow us around and watch what we are doing. She is a happy creature who loves a good cuddle. Chicadee enjoys being held or sitting beside us or on our laps. When she is playing, her behaviour can be quite entertaining. Sweet, little Chicadee is a work in progress. She has yet to develop the confidence to tackle the stairs (both ascending and descending.) While she will go in and out of our patio door, she will not go through our front door, perhaps because it is solid (not glass) and maybe because there is also a screen door. We have to carry her out the front, but it's not much of a chore as she is so small. Chicadee has come an extremely long way in a short period of time, and will benefit from consistent reinforcement by her new family of the skills listed below. Due to having had her teeth removed, Chicadee requires soft food and treats. We also have learned that she does not react well to beef. Beyond that, we have no concerns about her health. Please describe current routines and preferences that will help the dog settle into their new home: Chicadee has a very simple schedule. She wakes about 7 in the morning, checks out the backyard, has breakfast and a walk . Once she is home, she has a well deserved nap. Napping, learning new skills and playing are the activities for the day. In the evening she is happy to cuddle up on the couch for some tv watching. About nine she is ready for her last walk of the day and then off to bed in her crate. Chicadee will need some time to settle into a new home. Attention will need to be paid to her signals - when she needs to go potty, she does a funny little spinning dance to let you know. We have bells at the door but so far she is still signalling with the spin dance. Having small stuffed toys available and a nice soft bed she can curl up in will help as well. We have her crate available as well and she likes to go in it on her own when she needs some quiet time. She may initially need some alone time to get used to her new family and her new home. Once she is comfortable, lots of attention and respectful cuddling will really help her get settled as she is very affectionate and loves to be held. Strengths/areas they have improved on: Chicadee came with very few skills and no understanding of what it means to live in a household with humans and other dogs. She didn't play, had no idea what toys are, was uncomfortable in a harness or on a leash - she would freeze as soon as we tried to walk. Now she does all these things and is quite compliant when it comes to the harness, leash, coat, etc. because she enjoys walks so much. Initially she was reluctant to interact with us or with her foster sisters but now she craves attention. It has been a joy to watch her go from being just a dog to becoming a member of a family. Transportation-Chicadee is getting used to travelling in a vehicle. She may shake a little at first but then she is fine on short trips: occasionally she has a little motion sickness on longer trips (ie. more than an hour.) CBD oil or homeopet Travel Anxiety, or Cerennia will assist with this as needed We think the perfect adoptive home for Chicadee would be one where she receives lots of companionship from humans or other dogs. She loves to cuddle with her furry foster siblings, with us and with our daughter and granddaughters. She seeks attention and loves to follow us around. Chicadee also enjoys cuddling on the couch. We think she would do well with a family or with a single person or couple, as long as they have time to spend with her. She would not do well being left alone for long periods of time. We think a home with a fenced yard would be ideal, as Chicadee enjoys being outside and loves to explore her surroundings. As mentioned previously, Chicadee does not do stairs (she will do a couple of steps into the house) and we have not let her jump onto or off of the couch or chair due to her small size/risk of injuries We believe that Chicadee would be a wonderful addition to almost any family. She is not suitable for young children or busy noisy environments that would startle her, but she loves our granddaughters who are all over the age of ten and extremely dog savvy and respectful. Chicadee Notes: * Mandatory registration with an approved trainer is a requirement for adoptive families. *Must be located within Ontario Canada *Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario. We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XC1rUWWnxI , or on Amazon prime or also a variety of other free video sites.
