Story
MUST READ Before Applying: - Adopter with experience socializing skittish dogs is strongly preferred - He’s not ready for touching or petting just yet, but he’s showing signs of wanting to trust. - Auggie requires another dog in the home for mentorship and companionship - Fenced yard is required for safety - Calmer, quieter home with no children (helps prevent door darting) - He is not leash-trained and will need to continue potty pad training (likely requires a belly band) until he is comfortable going outside. Meet Sweet Auggie! He’s a 6-year-old, 9 lb Maltese with a gentle soul, looking for a patient and understanding forever home. Auggie was rescued last Fall from a breeding situation where he had no human interaction. Since being in foster care, he’s been learning how to be a dog by following the lead of other pups in the home. He absolutely requires another dog in the home—ideally a playful one—as he lights up when he’s playing and running with other dogs. He’s not ready for touch or petting just yet, but he’s showing signs of wanting to trust. He’ll lay across the room in a cozy dog bed watching you and the other pups, clearly wanting to be included. He seems to really want to be part of the family, but isn’t quite sure how yet. Auggie is still working on potty training. He uses potty pads inconsistently and does not go outside yet. A belly band is recommended while he learns. He does not walk on a leash and may growl when picked up or touched—not out of aggression, but fear. He’s never bitten. We believe that in a calm , patient home with a confident dog sibling, Auggie will keep blossoming . He may never be a cuddly lap dog—but he’s trying so hard to understand love. Dogs that are like him often work the hardest to become part of the pack. With time, he could surprise you. If you are interested, complete the Adoption Application on our website at www.NeedyPaws.org and we will contact you. Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Auggie’s adoption fee is $275.00, which includes up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative, spay/neuter and microchip. We are a 100% foster-based rescue and all of our dogs live in approved foster homes. We are dedicated to finding the best Forever Homes, and will perform home visits and conduct veterinarian and reference checks for each potential adopter.
