Story
Hi! My name is Calypso and I am waiting for my “forever” home. My owners had to surrender me because they were moving and couldn’t take me with them. I had lived with them since I was just a kitten, so don’t understand why they left me behind, from the only home I had ever known. I am very afraid of new things/places/people, so may growl, hiss and scratch until I get to know and trust you. My foster mom tried very hard to get to know me for almost a month before I finally trusted her enough to come out from my covered bed (my “safe space”) and let her pet me and love me. Multiple times throughout the day, she sat with me and patiently talked to me while I either ignored her or growled and hissed at her from inside the covered bed and scratched her hand when she tried to pet me anyway, but she persisted, and it paid off. Now, I love to come out and be petted/rubbed! She tells me how much she loves me and I purr my love back. When I have had enough, I head back inside my bed for some “me time.” You “cat-savvy” people know what I mean! So far, I haven’t let my foster mom pick me up and I haven’t climbed up in her lap, but I like to lay next to her to be petted. I don’t think I’m actually shy, but I am reserved, and take time to warm up to new situations. When she needs to move me so she can clean my room, she carries me to the other room in the covered bed and I am fine with that – I don’t even try to jump out. I have a Comfort Zone diffuser where I hang out and “stress and anxiety” drops in my water since I have had a tough time adjusting to this new life, but I hope I won’t need it once I am settled in my “forever” home. I’m a big girl, and to be perfectly honest, I admit I am a bit on the chunky side, even though I don’t think I eat too much. I only like dry food served in a shallow bowl or on a plate – I’ve been eating Purina One Tender Selects Blend (Salmon) since coming to Fancy Cats and Dogs Rescue and I like that because it has real salmon! My foster mom has tried several kinds of canned food to see if I would eat it, but I am not at all interested. I don’t even like Temptations treats much, but do enjoy catnip! I drink my water well and use the litter box like a good girl. I also like to use my scratching post, but I don’t play with toys, but maybe I just need more time. My foster mom has 3 young cats and, while they are very interested in getting to know me, I am not too interested in getting to know them, so growl at them to keep them from getting too close to me, which they respect. I have always been the only cat and prefer to keep it that way. Although I still spend a lot of time snoozing in my covered bed (which I love because it makes me feel safe), I come out when my foster mom calls my name - I wiggle out of the bed and come over for pets. Now that I trust her, I especially love to have my head and chin petted/scratched, purring all the while, and getting whole body rub-downs, except don’t much like having my feet touched. Maybe not immediately, but once I get to know you, you can even rub my belly! Because of the other cats at my foster house, I choose to stay in the bathroom instead of exploring the rest of the house. However, once I get settled into my new home - where I am the queen of my domain - I know that I will enjoy exploring, but please be patient with me. It has been a tough few months for me and it will likely take a bit of time for me to come around, but it will be worth it because I have lots of love to give and will be a perfect addition to your family. Fosters are like bridges between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save cats and dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters.
