Story
Meet Brownie! This adorable little guy was surrendered to the rescue with his sibling by owners who continue to co-house unaltered dogs and, as a result, produce liters of unwanted puppies that receive no vetting or exposure outside the home. Earlier this year, we rescued another dog, Piper, and her puppies from this family and spayed the remaining female dogs. We thought the problem was solved, and there were no more unaltered dogs in the home…but here we are again. We try to educate folks along the way and can only hope they learn from this. Brownie is currently living with a foster mom and dad and three dogs. He was nervous when he arrived, but warmed up pretty quickly. He gets along wonderfully with the two other dogs in his foster home and finds confidence in being part of a pack. We've also seen him around older kids -13 and 15 years old - and he adored them. He’s better suited for older kids vs. toddlers, as he can still be startled by sudden or loud noises. He’s shy about meeting new people and just needs calm reassurance to settle in and trust visitors. Brownie is a young, adolescent dog who is still learning the rules of home life. He’s comfortable being crated and is good about following the other dogs to go potty outside, but you can’t fully trust him yet. He’s only 6- 7 months old and is still perfecting his house manners. His foster mom, Jen, shared that “Brownie is a sweet, funny, goofy, and playful little guy. We are all in love with him!! That being said, the first couple of days, I thought I was in over my head because he was just so scared, but he has come such a long way quickly. Whoever he ends up with will need to go into it with some patience to get through his initial fear stage, but once he settles in, he is super, super snuggly. If he had it his way, he would be someone’s lapdog.” ****** Brownie is still a puppy with his whole life ahead of him. We feel he’s best suited for an active home and would benefit from another confident, social pup.  Apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Dachshund Mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  9.5 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 7 months old COAT TYPE:  short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Alexandria, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Cash! This sweet Dachshund mix was found running as a stray by our favorite Fed Ex driver and animal advocate, Paula, in Kings Mountain, NC. She took him in, contacted the local shelter, and posted on social media, but no one was looking for this sweet boy. He was still very young, not neutered or microchipped, and quickly proved to be a social little guy. Paula reached out to our team for assistance, and we are happy to help Good Samaritans who are taking action to help a dog in need. We were able to find Cash a wonderful foster home, and he’s currently living with his foster mom, Renee, and her well-adjusted pup, Ryder, and gets regular visits from the grandkids. He’s proven to be a very social, active, and cuddly boy who does great as part of a pack and when meeting new people. We checked in with Renee for a quick update: FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 12/5/24 “Cash is an active and loving dog. He’s happy all the time and always ready to play. He is such a wiggle butt, his whole back end wiggles when he gets excited. As a young pup, he needs to get his energy out or he will find his way into mischief. He does love to chew, so I make sure he has plenty of bones and bully sticks to keep him busy. He’s full of energy and ready to go first thing in the morning after having breakfast. I put Cash and Ryder out in the yard, and they run and run and burn off that energy. They are both ready to crash when they come in. Cash has been wonderful with all of my visitors and hasn’t met a stranger yet. He will grumble a little when they first arrive, but once they let him smell and sniff, he is happy to have company. He loves my grandkids and actually slept with one of the boys when they visited. He likes other dogs too. He met my neighbor’s dog, and they often run and play together. I think Cash will do better with another dog in his home as he seems to follow Ryder and the neighbor's dog. He would also benefit from having a playmate in his home. When Cash first arrived, everything was new to him. He had to get used to the noise and activity inside the home. It took a few days to get him into the kitchen to eat, but now it’s his favorite place. He sits in the kitchen while I prepare his dinner and is always right by my side when I fix any meal. He will be your shadow. He picks things up quickly and has learned No, Come, and Down already. If he’s outside and not paying attention I just tell him I’m going in, and he comes running. Cash is fully housebroken and will go to the door when he needs to go out or first wakes up from a nap. He was not a fan of the crate at first but has learned that when I put my shoes on, he gets a treat. I toss his treat into the crate, and he goes in. He’s fine until I get home. I tried to leave him out one day, and he chewed up some flip-flops, so I think he’s still a little too young to be trusted out on his own. He sleeps in his bed beside my bed every night and sleeps soundly through the night. He would rather sleep with me, but I have a high bed and due to his long back and short legs, I don’t want him jumping up or down. He is always next to me when I’m sitting on the couch and is my shadow around the house. As far as getting out and about. He does well in the car and his leash skills are coming along. Some days he’s right on track, other days he has a mind of his own. I have to be very consistent when working with him. If he gets his way one day, he starts his next day with being stubborn. He needs someone that will hold him to the rules.” ****** Cash needs an active home, and while he’d love to have a pup buddy, he’s confident enough to be an only dog, too. He’s excellent with kids and will make a great family dog. Cash will be coming to town on 12/7 to start his new life.
