Story
Oscar
Everyone who looks at Oscar remarks on his handsome face and soulful eyes. This 17-lb, 4-5 year old neutered male “Chiweenie” mix was picked up as a stray and spent a month in the shelter before coming to GLAR. In the shelter he was very frightened and during his first days in his foster home he was not sure who he could trust. After he overcame his wariness, his personality started to shine through. His foster discovered that while Oscar may not be happy about new people reaching out to pat his head, he loves to be petted on his chest and neck, and will very firmly guide with his paw to petted “just there!” He is an enthusiastic eater, and is very food motivated, which makes it easier for him to learn new routines.
Oscar gets along with other dogs, although he does want to get priority attention, so he may be happiest in a home without another dog. He’s untested around cats or children. He seems to be most anxious around men he doesn’t know, but with a bit of patience he learns that a man can be very nice. Oscar sleeps soundly and deeply in his crate, enjoys walks on a leash, sprinting around the backyard, meal time, and lots of naps. He will potty outside, but prefers to use a pad inside the house on rainy days. As a recently neutered adult male, he still retains some of his marking instinct, so his foster keeps a belly band on him inside for now.
We are seeking a small, quiet household for Oscar. In the shelter it was noted that his head movements were odd. After confirming his overall health, he was taken to UC Davis for a neurological consult. The veterinarians think it likely that Oscar has a congenital issue that cannot be treated with medication, yet it’s possible for him to live as a normal dog. He also has some impaired hearing at the lower ranges. His quirky habits are mainly noticeable when he is anxious or very excited, and he's overall a happy little dog with lots of love to give his people.
