Story
Max is looking for a committed owner this time around. He was originally adopted from the Mesquite Animal Shelter when he was a young puppy to people that lived in an apartment. Max is a 11 month old 60 pound retriever lab mix that was surrendered to our shelter on 1/28 because he got too big for an apartment. I definitely agree he is too big for an apartment!!!. He would be happy to have a yard so he can go out and play and blow off some steam, but then come in to enjoy being loved on by his new family. He sits for treats and takes them very gently. He does jump on you and would need to be taught not to do this. He also can be somewhat mouthy. The good news is that he wants to please and should be a quick study.. I don’t think he’s been given proper instruction. Also keep in mind he’s still a puppy! He’s very alert, happy, friendly, and playful. He would do well with an active family with older children,. He does have a pretty strong pull on the leash. He appeared to be intimidated by other dogs barking at him, but if you have another dog please ask the shelter for a dog test. The bonus is that Max is already neutered! He’s ready to go home with you.

Story
Most of us cannot imagine our family abandoning us. Well, Coconut didn’t either until one night he found himself tied to a tree behind the Mesquite Animal Shelter. He was scared and confused! He didn’t understand. Luckily employees spotted him there when they came to work in the morning and brought him into the safety of the shelter. Coconut is a one-year-old 62 pound retriever lab mix with attractive markings. He was a abandoned on 10/14. However, in spite of being left behind it appears he’s been well taken care of. He’s an active guy. His sense of smell is very keen. It was difficult taking pictures of him as he kept his nose to the ground. He does jump on you out of excitement and needs to be told to get down. He is active and agile. He could use some behavioral training to channel his energy. He sits for treats and does take them gently. He loves to be loved on (see last three photos). He’s very friendly and a happy guy. He would do well with a very active lively family. He appears to be housebroken. He has a strong pull on the leash, but then he was anxious to get out to do his business. He did not want to meet any other dogs. It appears he was intimidated by them. He needs a yard to explore, but then wants to come in to cuddle and share family time.

Story
Meet Carmelo! He is a 1 yr old Lab/Retriever and Pointer mix that weighs 70lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as an owner surrender on 11/14. Reason for surrender was the owners were moving and could not take him. When Carmelo and I went outside in the yard or in front of the building it was easy to see how much he missed his family. He continued to look for them and wanted to go look for them. He is a big boy and does pull very strongly on a leash. He also will jump on you, so redirection/additional training may be needed. Having a very tall and secured yard so he can run and play in. He didn`t show any interest in toys, yet knows the sit command, At times he does not take treats gently, so some continual reminders to him would be necessary. He is a sweet boy and loves to be petted and given hugs. He has been well cared for and hopes to return to living indoors with his loving family. He didn`t show any interest in the other dogs barking at him, but we always advise to ask the shelter for a dog test if there will be another dog in the home. If you can offer this lovely boy a caring home of his very own, please come meet him.

Story
Meet Sawyer! He is a 6 ½-7 yr old neutered male Retriever/Lab mix that weighs 56 lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/21 as a stray. He has such a kind gentle soul that you can see in his beautiful brown eyes. You can tell he hasn’t had the best life so far, but he hopes his final loving family will come to the shelter to meet him. He is still underweight so we continue to feed him twice a day. Tho he does have some arthritis, once he gets moving, he does very well. He enjoys going for walks and will raise his nose for the smells, and enjoy the warm sun on his skin. He is a happy, easy going, friendly, yet curious guy. He walks well on a leash and takes treats gently. He enjoys being petted too. As he walked past other dogs barking at him, he showed no interest. If you do have another dog in the home, please ask the shelter for a dog test. If you take one look into Sawyers eyes, you will see a soul you cannot live without. Come meet him!

Story
Drew’s wish list is not long. All he wants for Christmas is a family to love! Drew is a 5 to 6 year-old retriever/American terrier pit mix that weighs 62 pounds and came to Mesquite Animal Shelter on 12/ 1 as a stray. You can tell from his sweet face that he has a gentle nature. He would do well with children. His favorite thing to do would be to cuddle up with them and bring them comfort. He’s a mellow fellow. When I had him out in the yard he walked around casually. He wagged his tail indicating he was happy to have some attention. He backed up when I asked him to sit because he wanted to please, but he didn’t understand the command. When I sat down he came to me. He’s very sweet, gentle, calm, loving, and laid-back. He walks well on a leash. He did his business out in the yard and he was not interested in meeting other dogs. I did not observe any aggression.

Story
Meet Shadow!   Shadow is a sweet and loyal 3-year-old Labrador Retriever mix with a heart as big as his smile. Despite a tough start after being abandoned at a high-kill shelter in Texas, Shadow has shown nothing but love and resilience. Now he’s ready to find the forever family he deserves!   This handsome guy is a people-loving companion who thrives on being close to his humans. He’s fantastic with kids of all ages and would make a wonderful family dog. Shadow is dog-friendly with proper, slow introductions but would do best in a home without cats.   He’s fully house and crate trained, making him a low-maintenance addition to your household. Shadow is neutered, up-to-date on all his vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and currently on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention.   Shadow does have some arthritis in his hips, so he will need to continue taking joint supplements to stay comfortable and active.   He’s currently enjoying life in a loving foster home in Massachusetts but is open to relocating for his perfect match. Transport can be arranged to other states if needed!   If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who will adore you unconditionally, Shadow might just be your perfect match. Don’t wait—he’s ready to meet his forever family and start his next adventure! ##2234964##
