Most of us cannot imagine our family abandoning us. Well, Coconut didn’t either until one night he found himself tied to a tree behind the Mesquite Animal Shelter. He was scared and confused! He didn’t understand. Luckily employees spotted him there when they came to work in the morning and brought him into the safety of the shelter. Coconut is a one-year-old 62 pound retriever lab mix with attractive markings. He was a abandoned on 10/14. However, in spite of being left behind it appears he’s been well taken care of. He’s an active guy. His sense of smell is very keen. It was difficult taking pictures of him as he kept his nose to the ground. He does jump on you out of excitement and needs to be told to get down. He is active and agile. He could use some behavioral training to channel his energy. He sits for treats and does take them gently. He loves to be loved on (see last three photos). He’s very friendly and a happy guy. He would do well with a very active lively family. He appears to be housebroken. He has a strong pull on the leash, but then he was anxious to get out to do his business. He did not want to meet any other dogs. It appears he was intimidated by them. He needs a yard to explore, but then wants to come in to cuddle and share family time.

Look at Mariah’s unique coloring. She’s a handsome girl with soft brown eyes to match her coloring. She’s a two year-old 58 pound lab/retriever mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/5 as a stray. I was told by another volunteer before I even met her that she was sweet. I certainly concur. She did spend a lot of time looking over the wall and whining. I’m assuming she was looking for her owners. Because of this she will need a tall secure fence. She doesn’t appear to know the sit command and wasn’t particularly interested in my treats. But when she did take a treat she took it gently. She’s very agile as she climbed up on benches and our play equipment. She stayed close. When I sat down, she tried to get up on my lap. She walked very well on a leash looking back at me for approval. She didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs. She’s very sweet, gentle, and well mannered. She wants to be an inside dog so she can share her love with you.

Meet Carmelo! He is a 1 yr old Lab/Retriever and Pointer mix that weighs 70lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as an owner surrender on 11/14. Reason for surrender was the owners were moving and could not take him. When Carmelo and I went outside in the yard or in front of the building it was easy to see how much he missed his family. He continued to look for them and wanted to go look for them. He is a big boy and does pull very strongly on a leash. He also will jump on you, so redirection/additional training may be needed. Having a very tall and secured yard so he can run and play in. He didn`t show any interest in toys, yet knows the sit command, At times he does not take treats gently, so some continual reminders to him would be necessary. He is a sweet boy and loves to be petted and given hugs. He has been well cared for and hopes to return to living indoors with his loving family. He didn`t show any interest in the other dogs barking at him, but we always advise to ask the shelter for a dog test if there will be another dog in the home. If you can offer this lovely boy a caring home of his very own, please come meet him.

This senior mixed breed sweetheart I have named Josephine was out wandering the streets when one of our officers picked her up. No concerned owner anywhere to be found, nor have they come looking for her since she arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/14. Such a shame that this approx 9 year old 56 pound girl has ended up at a city shelter at this stage in her life. She seems depressed and confused about where she is and how she got there. She does fine on a leash though she walks slowly. She has been to the vet and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. She is missing a number of her teeth and therefore needs a soft food diet. A vet report is available upon request. She kept her kennel clean and did her business outside so is possibly house trained. During the photo session Josephine thoroughly enjoyed her time in the yard and roamed about exploring every nook and cranny. She is a calm and gentle girl, mild-mannered and with a sweet nature. She was fine with being petted although didn`t seek out attention. Josephine would like nothing better than a quiet, well-ordered household in which to live out the rest of her life in comfort with plenty of TLC. Please help if you can so that she can get away from the noisy shelter life confined in a kennel and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Sawyer is a 6 to 7 year-old 56 pound blonde retriever lab mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/21. He was brought in as a stray. The bonus is that he’s already fixed. You can also see that he’s very emaciated with his ribs showing. He has concrete calluses on his elbows, and he’s experiencing some arthritis. He responds well to TLC. I’ve got a feeling he has not had much socialization and certainly deserves it. He did a lot of exploring with his nose. It doesn’t appear that he knows a sit command. He’s happy, sweet, curious, gentle, friendly, and easy-going. He walks all right on a leash. He didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs. He did his business in the yard. Please open your heart and home to this deserving senior. You will be well rewarded! He would do best in a laid-back household.

Knut came to us at 3 weeks during a winter storm old and was one of the biggest babies we had seen. That is why we named him after a famous polar bear cub. We are unsure of his breed, and as he gets bigger our guesses keep changing. We do think he has some hound in him due to his elongated snout. He is now 9 months old and weighs 60 lbs. He is neutered, microchiped, and has had 3 rounds of vaccines. We expect him to be quite a large dog fully grown, possibly over 80lbs. However, Knut is a gentle giant. He is very sweet and passive and loves to play with the other dogs. But his favorite thing to do is eat. He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. He is ready for his forever home and a family that wants a big dog with a big heart.

Hi! My name is Mina and I am three years old. I am a Retriever mix with some Great Dane attributes, big ole feet, tall, lean body and a long tail. I am a leaner and as sweet as pie. I eat, sleep and stay in my crate when my mom is not home and sometimes rest in there when I am tired. It is my safe space. This delightfully charming fellow is Jack, brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/23 as a stray. My Dog Scanner app suggests Lab/Retriever with possibly Vizsla in his breed mix. Jack weighs 76 pounds and is about 2 years old. He is a bundle of energy and enthusiasm. He does jump on you quite often in his excitement so perhaps the first order of business for his new owner or foster would be manners training. He chased the tennis balls I threw but wasn`t trained to return them. Another thing he could undoubtedly be taught. Jack is such a happy spunky boy with a real zeal for living! I can see him with a person or family with an active lifestyle going camping, hiking or jogging. Just seems like he`s that the kind of guy. Jack would need daily playtime, exercise and enrichment. He walks nicely on a leash. He did his business outside. Jack has obviously been well cared for and it is surprising that his people have not come looking for him. Though he wants to return to his people, he would be happy to become the beloved pet of another family. He is friendly and likes to be petted. Due to his 76 pound weight and propensity to jump on people, he would not be suited to a family with small children until that can be dealt with. You wouldn`t have to spend much time with this adorable guy to fall in love!
