If you qualify and are interested in participating in this program, please fill out an application online and type "SENIOR" after your name.   **   Karlach has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a common hormone imbalance in dogs and is usually caused by inflammation or shrinkage of the thyroid gland. This progressive destruction of the gland leads to diminished thyroid function and insufficient levels of thyroid hormones. She is on daily medication to manage this. The cost is about $23 a month. **   Because of her history of being untreated, she would benefit from a daily skin support supplement, like a fish oil and super EPA. This is over the counter. She is a senior lady, and a large breed dog, she would benefit from a joint supplement daily, like Dasaquin. This is over the counter. **  Karlach has lenticular sclerosis. Lenticular sclerosis is the medical term for a bluish/white, transparent haze that develops in the lens of the eye in middle-aged to senior dogs. It is considered a normal change in the lens associated with aging and is observed as a cloudiness or bluish discoloration on the pupil. Vision does not appear to be significantly affected in dogs diagnosed with lenticular sclerosis. This condition is not the same as cataracts. Cataracts are  opaque white and represent a change in the ability of light to penetrate to the retina causing diminished vision. **  Dog Selective (liking some dogs but not others) Karlach is waiting for someone to take her home to make their home a better place   Foster Home Feedback  ** Dog Selective 06/22/2024 Foster Feedback: Karlach is doing great! With her diet, medications and supplements, she is down 15lbs, her thyroid levels are great, her skin is looking great, fur is regrowing, and she's even feeling good enough to run. We found this old lady loves fetch! We have a bin full of tennis balls that she loves to dig through to find just the right one. She even sleeps with her tennis ball. She walks great on a leash with an EZ harness. We're still working on riding in the car nicely, but she enjoys the fresh air when she does. She does take medicated baths every two weeks for her skin. We've got a lickmat suctioned to the bathtub wall that keeps her happy and occupied while we wash and scrub her. She's even started hopping in the tub willingly because she knows it's treat time! A bonus to her thin fur is that she dries quickly!   Karlach is still very much a trash dog, so we are working on getting her kennel trained. We have learned to lock up the dog food, as she has figured out how to open doors with door knobs. Smart girl! If anything, she's trained US to keep our house tidy, so there's nothing to get into.  She gets along with with our feral chihuahuas, and smaller dogs haven't been an issue. But she would benefit from slow intros to new dogs, especially at her own house. Most of the time, she doesn't care about the dogs, only the new people!   She is very much enjoying her retirement life, and really loves a comfy dog bed or couch to lounge on. She loves stuffed toys and attacking the squeaker. She would make a great companion for someone looking for a lower-energy pal, who still enjoys walks and throwing a ball for her to casually fetch. She loves just hanging out in the backyard with us and loves basking in the sun.   Overall, she's a great old lady. Apply today for your new best pal!  3/15/24 Foster Feedback: Meet Karlach (car-lack)! She's a senior lab who, like most of us who are aging, has some thyroid issues. Because of this, she has an almost completely bare belly and tail, and thinning hair. She has it well managed with a reasonable-cost medication. She also takes skin and joint supplements, as she is aging gracefully. It doesn't make her any less lovable though! She is also currently overweight, but we are working hard to get her to a healthy weight.  Karlach is a big lover and has discovered the benefits of couch snuggles. She is potty trained, and knows sit, stay, and shake. We're still working on leash skills and traveling in the car, but a little patience and routine will definitely help. She loves being outside. We have a large, fenced-in backyard that she loves to run around and frolic in the snow. We have not kenneled her, but she does fine in a closed bedroom while we're gone. We have discovered she is a trash dog and loves to counter-surf, which is why she is contained while we're gone. Karlach sleeps on a dog bed in our bedroom at night, and does just fine! She has an adorable howl she lets out when she's excited. I love coming home and being greeted this way.    Karlach would love a comfy retirement home. She mostly sleeps all day, but has her moments of energy. She does great with our small dogs, and has been iffy with bigger dogs. She lived with cats before coming into rescue. She's a great old gal who will be a great dog for someone looking for a calmer companion. To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org November 12, 2024, 7:06 pm

A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs."   Rigatoni is on a weight loss journey   Foster Home Feedback  9/27/24 Foster Feedback: Rigatoni has been doing great on his weight loss journey. We know he is under 100 lbs. He is such a happy tail-wagger that it was hard to get him to sit for long on the scale, but when he did, we only saw two numbers! Rigatoni recently had a birthday, turning 7 years old! On his most recent outing he walked down the runway at the Blu Water Creek Bash. He did an excellent job and enjoyed receiving loads of attention from the models!  Rigatoni hasn’t shown any resource guarding incidents lately. He does really well with redirection.  He is still is a cuddle bug and couch potato!  Foster Feedback 5/10/24: We’ve had Rigatoni since 3/24 and he’s adjusted well to our household - still working on shedding some weight. He is a silly, goofy boy with perpetual happy tail. Rigatoni loves attention & pets.  He knows sit and come and is working on stay.  He kennels well, and loves his ball or any toy he can hold in his mouth. Rigatoni is the Goodest boy! Foster Feedback 3/23/24:  Big Rig!  Such a lovely dog.  He is cat, big, and little dog friendly.  He is crated trained and didn’t have one accident.  He doesn’t jump, but he is overweight right now, so not sure if that will change.  He is so sweet, just followed me around. He went out by himself to go potty in my fenced yard.   We went for a walk and he is a big pup, so he can be strong, but with a front hook harness, he did well.  I have not heard him bark, but he gets these little mumbles when he is excited to see you. Rigatoni is a gem, if you are looking for a happy black bear, he is your pup.  **   Rigatoni is anaplasmosis and lyme positive. These are tick-borne illnesses, and he is currently being treated with Doxycycline. Giacomo is a big, loveable teddy bear of a dog, and we’re delighted to be his foster family. Originally adopted as a puppy, Giacomo returned to the rescue due to changes in his previous home. When he first arrived, he was understandably scared and sad, but with a little patience, he started to come out of his shell. Giacomo takes his time to adjust, but he’s a dog with many wonderful qualities. He’s house-trained and enjoys free roam while we’re out. Despite his size and ability to reach counters, he never helps himself to food, demonstrating his respectful nature. Giacomo is dog-friendly and plays well with our resident dog. He loves going on walks, though he does pull a bit on the leash. While generally quiet, he will bark at people outside the window. Giacomo would thrive in almost any living environment and would make a great companion for families with kids or individuals looking for a loyal buddy. 4/7/2022 Foster Feedback: The cone is officially off, and he is more of a goofball than ever! Giacomo (JOCK-co-mo) has been doing great this last week and is really enjoying having his cone off. He gets to do all the things he loves again--playing, running, wrestling with the resident dog. And just when you think he's tired of it, he goes right back into it and is ready for round 2. I had to go out of town for a few days, so Giacomo got to spend a little time with a dog sitter. She was so impressed by how kind and considerate he was with her little dogs and how friendly and sweet he was overall. Giacomo is still pretty cautious in new settings and around new people. We've started working on walking, but rather than focus on how to behave with the leash, we've been working on building confidence getting out the door and out into the neighborhood. He's getting more courageous, and we were able to get down the block the last time we tried. We also took a short car ride to MSUM, and he seemed a lot more comfortable walking around the quad where there weren't as many people or loud noises from cars or buses to distract him. We're still working on potty training, and while he hasn't had any accidents lately, we are still going out every 90 minutes or so to make sure. He still does great in his kennel overnight, though. Giacomo is such a friendly little goofball, and he has been so fun to have as a foster. He's going to be a tough one to see go, but he will be a great addition to any home! 3/29/2022 Foster Feedback: Giacomo has certainly had a busy week - but every week is busy when you're a puppy! He went to the vet on Thursday to get neutered, but being the energetic puppy that he is, he was ready to go go go as soon as he got home. He's been very good and cooperating with the limited activity (and wearing the cone), but he's really eager to start running, wrestling, and playing again as soon as he can! Giacomo also got to spend some time with a sitter this weekend. He did great, only had a few accidents inside, but otherwise made a really good adjustment to a new place for a few days. His sitter said he certainly is goofy! He's still learning his size, and he still misses the couch when he jumps every now and then. As far as training, Giacomo is still working on some of the basics. He's got a really good sit when he knows there are treats coming. He doesn't always want to lay down (he's got way too much energy for that!), but he's quickly picking up on the "wait" command. Being part lab, he's also starting to pick up on fetch and is light-years ahead of what my resident beagle likes to do. Giacomo is an awesome dog who's always making me laugh with just how much of a goofball he is. Sweet, gentle, playful, and super willing to please, he's going to make an amazing companion and pet for a lucky owner! 3/21/2022: Hello, world! Meet Giacomo (JOCK-co-mo)! He is a super sweet and wiggly pup who loves to play. He's a bit timid of new people and places at first (he kinda "chuffs" when he first meets someone new), but he warms up quick with a few treats (string cheese is his favorite). He's only been with me a short time, but he is already starting to get comfortable and come out of his shell. He does great with our resident dog, and they have a blast and get a lot of energy out with some rough and tumble wrestling. He is only a few months old, though, so he's still adjusting to his gangly legs and growing size. Some of the things we've started working on are crating and potty training. He puts up a fuss when he goes in the crate, but he's learning to calm himself down. He's also done great overnight and has only had one accident in the house (because his foster dad wasn't quite quick enough in the morning). He's pretty quiet, too! I haven't heard him bark yet. The only sounds I've heard are when he "chuffs" at someone new or whines when he's first put in his crate. Giacomo will make a wonderful four-legged family member for whoever is lucky enough to have him!To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org November 12, 2024, 7:06 pm

This big lug is a super sweet happy guy. He is still a little uneasy about his new surroundings but is adjusting well. He is currently living with 3 other dogs and 2 cats with no issues. Plugsy loves being around people, but he likes to be busy (bones, toys, exploring). I'm sure this will change as he settles in. He is well mannered when meeting new people, no jumping; he just leans in for pets. Plugsy doesn't like being in a room with the doors closed even if you are with him. He is not destructive, just uneasy and will whine. He has come to work the last couple days and has done well in the office. Plugsy crates like a champ. He goes right to his kennel when coming in from playing fetch outside. He walks well with a harness, but he wants to walk which is a good thing as he needs to lose a few pounds. We are working on car rides; Plugsy loves them but seems a little excited/anxious. If he can stick his head out the window, he is totally happy. We will update again as he continues to settle in.   To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org November 12, 2024, 7:06 pm

Absolutely no dog parks, human parks, puppy school or pet stores for at least 3 months (ends 1/20/25) Foster Home Feedback  11/03/2024 Foster Feedback:  Tequila is a typical puppy - adorable, snuggly, curious, playful, sweet and smart!  He is currently about 10 weeks old and 15 pounds, but growing fast!   Tequila handled his first nail trim like a champ - he just appreciated lots of snuggles in between clips.  He enjoys playing with toys and chewing on his appropriate toys.  He quickly picked up on chasing a tennis ball and picking it up and bringing it back (sort of).  The tennis ball is a little big for him now, but that doesn't keep him from trying to carry it as far as he can!    He loves being outside and exploring the yard.  Tequila is great about taking care of his business when outside, but at his age, there are still some accidents inside.  Most of the time he goes on a potty pad, but occasionally he misses a little.  It usually happens if he has just been playing hard and his foster parents don't realize he should go out after those intense play sessions!  He plays hard and then sleeps hard.  Puppies need their rest to be ready for more play!  He is learning to be respectful of the elder dogs in the house. Tequila goes in his crate easily and is usually content to rest in there.  He will sometimes whine or bark initially but then realizes it's just time for a nap!   At night, Tequila is content sleeping by your feet if he gets to sleep in bed.  In his crate, he will generally sleep through the night.  To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org November 12, 2024, 7:06 pm
