Story
*looking for a low key household* Dog Name: Pau Pau Breed: Lab Mix Sex: Male Age: 8ish Weight: 60 Medical needs: Pau Pau is a distemper survivor. The disease can cause some long-term effect like scarring of the lungs. Due to this, his breathing sounds a little rough but he doesn't require medication. Will be be running any marathons? No! But he is content with short walks. Pau also used to weigh 114 pounds and his previous foster worked hard to get him to a healthier weight, so it's important that his adopter doesn't overfeed him. The thing about Pau is that he has a bottomless stomach and a nose for culinary delights, so you will have to put your foot down and offer him healthy snacks. Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes. However, Pau can be crate/barrier reactive with new people, especially men. Good in the car: Yes Good on a leash: Ok, some light pulling Energy level: Medium Need a fenced in yard: No Dog Friendly: Yes, currently fostered with 3 other dogs and gets along great with all of them If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No Cat Friendly? Unknown (can be tested) Kid Friendly: yes, he was previously fostered with young kids and is currently fostered with two teenagers. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Due to potential reactivity (and since Ive never personally observed him around younger kids) I would recommend teens Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Pau knows sit, down and is currently working on the place command. He’s the perfect example that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and eager to learn if it involves treats. Speaking of treats…. Pau Pau came to us from Texas where he was found as a stray weighing a whooping 114 pounds After a 1.5 year diet he is now down to 60ish pounds. That being said, he acts like a 4-legged vacuum cleaner and will try to snatch food if you're not careful. We’re looking for an experienced owner since Pau can be reactive when meeting new people. Meets are best done outside with some tasty treats. Once he warmed up to you, his tail never stops wagging. Literally NEVER. Story
Dog Name: McLaren Breed: Retriever Mix Sex: Male Age: 2 years Weight: 41 lbs Medical Needs: Just completed heartworm treatment and will need follow up appointment in sixth months with Avenue Veterinarian Clinic in Milford, DE. This appointment will be covered by Grass Roots so long as adopters continue his monthly preventatives. McLaren also has hip dysplasia and some arthritis, which is managed by medication; he will need to continue this medication for life. Additionally, McLaren takes a joint supplement daily. Housebroken: Yes, occasionally will have an accident as he is extremely hesitant to go outside in bad weather, which is probably due to his injuries. Crate trained: Yes, McLaren’s crate is his safe place, his crate is in his foster’s living room, and he loves watching everyone. He sleeps in his crate and naps throughout the day. He rarely whines or barks, and when he does, a kitten is usually involved! He will also remind everyone when it's dinner time, just in case we should forget! Good in the car: McLaren was either hit by a car, or thrown from a car, but is now doing very well with riding. He may need help getting in due to his hip dysplasia, and arthritis, but once in, he will lay right down and take a little nap. He has barked at strangers at the gas station, but hey, at least no one will dare try to make off with your car with him there to defend it! Good on a leash: Yes, however, traffic makes him extremely anxious, so walking around in the yard or in a quiet area is preferred. He is slowly getting more comfortable walking along our back road in the grass, but at times still gets anxious. Energy level: McLaren has moments of zoomies, but due to his injuries, we avoid any strenuous activities. He doesn’t enjoy the rain and can be extremely hesitant to go outside if the weather is bad. Need a fenced in yard: Not necessary, but when the sun is shining, McLaren does enjoy going out in our fenced in yard to get lots of sniffing in. Dog Friendly: Yes, McLaren currently lives with 9 other dogs in his foster home ranging in age and breed/size. He does best with our older dogs who are less active. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? It is not necessary for him to have another dog in his new home. Cat Friendly? Yes, however, our kitten loves climbing all over his crate late at night so we cover his crate so he can get some rest. Kid Friendly: McLaren has not been exposed to any children, however, older teens who understand McLaren’s needs and anxiety would be best. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? 12 and up for his comfort. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? McLaren has stranger danger and needs slow, gentle introductions to new people - typically with ham or some other high-reward treat involved. Once he warms up, he is very sweet, gentle, and kind. His medical issues aside, he's a very happy boy who is looking for a family that likes tv/movie time over strenuous activities. He likes nothing better than just laying down with his foster family and getting scratches and love. Don't let those sad eyes deter you - McLaren is a handsome, young dog who truly loves his people. You'll get to see the side of him others might not, and it may take a bit of work and patience to get there, it'll all be worth it in the end. Coming to Delaware from Waco, Texas was his second chance, and he's been thrilled to make the most of it so far. With his gorgeous reddish fur and those sweet golden eyes, he'll win hearts quickly. Hopefully some of those hearts belong to the people who will give this stellar guy the life he never knew was possible. Story
Dog Name: Genna Breed: Lab Sex: F Age: 6 1/2 years Weight: 73 lbs Medical Needs: none Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes Good in the car: The best! Genna loves being in the car, especially when all the windows are down and she can check everything out! Good on a leash: Genna does great on the leash. She loves being outside, so this is where she’s most energetic, but obeys well on walks or even just relaxing on the porch. Energy level: Genna has a decent amount of energy. When she is inside, she is relaxed and laid-back, but she loves people so this is where she tends to get super excited. I would rate her energy level about a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Need a fenced in yard: Not needed, but would recommend so she can be outside whenever possible. Dog Friendly: According to Genna’s history, she can be dog selective. She co-existed well with all but one of the other dogs in her previous home. The other dog was an assertive female, so her new home should not contain one of those. Since being with her foster, there have been no issues to date. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No Cat Friendly? I have not had her 1-1 yet, but with our neighborhood cats, she may look, but then keeps on walking. Kid Friendly: Yes! If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? I have 2 kids, 8 & 12, Genna adores them both, but loves my youngest and constantly follows her and lays with her during rest periods. Her previous owner had smaller children as young as 4 years and never had any issues. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Genna is a beautiful, nature-loving dog who loves people and just being with you. She does really well on her own too and especially loves her treats after coming inside from bathroom breaks and walks Fosters Location: Long Neck, DE Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app ##2150863##

Story
Dog Name: Arabella Breed: Lab mix Sex: Female Age: 3 Weight: 35 Medical Needs: Heartworm positive Treatment scheduled for 11/25 and 11/26 at our vet in Milford. Appts must be kept in order for GRR to cover the cost. Housebroken: Does great with a schedule. Crate trained: Yes! She loves her crate. It's her safe space. Good in the car: Yes Good on a leash: Work in progress. She is great in the yard at her foster home, but is easily spooked outside of that. Energy level: Pretty chill with an occasional burst of zoomies Need a fenced in yard: Yes. Since she is still so skiddish, a home with a fence will give her the best opportunity to settle in and gain confidence. Dog Friendly: Yes! If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? Yes. She would do best in a home with a friendly, confident dog to show her the ropes. Cat Friendly? Yes Kid Friendly: Unknown If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Arabella is one of the recently rescued pups who was saved from the overcrowded "rescue" in GA. She had little socialization there and likely never knew anything outside of her kennel. Because of this, she is very timid and nervous with new people and places. She didn't take long to settle in at her foster home, though she is still skittish around men or when there's any sudden movement. Her response is to run to her crate until she determines she's safe. She is easily coaxed out though with just a few gentle words. Arabella is finally learning what it is to be a family pet. She loves tossing her toys around and cuddling on the sofa. She especially loves her doggy friends and racing them around the yard at night. Arabella's ideal home would be one that's on the quieter side, with people who are willing to give her a little time and space to settle in. She will win you over in no time with her adorable pouty lip, and her evening zoomie antics. Bonded Pair!!!! Dog Name: Shirley Breed: Labrador Retriever Sex: Female Age: 8ish Weight: 70 pounds Medical Needs: Shirley is Heartworm positive. She has a mast cell tumor that she may need removed when she is cleared of HW. She has arthritis, but it is managed with twice daily Carprofen and she gets around well with no sign of discomfort. Shirley will need to be retested for HW in 2-3 months. Adopters must live within 1 hour of Milford and be willing to travel there for vet appts…or take over Shirley's medical at their own expense. Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes Good in the car: Yes Good on a leash: Yes, I am able to easily walk Laverne & Shirley together without issues. Energy level: Low Need a fenced in yard: No. Both Shirley & Laverne stay close by when not leashed and have good recall. Dog Friendly: Yes. Shirley & Laverne are wonderful with other dogs. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? She comes as a bonded pair with Laverne Cat Friendly? She has not met my cats, but I cannot imagine there would be an issue. Kid Friendly: Unknown If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? She may be slightly fearful of fast moving, loud children. She would probably do better in a quiet home, but would be fine around children occasionally if the child is patient, gentle, and supervised. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Shirley spent most of her life as a puppy mill breeding dog and then confined to a cage under deplorable conditions. She is shy and timid, but super sweet and as easy going as they come. She will take a little patience to warm up to you.
