Story
Royal is a sweet black Lab and German Shepherd mix with adorable shepherd paws and a whole lot of puppy energy. She’s in her charming awkward phase, where her long legs make her scamper in the cutest way! Potty training is still a work in progress, but this determined girl is learning quickly in her foster home. At first, she didn’t quite understand playtime with her foster sister, Mia, but now she’s discovering the joy of running and romping around the yard. Since she’s new to life in a home, Royal doesn’t grasp the concept of “human food,” so you can enjoy your meal time relatively easily without having her in your face trying to get a taste. Royal is full of love and unlimited energy, which makes lounging a little bit challenging for her, but we can already see her future as the ultimate cuddle bug when she matures. With time, training, and patience, Royal is ready to become someone’s perfect companion. Could that be you?

Story
You`re going to want to listen to my story because it`s a real tear jerker. I came in as a stray puppy in August. I was running the street alone as a three month old puppy until a nice lady scooped me up and brought me to the shelter. I`m not sure why, but despite my cute faces, bubbly personality, and fondness for all dogs and humans alike, no one has picked me. I`ve been here over 3 months. I`ve spent half of my little life here at the shelter. I`m still a baby but I look a little older now. I`m going to be a medium sized adult when I get fully grown, and even though I`m in my teenage years I`d like to think I`m pretty well behaved (and also really handsome). My favorite volunteer took me to the groomers to get a bath and I had a blast playing with the other dogs and all of the toys they had. I did great! I`d love a home with some kids and maybe another dog, but to be honest I`m not that picky - I would just like any family to call my own. My spirits and my hope are still high that I`m just waiting for that special someone for me but don`t keep me waiting much longer! Come down to HSSM and ask to meet Ollie. I promise you won`t be sorry!

Story
Hitchcock’s story is a bit of a mystery. He was picked up on County Farm Road in Gulfport on October 10, 2024, by Harrison County Animal Control, wandering without a collar or tags. A scan revealed he had a microchip, but unfortunately, it had never been registered. Despite efforts to trace his owner, no one has come forward, and Hitchcock has been waiting at the Humane Society of South Mississippi ever since. At around 4 years old, Hitchcock gives every sign of having come from a loving home. Somehow, he lost his way, but he hasn’t lost his gentle heart. From the moment you meet him, you’ll see he’s a true sweetheart—a sucker for belly rubs and eager to show off his impeccable manners. He knows “sit” and “lay down,” and if you have a ball to throw, Hitchcock is ready to play fetch until your arm gives out. This boy is as gentle as they come, making him a great fit for families with children or anyone looking for a loyal, loving companion. Hitchcock might not be the size of a lap dog, but his soft and sweet demeanor makes him perfect for cuddles. And let’s talk treats—Hitchcock’s love language might just be snacks, as he’s happy to sample anything you offer him.Hitchcock arrived at the shelter heartworm negative, microchipped, and neutered, so he’s all set to head home with you the same day you fall for him.If you’re ready to meet this handsome, loving fella, stop by the Humane Society of South Mississippi at 2615 25th Avenue in Gulfport. We’re open Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Hitchcock is ready to turn his mystery into a happily-ever-after with you.

Story
Layla is a young black Labrador Retriever/Hound mix who’s ready to fill your days with love, fun, and a little bit of laughter. She’s sweet as can be and lives for those moments outside the kennel, chasing a ball and soaking up quality time with her favorite people. While she has an active spirit, Layla’s energy is more about enthusiasm for life than being unmanageable—she’s simply excited to experience the world by your side. She’s still learning her manners, especially when it comes to greeting visitors. Right now, her favorite way to say hello is by hopping up like a playful bunny to give you a hug! With some guidance and training, she’ll learn how to channel her affection into those cuddles she’s famous for—just wait until you’re on the couch, and she nestles her face into your chest.Layla is already off to a great start with “sit” under her belt and a willingness to learn. She’ll thrive in a home ready to teach her the basics and help her become the well-mannered companion she’s meant to be.Layla came to HSSM on September 26, 2024, after being found on Morgan Avenue by Harrison County Animal Control. She was wearing a tattered brown leather collar but had no ID tags or microchip, and sadly, her previous owners never came to reclaim her. Now, Layla is waiting for a fresh start with a family who will love her for the loyal and affectionate dog she is.If Layla sounds like your perfect match, visit her today at the Humane Society of South Mississippi, 2615 25th Avenue in Gulfport. We’re open Tuesday through Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Layla can’t wait to meet you!

Story
Gordy is a fun loving, energetic lab mix, who loves affection. Gordys past living situation was outside, with many other dogs, and no vet care. Since Gordy has been rescued, he has been treated for mange, tick disease, and heartworms. He has made tremendous progress in his foster home, but is still very fearful of strangers. Gordy has a lot of personality, is a great communicator (you’ll always know exactly how he’s feeling), and plays well with other dogs, would also thrive as an only dog. Gordy gets very excited, so a home with small children or small animals will not work well for him. Gordy is about 60 pounds but thinks he is small and petite. He is neutered, walks well on a leash, knows some basic commands, and is completely house trained (those are great accomplishments in such a short time). Gordy lives for playtime and snuggling with his person, he does not like to be in a kennel. He will attach himself to the person he trusts, but this will take some time an effort to gain, but he is worth it! If you are looking for a lazy dog, he will not be the one for you. If you are looking for a best friend who adores you and is always ready to hang out, Gordy may be your perfect fit! Story
Turbo’s journey has been anything but smooth, but this resilient 5-year-old Hound dog is still holding out hope for a family who will give him the forever home he deserves. After arriving at our shelter as a stray in April, Turbo faced a roadblock when his previous owners refused to reclaim him due to the neuter requirement mandated by city ordinance. He’s happiest when he’s outside, nose to the ground, soaking in all the scents the world has to offer. Long walks, outdoor adventures, or simply exploring a backyard—these are the things that light Turbo up.This incredible dog is housetrained, great with other dogs, and gentle with kids. He’s the kind of companion who’s ready to match your pace, whether you’re hiking a trail or unwinding at the end of the day. Turbo’s story may have had its share of twists, but he’s ready to write the next chapter with a family who will love him unconditionally. Could that be you?
