Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi there, I’m Jackie—though my first family called me Junie, so I’ll happily answer to either! I’m a sweet, potty-trained girl with a heart full of love to share. While the world still feels a little big and scary to me, I’m learning to trust it one kind person at a time. I can be shy, especially around men, but with gentle encouragement and patience, my playful and loving side starts to shine. I’m a doggy social butterfly and feel most confident with a friendly, older pup sibling to guide me. Bonus points if they’re calm and can show me the ropes! I also do great with cats—yes, I’m that well-mannered—and I’m kennel-trained, sleeping peacefully through the night like a pro. I already know some basic cues like “sit” and “stay,” and I love going on walks, especially when I have a routine to rely on. Because I’m still working on building my confidence, a quieter home with older kids who understand my need for space would be perfect for me. My ideal family is one that can offer love, patience, and a nurturing environment where I can continue to blossom. I was adopted as a puppy and loved dearly, but I recently came back to Ruff Start Rescue through no fault of my own. My previous adopters took great care of me, but I need someone who can give me just a bit more time to feel secure and truly thrive. If you have a kind heart, a cozy spot on your couch, and  a pup friend to help me find my footing, I’d love to meet you! Let’s take the first step toward a lifetime of love and companionship. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hello my friend, my name is Pearlescent Moon and I am so so happy to meet you, especially if you plan to give me pets! I love pets almost more than anything else and I even bunny hop with my back legs when you scratch my back. My foster family says I am quite the silly girl and that I love to play fetch a little too much. I just like to bring them my toy to throw, over and over again! They say I have the prettiest fur, and even though my eyes are cloudy they speak to your soul. I do a lot of talking and my foster Dad thinks I must have been a dinosaur in my previous life for some of the noises I make.    I have a very sad backstory but I have turned a new page here with my foster family and I am so excited to start a new life with you! I came into rescue very underweight with uncontrolled diabetes and thyroid issues due to severe neglect. With the help of the amazing vet team here at Ruff Start Rescue I have been able to get my diabetes under control and am now only a few pounds away from my goal weight! Unfortunately due to the time I was not being cared for I have some eye issues and unnaturally long quicks in my nails which means they have to be kept longer than is typical. Neither of these bothers me too much however. I will need to be on two medications for the rest of my life and my weight will need to be carefully managed moving forward as well.    Can I learn how to be loved again with you?   Pearlescent Moon is from an owner surrender. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi, I'm Poe.   I came from a local shelter where my time was up and needed a rescue. I came from a home that took me to the dog park so I could hang out with my friends.  I am good with kids and other animals as well.  What my foster mom didn't expect was how loyal and lovable I am.  I follow her from room to room and sit by her side.  Foster mom has some crabby senior dogs and a few young dogs living with her.  The older dogs don't care for me much but that's okay.  I give them a grin and go on my way and then play with the two dogs closer to my age. I share toys and I am not possessive of my food.  I do love snacks and treats though!  I am a big boy with a lot of energy so having a buddy to run with or another dog to play with would be greatly appreciated.  I don't like being in the crate and do the cutest sad boy howl but will accept my time in there with a kong treat filled with peanut butter and treats.  I come when I am called and know how to sit, shake and lay down.  At night I sleep in foster mom's room with the other dogs and stay on my dog bed, not making a peep, until morning.  I am a diamond according to my foster mom.  She thinks my heart shows through my fur and is already in love with me.  I am a catch!   E.A. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi there! My name is Gravy, and I’m a fun-loving, high-energy pup who can’t wait to meet you! I thrive on new friendships and absolutely adore everyone I encounter. My foster family thinks I may have had a previous home because I came to them both potty trained and crate trained. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find my way back home, but I’m ready to fill your life with love and joy! I’m great with all kinds of people, but since I don't realize my size with small kids, it’s something we’ll need to figure out together. I sleep through the night in my cozy kennel without a peep, just waiting for morning cuddles! Speaking of cuddles, I’m the biggest snuggler you’ll ever meet! I often think I’m a lap dog, despite weighing in at a solid 50 pounds! I’m all about the belly rubs and scratches. Find that sweet spot on my belly, and you’ll see my leg go into high gear with excitement! I know some basic commands, and I’m working hard on my manners, although I’m still figuring out my boundaries. If you’re looking for a loving companion who brings joy, energy, and plenty of cuddles into your life, I’m your guy! Come meet me, and let’s create some wonderful memories together!   Gravy is from a local impound. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Chily was rescued from the streets of Houston, Texas.  This sweet little girl has a GO-GO-GO type of personality.  She would love a family with kids to play & grow up with! This playful, high-spirited pup loves toys, playing with other dogs, and giving out plenty of kisses. She's always up for fun and affection! Chily thrives with company and has never been alone, so she'd love to find a forever home with a friendly resident dog to help her learn the ropes. Her ideal day is full of activity: morning playtime, meals, and hanging out with her humans or canine buddies. Chily is crate trained, however, she can be vocal for about 15 minutes when crated.  Covering her crate will help her settle faster, as she suffers from puppy FOMO. She will most likely crate with no issues if she is consistently crated in her new home here in MN. While she’s in great shape physically, Chily is still learning the ropes of being a well-behaved dog, all part of growing up! She's currently working on potty training with her Texan foster family, and is catching on quickly.  She should be totally potty trained in no time at all if she's kept on a consistent schedule.  Puppies are pretty much all the same.  Sleep, eat, play, poop, repeat.. lol. Making sure that you are able to take her outside for about 20 minutes approximately 20-30 minutes after she eats is crucial to her potty training journey.  She’ll need a patient adopter who has the time and energy to train her, as well as play to burn of that puppy energy. If you're looking for a lively, loving pup who’s ready to learn, Chily might just be your perfect match!  If you think your family would be the perfect place for this sweet girl to land here in MN, please fill out an adoption application today! Chily is from Texas.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Shadough! Shadough is a sweet and playful Labrador Retriever/Pitbull mix puppy looking for his new home just in time for Christmas! This goofy boy is full of energy and charm, with a love for toys and a knack for turning anything into a plaything—so puppy-proofing is a must! He’s been living with big dogs, cats, and even a toddler in his foster home. While he’s friendly and eager to please, he’s still learning his manners and can get a little too excited at times. Shadough would thrive with another playful pup or an active family to help him burn off energy and teach him the ropes. When it’s time to chill, Shadough loves nothing more than snuggling up on the couch with his head in your lap. Though he can be vocal when crated, he calms down quickly with patience and consistency. This lovable pup needs a family ready to dedicate time, energy, and training to help him grow into the amazing companion he’s destined to be. Story
Rosa is a sweet and loving dog who I think prefers the quiet but can also handle the chaos of children and other animals. I got her from a shelter in AR when she was about 6 months old and she is now 8. Rosa likes walks in nature rather than neighborhoods as she can be overstimulated easily but she'll enjoy it nevertheless. She gets along with cats, children, and small dogs. I think because of her anxiety she becomes overstimulated fast and her excitement to play with other medium/ big dogs may turn into aggression once contact is made. I think with proper training or behavioral help she can overcome that. She just recently developed a little arthritis in her back hips but her vet said with exercise and maybe a little pain meds to help it along she can recover very well. She can sometimes bark a big game to throw you off but she would honestly not hurt a fly. Overall Rosa is a pretty laidback and loving dog that just enjoys being around her human all the time.

Story
We adopted Ruby in April of 2023. A family friend had to get rid of her due to a busy household and work schedule. She was about 6 months old when we adopted her and is now about a year and half. She is a very, very sweet dog and loves people, including children, whom she is quite gentle with. She is half lab, half pit. She loves long walks, chew toys and napping with her pet family. She is a very affectionate dog and loves being petted and cuddling. We had her fixed last May, and she is in excellent health. We want to keep her, but our HOA started to crack down on the number of pets home owners can have. We have another dog that is older and in declining health and we wouldn't feel right trying to find a home for her. We love Ruby but we know that she has many good years ahead for the right family. She is healthy, happy, and loves people of all ages. Truly a great dog for any home.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.     Have you been looking for that diamond in the rough who has been polished to a flawed perfection in foster care?! Look no further because Cheeto is your man! Cheeto is a 67-ish pound, approximately 1-1/2 year old hound mix who had a rough start in life.  He has been trying very hard learning how to be the goodest dog while in foster care. He is very food motivated and he loves to learn & please.  He is 100% house trained and kennel trained. He is kenneled for a full work day right now and does great.  Cheeto thrives on routines, consistency, love, and positive reinforcement. He loves his walks on a gentle leader and really enjoys zoomies in the backyard. Cheeto has a lot of emotions and is learning how to properly express them. Because of this, he sometimes takes a little longer when he meets new dogs. He loves being part of a pack but it will likely some extra take time, patience & understanding when introducing him. He would probably do best as an only doggo, even though he has lived with other dogs.  Speaking of attention, his favorite spot in the whole world is on your lap cuddling. He crawls right up onto your lap and into your heart. He also spends the night curled up next to me in bed, the closer the better. He sleeps through the night and wakes up with kisses to the alarm. He would do best in a home without cats. He loves to chase them. If you have a dog-savvy cat who won't run away and will give him a good swat, he will respect that. Cheeto has become the perfectly- imperfect dog looking for his forever home. If you'd like to learn more, please reach out! Interested in fostering and/or adopting? Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Nala is a beautiful young golden retriever who is learning rules and boundaries in her foster home.  She is anxious and fearful at times but with a steady schedule and routine we are really starting to see her blossom.  Nala is uneasy and nervous around children so she cannot be placed in a home with them or in a home where they visit regularly.  Nala is very nervous of her collar and harness being touched.  We are diligently working on her crate anxiety so no shared walls and she cannot be left unattended outside of the crate due to her not understanding that certain items shouldn’t be chewed.   Nala seems to be ok with other dogs and cats but we haven’t fully introduced her as she is unsure but has had no reaction to seeing them through a gate.  She enjoys walks and playing with a tennis ball.  She is potty trained and has not had an accident here in the few weeks I’ve had her.  Nala needs an experienced owner who will go slow with her and not introduce her to everything at once. She needs to go at her pace.  Getting her into a training program will be key in bonding with her and allowing her to be the dog I know she can be with patience and guidance.  Nala is from an owner surrender.
