Story
Alissa is a beautiful senior Labrador with a black coat and a gracefully graying muzzle that reflects her years of wisdom. At 11 years old, Alissa is looking for a family to call her own after a challenging start in life as she was rescued from a hoarding situation. Alissa has found comfort in her foster home, where she enjoys lounging on the couch and resting on her own dog bed. Her sweet and gentle nature makes her a loving companion who thrives in a caring environment. Alissa would do best in a home where she can enjoy her golden years surrounded by affection and security. She is well-mannered and content with relaxed activities, making her an ideal match for someone looking for a devoted and loving friend. She wouldn't mind being a solo dog or sharing the love with another doggie friend. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to a loyal companion, Alissa would be thrilled to start a new chapter with you! Send in your adoption application today at https://underhoundrailroad.org/adoption-application/.  Alissa is currently being fostered in North Carolina and may transport as far North as Maine to her adoptive home. November 3, 2024, 4:42 pm

we purchased this puppy when we lived in an area that had a lot of space to run, we moved to a more suburb area and recently had a baby, we don’t have enough time for Sam. He is high energy and needs somebody who is committed to be able to train him and let him run lots. It’s hard with the three kids we have. He has been running off to the neighbors lately. he is a beautiful purebred lab, he will make somebody an amazing pet

Story
Meet Mandy! This sweet and spunky girl is back at the Bangor Humane Society and ready for her next adventure. Originally found as a stray, she was adopted after our 2022 Paws on Parade event, but sadly, she`s returned because the match just wasn’t quite right. Now, Mandy is on the lookout for her perfect fit!Mandy is a high-energy, loving gal who would thrive with an experienced dog owner. She’s not a fan of dog parks or doggie friends, so she`s best as the only animal in the home. Mandy has some stranger danger and can get protective of her people, so her dream place would be a low visitor and low foot traffic home where she can be her loyal self with older teens or adults who truly understand her. All humans in the home must meet with Mandy before an adoption can take place.Mandy is more than what meets the eye! She’s got a sharp mind and a heart full of love. Not only does she handle a leash like a pro and enjoy car rides, but she knows some basic commands. Most importantly, Mandy thrives on being close to her people, giving out kisses and cuddles-once she decides you’ve earned it! If you think you might be the right match for Mandy, reach out to us at BHS by phone, email or stopping by! She`s waiting to meet her forever companion!

Story
Laika is officially up for adoption here in Maine! If you remember our post, she was the dog that came from the vet’s office. The office where her owner brought her to be euthanized because one of their cats was no longer with them because of her (unsure how involved she was). As a back story, she lived with 5 other dogs. She wasn’t brought out a whole lot, and based upon her behavior…no one ever spent any positive time with her. When she first arrived, she was TERRIFIED. She bolted every second there was a sound. She had a harness and super tight collar on for the first week she was with us. She cowered ALL THE TIME. Fast forward to today. She is spayed and up to date with shots. She is still very timid. She has connected with me, and looks for me. She wags the tip of her tail. She wiggles now and bounces. She looks at things instead of bolting. I can take her out with a slip lead. She cuddles. It is now time for her to have a real home. Us keeping her isn’t an option as she needs so much more than a rescue home can give her. She needs to be loved. She needs to know that there are still good people in the world. She needs someone who will walk with her or spend time in a secured yard. She needs someone that can just hang out with her, teach her. Other dogs are still touch and go. After what she has been through, it’s understandable. Because she is 2 years old, there is so much growth that can happen if someone puts the time in. Absolutely no cats, no small animals, no small dogs period. No aggression behavior towards people has been shown.

Story
MADYSEN is a 4 year old, spayed female mixed breed (Lab/Terrier mix) who was transferred to Charley's from an overcrowded shelter in the South after she was found stray with another dog, possibly her brother. Her brother was adopted from the Southern shelter leaving Madysen behind. As Madysen was a stray, we have very little information about her past. Here is what we do know. Madysen is a very sweet girl who needs someone with patience and understanding to love and train her. She is a puppy in large dog's body. She is very strong and playful. She will need an adopter that will commit to a good deal of daily exercise all year round (running, hiking, playing in a fenced yard, possibly doggie daycare). She will also need positive reinforcement obedience training. As Madysen was found with another dog, she may do well in a home with another male dog of similar size and energy. She would not be a good match for small or senior dogs just due to her energy and play style. We have no information on how Madysen reacts to cats. As a result, a cat free home, or one that can initially separate cat from dog to do slow introductions, is required.Additionally, as part of the adoption process, any resident dog(s) will be asked to come to the shelter for a meet and greet.Due to lack of known history and Madysen's rough and tumble greetings, we are looking for an adult-only home with no children. One where someone is home more often than not would be ideal. Although we do not think she would intentionally injure a child, she is mouthy when she plays and also does jump up. She does not realize her size or strength.Madysen is spayed and up to date on vaccines. She tested negative for Heartworm and is on monthly prevention. She has been diagnosed with minor cherry eye. She has been examined by an eye specialist at Portland Specialty Care who said that surgery could cause more problems than it would solve. The recommendation was to leave it alone. She also receives over-the-counter eye drops as needed for allergies / eye redness. Please considering opening your heart and home to Madysen.*** IMPORTANT!***IMPORTANT As a “southern” dog and due to the high rate of heartworm infection in the warmer climates, it is critical that Madysen be kept on monthly heartworm prevention ALL YEAR LONG not just in the summer months. It takes 6 months for heartworm larva to turn into adult worms that then are visible on a heartworm test.Monthly prevention will kill any larva. Adoptive parents must commit to this prevention schedule as well as heartworm testing every 6 months for the first year and annually after that.Heartworm prevention costs about $120 a year. Compare that to treating a dog for heartworm (a deadly disease) an expense of thousands of dollars for a treatment that is dangerous and difficult for the dog.  ##2156793##
