Story
LARRY is a special dog to us! He is a 2 year old male, mixed breed dog. A relative's DNA came back with German Shepherd, Beagle, Basset and Chow as the predominant breeds. Go figure? To us, he looks just like an English Lab. LARRY grew up in less than desirable, outdoor conditions. He was one of a backyard pack and was completely raised by canines. To his credit, he retains many of the loving qualities we love in dogs. He bonds quickly to his owner and is very loyal. He is great with other dogs. He is respectful of everything and everyone around him. For us, Larry is the consummate rescue dog. He will take a little time. There is still so much for him to experience in his new world. We initially placed Larry in a great foster home. Here, he made great strides learning how to live indoors with a family. He discovered the comfort of napping on the couch. He took delight in getting his favorite snack - Italian bread. But they could only build on his social skills so far. His confidence level was built to the point we could enroll him in our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program. We are pleased to report he is handling this beautifully! It is a safe and nurturing environment, yet he has to get used to a lot more activities, noises and people. If something scares him, his inmate is right there to help. In the meantime, Larry is also receiving obedience training. He is going to make someone a very nice companion. His general demeanor is quiet and gentle anyway. If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on Larry's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Additional adoption FAQ's can be found here also. Meets will be set with approved applicants based on our "best family fit" approach. Thank you!

Story
Meet Mack! This handsome guy came into the shelter as a stray and was never claimed. Mack is just under a year and weighs 50 lbs. He's not that tall, but he's solid! He is outgoing, affectionate and has never met a stranger. He would love a family with another young dog to play with. Some puppies have energy and then some puppies have energy! He is working on his leash skills, he is crate and house trained, obedience and composure are the in the works. He doesnt have a mean bone in his body but he does have the horsepower of a Mack truck. This week we saw remarkable progress! He can sit still for 5 minutes! He can do sit and down. He's nothing but one big wiggle when you go visit with him. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and deworming. You won't find a happier dog than Mack! Mack will do best with an active family. At this age, he's on the go! and he'll always be strong but there are kids and dogs out there that can play at his speed. IMPORTANT: Please Keep in mind Mack is under 1 year old with a life expectancy of 14 years. Our guiding principle for adoptions is to seek the right fit for our rescues and the families, including a home that can stay committed to the animal for life. Please note: We schedule meets with approved applicants only. If you're interested in adopting, our process begins with the submission of OUR online application at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.co

Story
Macey is a 9 year of age, Labrador Retriever mix that is looking for her soft landing! Her original owner passed away earlier this year, then the family that was taking care of her had a house fire and couldn't take all the dogs with them to their new location. Macey was a faithful companion that grieved the loss of her original owner. She is kind and affectionate and likes to go for walks. She walks decently on a leash and would benefit from regular exercise. This girl came to us very overweight and has probably lost around 10 pounds. Currently she's about 80 pounds but has a few more pounds to lose. She still needs some firming and toning as she was not given regular exercise in her previous environment. Macey is house and potty trained and doesn't ask for much: healthy food, a short walk and loving attention! She is fully vetted, her bloodwork is good and she is ready to walk right into your heart! If you think you might be a good fit for Macey, please email us at blueridgerescue@aol.com There is an application process.

Story
Peanut is a senior 9ish year old, Lab/Golden mix at about 75ish lbs who was literally "left with the house" when his so-called people, sold their house... they just abandoned him. He went to a shelter for 2 months and they said that he was exceptionally friendly, loves other dogs and passed the cat test with flying colors. (GRRAND has not cat tested him) We are so happy that Peanut went to a foster home and this is what they say: Hi, I’m Peanut! Though I’m more like a Brazil nut! (haha doggie humor!) 'cause I’m a big boy but a good one! I love to eat…but treats…I don’t like them, I LOVE them! When I was at the shelter, I was that dog sitting in the corner of my kennel waiting to be noticed. All the other dogs were barking “PICK ME! PICK ME! and they were picked - over me. (sigh) Just because my muzzle may be a bit gray, or my eyes not as bright or my gait not as gingerly, I got passed over again and again. And then, I got SO LUCKY and someone took me into their home from the GRRAND rescue. Now in my foster home, I go readily into my big kennel. Then when it’s time to go outside, I like to run around the yard and then lay down on my doggie bed under the deck. When inside I will nudge you to be petted, take treats easy from your hand, sit on command, and go lay down when it’s time to. I am learning “Wait” and “Stay.” And I know that “No” means “No”!I walk easy on a leash and love to ride in the car and put my muzzle out the back window. When I am at home and not sleeping, my eyes and ears are attentive to what my foster mom is doing, hoping she will include me. I look forward to having a loving furever family and I will be their buddy and they will be my whole world!Find me on GRRAND’s website - again hoping that someone will PICK ME! PICK ME"! If you would like to meet Peanut, and give this deserving boy a loving home forever, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##1953019##

Story
Doc is a beautiful 4 year old, 100+ish lb Labrador who is hanging out at the GRRAND kennel waiting for his forever family and we can't understand why he hasn't been snapped up and adopted and in his new forever home yet! He cannot go to a home with children, so he is looking for an adult only dog savvy home, and we believe at this time, he needs to be the only pet in the home. He demonstrates all of the usual Lab behaviors; he loves to fetch, swim, and climb on you and park his 100+ lbs body on your lap! He lights up when he sees someone familiar and gives such an awesome welcome; the volunteers at the kennel just love him to bits and can't say enough great things about him. He is a big boy and we have him on a diet right now and he is getting lots of exercise. He has been swimming every day and we are working on his leash manners as he pulls hard - he loves to lunge at squirrels when we go walking. He seems to like the more passive girl dogs than the boys, and we are working on him taking treats from our hand less enthusiastically! The kennel staff says "He is doing well at the kennel. He loves attention and to be petted. We are still learning about Doc so please check back in a couple of weeks for more info on this handsome guy"!  If interested, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##2000231##

Story
ORION is a 2 year old, male mixed breed dog that weighs 48 lbs. From his foster mom "He is 98% joyful pup, 2% brat and 100% worth it!" Adopt Me! takes pride in getting to know our dogs well so we can ensure a proper fit, forever home. This is extra important when we have a dog like Orion. We sent him out as a 14 week old puppy. At this young age, he had no issues. He was returned a year later with an ounce or two of attitude. Orion lives for car rides, a good brushing, snuggle sessions, a nap in a clean laundry pile and the chance to play to with other dogs. He is obedience trained (from a tour in our Paws Behind Bars Prison Dog Training Program). He is also leash, crate and house trained. He also knows the "place" and "touch" command. Orion is all about exercising his intelligence capabilities and is a very motivated learner. The brat factor? Trainers have shared that Orion probably grew up, during his formative time, without proper boundaries. When dogs grow up without boundaries, they create their own. Through their eyes, there is nothing wrong with this, they need order in their lives. On the other hand, the inability to "share", can cause issues. But not to fear! The scale is so heavily weighted in Orion's favor, for all the good qualities he has, that the "not sharing" can be easily managed. It will simply take the right person. He will need a kind, patient but disciplined home. He will benefit from continued obedience training. Another young dog in the house would be perfect! If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on Orion's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Additional adoption FAQ's can be found here also. Meets will be set with approved applicants based on our "best family fit" approach. Thank you!
