Story
Rowena is a 9-10 year old lab mix (we did a DNA test and it came back lab/chow/golden retriever/pointer and several others) - about 60 lbs. She is house/kennel trained, and definitely wants to learn how to dog! She was found in 2019 living in a wood pile in Oklahoma protecting her puppies, so has some trauma there that needs worked through and a dedicated adopter will do so much for her. She needs a very structured living environment and a strong dog-savvy owner. She loves to be outside so would enjoy a nice physically fenced yard (no invisible fencing with her history, sorry). Privacy fencing will be preferred as she guards her territory. She will not do well in an apartment setting since she has a fear of strangers and needs muzzled on walks in strange places. She has been through heartworm treatment and will require an adopter who will keep her on preventatives and regular testing. She does well with dogs as long as they aren't tiny/can't be mistaken for squirrels or rabbits. She chases cats. She is food protective with other dogs, so will need to be fed separate / in kennel as a precaution. Once she is comfortable with you, she likes to snuggle and give kisses and hugs -- but it may take a few weeks for her to warm up fully. No kids for Roe -- fast movements and small creatures with her don't mix. Her adoption fee is $250. If you have an easy-going and patient lifestyle that will give this girl the structure she needs and are interested in meeting Rowena, please put an application in at www.foreverhomedogs.org and we will set up a meet with you!All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots. Senior dogs, at our discretion, are adopted out at $150 per dog because we know they will have less time with your family and may eventually have more needs as they get older. But we feel these dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives as part of a loving family.

Story
Sky is estimated to be about a 2 year old lab mix who was found as a stray in Texas with a bullet above her wrist. Once the bullet was removed, she was sent to us where she was in a split for a couple weeks to try to help her leg heal, but ultimately the vets decided amputation was best. Sky is doing great after her surgery. We actually can’t believe how well she is getting along on three legs! She loves going for walks, belly scratches, and sleeping in bed. She is your typical lab, very playful and energetic at times (you would never know she was missing a limb) and then she crashes and likes to nap on blankets and the couch. She is kennel trained, and mostly potty trained. She does great with other dogs all sizes, and is learning to be around cats. She is very smart and trainable. We can tell she has once had an owner because she gets very excited when we get the leash out to go for walks. Sky does need a few minutes to warm up to humans, she’s timid at first but then she will love you. She could benefit from basic training but she deserves the best home where people will show her love and attention she deserves. If you’re looking for a best friend who won’t leave your side, follow you to the bathroom, and sleep right next to you, Sky is your girl. Sky will do best with older calm kids. All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots. Senior dogs, at our discretion, are adopted out at $150 per dog because we know they will have less time with your family and may eventually have more needs as they get older. But we feel these dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives as part of a loving family.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
- Recently went on a Dog's Day Out field trip and had a great time with his human companions: "Riley was such a sweet boy. He is full of slobbery kisses, and he loved tennis balls and running around. He took care of a pup cup in a few seconds. There were dogs in neighboring yards. He was curious but was easily redirected and not overly phased by them. He did great in the car and seemed to enjoy the ride. I truly can't say enough about how sweet he was." - LOVES playing with tennis balls, and when he was spending time in a foster home he'd play fetch with his foster family every day - Enjoys being close to his people and doesn't totally understand personal space yet, but he's working on it! - Down for just about anything, whether it's cuddling or going on a hike - he just loves being with you! - Likes being in the water - Knows sit and is VERY food motivated; is a great listener and would be fun to train - Appears to be housetrained; just remember that any dog may need time to get used to a new routine and schedule - Enjoys going on walks and does best with a harness; made great progress on his leash manners while in his foster home - Did well with a crate in his foster home - Young, noisy or busy children can be too much for him (mature home recommended) - Can be very uncomfortable and unsure of how to act around other dogs; needs to be the only dog in his home right nowAll adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is currently spending time in a foster home. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please contact fosterinquiry@arl-iowa.org.---- Super cuddly and loving - Loves going on walks and playing with his tennis ball, does best with a harness on walks - Smart boy, knows sit- Prefers to explore and do their own thing here in the shelter, but will likely open up more once they're in a home environment and have had time to decompress - May enjoy spending time with dogs who have a similar play style, but can be shy at first and would do best with a slow introduction - The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Black Weight: 103 Age: 8yrs 2mths 1wks
