Story
In April, we rescued three sweet sisters abandoned on the highway, just six weeks old and starving. We brought them home, gave them love, and watched them grow into amazing 65-pound dogs. Unfortunately, with a small backyard and limited space, we can’t provide them the lives they deserve. Luna, one of the sisters, is truly special. She’s loving, playful, and gently protective—sometimes giving a small growl to her sisters but never being aggressive. She loves to run, play, and cuddle. Luna is doing well with training at Petco and is crate trained. She rarely barks, except for a happy greeting when you come home. While she enjoys playing with other dogs, she’s best suited as an only pet. We’re relocating to New York and can’t find housing that allows three large dogs. It breaks our hearts, but Luna deserves a home where she can thrive. If you’re seeking a loyal, sweet companion, Luna is ready to love you endlessly.

Story
In April, we found three sweet sisters abandoned on the highway, just six weeks old and starving. We brought them home, showered them with love, and watched them grow into beautiful, lively 60-pound dogs. However, with a small backyard and limited space, we’ve realized we can’t give them the full, joyful lives they deserve. Ares, one of the sisters, is incredibly special. She’s a total sweetheart who adores cuddling and giving kisses. She loves to run, play, and snuggle close. Ares has been making wonderful progress with her training at Petco and is learning to be crate trained. She’s also very expressive—always excited to greet you with a friendly bark and wonderful with other dogs. We’re relocating to New York and, heartbreakingly, cannot find a rental that allows three large dogs. Ares deserves a loving home where she can run free, play to her heart’s content, and be cherished. If you’re looking for a devoted, affectionate companion, Ares will bring endless joy to your life

Story
**MUST READ WHOLE DESCRIPTION**   Duke is around 2 1/2 years old and is a Potcake from Abacos in the Bahamas.  He came to us just over a year ago with a condition that causes cysts to form, which puppies outgrow once they mature. Due to this condition he was on heavy steroids and pain medication which has altered his perception of some things, leading to behaviors which make him tough to place.   Duke is definitely a happy boy in his mind, extremely playful, will play fetch all day long, he loves walks, loves his toys and bones and loves having a set routine.  He does however have his downsides that make him tough to place due to the medication effecting him mentally. Oh and if you have a kiddie pool he will be all over it!   Duke needs a home without other dogs because he can get possessive over his "babies" (stuffed animals) and he does not read dogs intentions correctly and vice versa so things can escalate quickly. He also needs a home without kids, as well as one that is pretty routine without a lot of visitors.  He does not have a problem with cats here and some dogs he is okay with, but he has certain behaviors that cause a lot of dogs to end up in fights with him. A fenced in yard is also a must for this guy and an adopter who will listen to our instructions with Duke on what his triggers are, who will be confident when he shows signs of barrier aggression for example and is calm enough to not escalate the situation by yelling or wanting to grab Duke. Duke does mean well and he is an amazing dog, but his aggressive behaviors do not typically match whats going on mentally so he is a challenge. Someone who understands redirection, how your body language is effecting the dog and who is patient is key.   He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, on heartworm prevention, flea prevention, dewormed and healthy minus his "predictably unpredictable" behaviors.   If you think you are the right fit for Duke please email us at islanddogrescue@yahoo.com and tell us why. We get a ton of people who are interested who do not fit his needs, so please do not forget to include this information or we will not respond.  September 14, 2023, 12:20 am

Story
We found Kyra at a retention pond near a conservation area behind our house. She seemed to have been around there for over a week. We contacted a shelter, then ended up adopting her from there back in April 2024. She is so sweet and great with kids which we noticed when we rescued her and the main reason we adopted her. She is protective of our family, especially my toddler. LOVES to run, chase lizards and squirrels. She needs a loving home with a good size fenced in yard to run free, (ours is not fenced) she runs FAST and loves being outside. Loves car rides. She is home trained. My son has been getting lots of sinusitis which we are sure it is from our pet since he never had them before we got her. And now also my husband. Breaks my heart, we have grown to love her so much, she is amazing and deserves the best.

Story
Rusty came to our door in Georgia 2 years ago- he was abandoned. We took him in, he was chipped but the chip was not registered. He is super friendly and lovable with our family/friends but can be leery of strangers and can nip them. We took him to a behaviorist , but it didn't really change anything. It is becoming very difficult to have to worry about him all of the time when he is around new people.
