Story
Lala is a certified Canine Good Citizen! She is smart, loyal and very responsive 2 year old , 65 lbs Shepherd mix (could be purebred Anatolian).  She is spayed and housebroken.  Lala loves the outdoors and is always ready for a walk be it in the busy neighborhood streets or park.  She walks gently on a loose leash and always checks in with her human, should it be a dog or loud garbage truck pass her.  Lala has basic obedience training and can stay in her "place" for more than 30 seconds, even when the human goes out of sight.   She enjoys puzzle toys and the kong and is very treat motivated, making training an enjoyable experience for all. Lala loves playtime with other fur friends and humans of all ages. Lala would thrive in a home that offers her both physical and mental stimulation- walks, puzzle toys, tricks, doggy playdates. Lala prefers lounging free when her humans have to leave her alone.  Lala has completed a training program in Basic Obedience and Manners at Oriondogtraining.com and passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test! Lala is a very social dog and loves everyone she meets. She will be perfect for a family with children and other dogs. She does have higher prey drive so no kitties. Want a fun, easygoing, social companion? Lala is your girl! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Cuddly PalRodrick is a 45lb Lab/Weimaraner mix. Rodrick is such a sweet pal of a dog! He loves playing with his 4-legged sister, watching sports while snuggling on the couch, taking walks in the neighborhood and local parks, long car rides, and hanging out while his foster dad works on his computer.   He has learned that "Sit" is a great default position and he is working on learning his name for recall as well as "Place" and "Down". Rodrick is an enthusiastic learner and shines as he strives to please his human friends!   We do not know why Rodrick landed in the shelter, but he is still learning to be trusting of the world and of strangers. Moments of chaos or surprising appearances of unknown people are very stressful for Rodrick. While on leash he is also unsure about other dogs, bicycles, skateboards or runners. He is working with his foster dad and a trainer to work on his reactivity and learn to trust new people and has made good progress in the past month.   Rodrick is seeking a home where there is some predictability and a calm environment. He connects deeply with a few people, and needs slow introductions to new people. SVPP is working with a trainer and helping Rodrick to learn that he can be safe when the unexpected happens. Continuing training support will be provided to his adopter. Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed/neutered, tested for heartworm, vaccinated (including rabies, if age appropriate) and microchipped.   Adoption fees for dogs: http://www.svpetproject.org/info/adoption Stay up-to-date on what our dogs are up to by following us on Facebook!  https://www.facebook.com/svpetproject SVPP thanks Alec Khanna photography for assistance in taking photos of our adoptable pets.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 2, 2024, 3:54 pm

Dog Day Out Reports from week of October 20th.Today was awesome! I got to go on Doggie Day Out after being in the shelter since April. My new friend took me on a nice long walk around a lake and on a busy trail with lots to see and smell. I am polite and don’t bark at dogs or wildlife although I’m very curious about them! After a nice long walk, I got to explore a pet store with lots of yummy smells. My friend then surprised me with tasty doggie ice cream! Three Words to Describe Me are: Affectionate, Friendly, AttentiveNotes from My Walker: I had such a great day with Miguel! He is an overlooked gem! When we first met, he was a ball of energy coming straight from his kennel but, when I kneeled down, he leaned up against me which made putting on the harness easier. As soon as we exited the building, he showed off what a good boy he really is! Miguel walks nicely on the front clip harness with only mild pulling. He’s a very attentive, affectionate boy. He hopped right into the car, but preferred to stand and sniff out the window. When we exited the car, he sat on his own and waited patiently for me to get my backpack ready. I was impressed! We walked along the Almaden Lake Trail and the connecting Los Alamitos Creek Trail. The trail was busy with lots of people, runners, bicyclists, dogs, and geese and Miguel was the goodest boy! He is a curious, social boy and would like to meet everyone but doesn’t bark and passes everyone politely. He was very interested in the geese at first but then passed them nicely after the initial newness wore off. Miguel checks in often with his walker which is incredible to see. He’s treat motivated and knows sit. He’s affectionate and loved to give kisses and lean against me every time I knelt down to offer him water. He got lots of compliments about what a nice, handsome boy he is!Miguel is social with people and dogs (at the shelter, he participates in doggie playgroups) and would make a great companion!

Story
07/12/24 11:38Bruno is an active middle aged handsome fellow who’s ideal home would have a comfy bed, lots of pets and treats, and multiple daily short walks. Bruno is an affectionate guy and will lean in fully for pets! He absolutely loves treats and sits ready and eager for more. This boy has shown he is potty trained and volunteers make every effort to get him out regularly so he can keep up those good habits and make a seamless transition into a home. Bruno is more interested in treats than toys, but he does enjoy some ball time and loves to sniff! A fun game for him includes sniffing for treats in a pile of toys. Bruno can be vocal greeting dogs, but he is dog friendly and participates in doggie playgroups. This boy is ready for his forever home!

Story
10/18/24 01:14Doggy Day Out Report Today I: met a new friend and went on my very first doggie day out! I love meeting new people and was very excited to meet my new friend. I hopped in the car all by myself and sat nicely in the back, looking out the window. When we got to the park, I was sooo excited to sniff all the new smells and to try and catch the lizards. I showed off my sit for some yummy treats (even though I would rather be sniffing). Finally, we went to Starbucks and I got a pupcup – delicious! Three Words to Describe Me are: Polite, Curious, Friendly Notes from My Walker: Noble is a sweet girl who is excited to meet new people. She immediately ran up to greet me and was very wiggly, despite being quite wiggly she was easy to get leashed up. She hopped in the car all on her own and was very good in the car sitting or lying politely in the back. She is a very sniffy girl and was very excited to smell all the new smells at the park. She was interested but non-reactive to other dogs on the trail and ignored bikes and cars. Was unphased by a truck passing by in close proximity and by the noisy leaf blowers nearby. She was an excellent loose leash walker and doesn’t pull (except for the occasional critter). She knows sit and likes treats but is not super treat motivated. Sometimes gives hunting dog vibes the way she’ll point and pounce on things in the bushes/tall grass (its very cute). She does have a high prey drive, and is very interested in chasing squirrels, lizards, small birds and will occasionally lunge at one if it is close to her. Overall a sweet and well behaved girl (as long as squirrels aren’t involved). 07/17/24 09:44Reason animal needs rescue: Extended length of stay, mental health declining in shelterType: Length of stayDate animal needs rescue by: ASAPImpound type: OSOff stray hold: YesAdditional notes: Extremely energetic spayed female lab mix. Needs active family with no small children. No adoption interest.SD

Story
Meet Dee, the GSP (German Shorthaired Pointer)! This guy came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after his previous guardians were unable to continue caring for him. He has lived in a home with children under 12 years old, teens, men, women and seniors. He lived outdoors entirely in his previous home but is starting to realize the comforts of indoor living (hello plush beds!). Adopters will have to be patient in the transition as he may take a bit of time to get the hang of living indoors. Dee’s favorite activities in his previous home are running around and rolling in grass. When out with volunteers at the Shelter – Dee has enjoyed sniffing around the Shelter grounds and exploring. Dee has met dogs at the Shelter and has solicited play. A home with a resident canine may be a fit provided they meet at the Shelter before adoption. Dee knows “sit” and “shake”. According to the previous guardian, Dee had experience with cats and rabbits previously. A home with other animals may be a fit after a slow introduction and management.Come on in to meet your new BFF today at 1001 Rodriguez Street, Santa Cruz from 11-6pm. All adoptions are first come, first serve in person at the Shelter, and must be completed before 4:45pm.Dee`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor!
