Story
Meet Bessie. She is 28 pounds of energy! Her face looks like a Lab mix but she really is just a small lowrider and a whirlwind of energy. Mostly housebroken and does well in her crate and has fairly good leash skills. Bessie has a ton of energy and would love an active household. She is young and still needs to learn some boundaries as she likes to jump on people and other dogs. She has a few dogs she likes to play with, but would do best as an only dog and to stay away from dog parks as her spunky energy doesn’t always do well with others. She is a fun little gal and perfect for urban living and adventures. She could use some training, but she will make somebody the perfect buddy to go on treks and explore the world. She does calm down after exercise and once she does she’s a snuggle bug. If you are interested in meeting please fill out an application at our website: www.gobeyondrescue.org/adopt Our adoption fee is $450 and includes spay/neuter, microchipping and up to date vaccines. We adopt within 200 miles of San Francisco.

Story
MIKEY 2-Year-Old Black Lab Mix 67 Pounds, Neutered Background: Mikey is a remarkable boy who defies all odds with his boundless enthusiasm and infectious zest for life. He does have malformed forelimbs, but don't let that fool you – his mobility remains untouched. Mikey found himself searching for a forever home due to circumstances beyond his control. His previous owners, regretfully, had to part ways with him because their apartment complex didn’t allow large dogs. What Mikey's Foster Says: Mikey is a super sweet energetic pup with a loving and goofy personality and easy-going manners. He's an incredibly cuddly dog and loves belly rubs. He will pull for the first few minutes of every walk or whenever he sees a dog but otherwise settles down and walks well. Mikey loves attention and is great with passersby out on walks or when sitting at an outdoor restaurant. He loves meeting dogs, but won't "play" with them until he's met them a few times and then he'll chase them or play tug. He doesn't love super aggressive or energetic play and will walk away if a dog is too high-octane for him. When he's off-leash, he can be shy at first when meeting new people and he sometimes barks, especially if he's approached by men or if they try to pet him before he's ready. However, we've had him for two months and have seen a ton of improvement. He goes to an off-leash dog play area twice a day and we've been having most new people feed him treats before he can bark. He's become much better with strangers to where he'll approach them to see if he can sniff out treats or get pets. His leg deformities (overgrown ulnas in each leg according to the vet) barely slow him down, with his only limitations being longer walks. Otherwise, he has all the energy that one expects of a two-year-old and wants to play. He's well-behaved at home. With the exception of one flip-flop, he only plays with his toys and will stay off furniture he's not allowed on. He's crate-trained and sleeps through the night in his crate with no issues. However, we are working on not jumping on people (especially people with food in their hands!) or checking out the countertops. He has been quick to pick up commands (it seems like he knew some basic ones) and very eager to please, but will shy away from harsh words or discipline. Overall he has a middling-to-good recall. He needs some additional work with separation anxiety — he will yelp/whimper/bark a little when left in his crate alone. He would be ok in a home with another dog or dogs — he's lived in his previous foster home with two additional black lab rescues aged 5 and 6 — but feel he would really flourish in his own home. Ok with cats — is curious and will follow them around but doesn’t appear to have any aggression towards them. What Mikey's Rescue Rep Says: Upon meeting Mikey, I met a very friendly and sweet dog that jumped up for attention. He let me touch him all over and welcomed pets. He lived with two small dogs, one that was a little bully and was biting at Mikey's legs, to which Mikey could care less and was more interested in saying hello. We walked around the apartment complex; Mikey did pull but the harness he was wearing was pretty loose. He appeared happy to be out, eagerly pulled towards another dog to say hello, and was fine encountering different people out on the walk. Mikey is the epitome of loyalty and affection. Once he knows you, he becomes a steadfast friend, always by your side, ready to offer cuddles and companionship. He appreciates slow introductions and gentle approaches, which will allow him to blossom into the trusting and affectionate dog he truly is. Mikey harbors a deep aversion to visits to the vet, likely stemming from past experiences. While his fear may make these trips a challenge, it also presents an opportunity for his future family to nurture a sense of trust and security within him. With patience, gentle reassurance, and understanding, Mikey has the potential to overcome his fear and establish a trusting relationship with a caring and patient veterinarian. In the right hands, he can blossom into a confident and happy pup, ready to embark on countless adventures with his new family. Mikey will require a home where he won't be left alone for long stretches of the day and one where he will be a welcomed part of the family. Mikey is searching for a patient and understanding family who can provide him with a loving, forever home. An existing furry companion could be a bonus, as Mikey truly enjoys the company of other dogs. Because he tends to jump on people, a home with small children is not recommended. Medical: Mikey is neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and up-to-date with Rabies, DHPP, and Lepto. Mikey's forelimbs were x-rayed and two vets didn't believe anything practical could be done but as he gets older, could likely develop arthritis. He has shortened ulnas which has led to bowing in his radius. The recommendation was to start him on Dasuquin, which we have, to slow down any arthritis. In consultation with a specialist: surgery was recommended if there was any significant discomfort or impairment to the quality of life which is not the case with Mikey. Should Mikey begin to experience any mobility issues in the future, the specialist suggested exploring surgery at that time. Located In: San Francisco. Story
Dominic -- 10+-year-old black male Lab mix 70-lbs Neutered Background: Dominic's owner recently died, and his caretaker has asked us to find him a fabulous new home. Dominic has lived as an outside dog for the past few months... (but he is now really enjoying life indoors)... What Dominic's Former Caretaker Says: My friend passed away in March and I have been trying to find a home for his dog since then. I believe he is a 12-years-old. I think Dominic has lost some weight since he's been with me; his prior owner had fed him way too much people food. Dominic loves to go on walks. Not sure if he is housebroken. He loves to play with other dogs. He doesn't show any possessiveness over food or toys, but he really hates to give up his toy...no growling, just a stubborn old man. We play ball with Dominic in our backyard and he loves to play with and chase my grandson. Likes to chase cats, but does not harrn them. What Dominic's Evaluator Says: Dominic is probably 10-12 years old. Dominic is very engaging and friendly. Loves being touched and petted. Let me touch and poke/prod him all over. No food guarding -- for both dry kibble (which he wasn't really interested in) and wet canned dog food (which he gobbled right down). Not interested in squeaky toy. Pulls on leash (with flat collar). Did fine with my dog Diesel. Videos from caretaker showed Dominic hanging out just fine with little dogs. Dominic is definitely a mix... I see Lab and possible Rottie -- I think Dominic is a mix of multiple breeds... A little bit of a drooler. What Dominic's Foster Says: What a nice, affectionate dog. If you have a lap, he wants to climb up into it. Rides great in the car. Loves going on walks, but kinda meanders all over the place. Sleeps through the night with nary a peep. Not interested in squeaky toys. A bit of a picky eater, I've had to dress up his dry kibble with some wet food which he gobbles down. He is house broken but not crate trained. He sleeps on a coach (covered by a blanket). Dominic is good left alone and doesn’t chew things up, but I pick up the recycling bag at night if there is a used dog food can in it. He alert barks; Dominic is quiet in the house except when the doorbell rings... but he doesn’t keep barking and stops when told to. He doesn’t have separation anxiety. He is great with people and kids but suggest supervision around toddlers because he is a big guy and could accidentally knock them over. He is okay with most other dogs but gets excited so supervised meet and greets are best. He is a lover. Dominic loves to be cuddled first thing in the am. He Is good on a head leash and a 30-min walk is best. He sleeps a lot, loves the car and loves to be with people. When he needs to go out, he paces by the door and looks at you. He doesn’t bark though so you need to let him about after 3-4 hours in case you missed his signal. When I am gone, he self-limits the water drinking so no accidents. He is used to going about 10-11 hours overnight. He is a lovely guy. What Dominic's Rover.com Dogwalker Says: This boy deserves a good home. Anyone would be lucky to have him. Dominic is a lovable pup that is all about genuine affection. He's such sweetheart, always eager to be close and show his love with cuddles and occasional kisses. What makes Dominic stand out is his easy-going nature. He just wants to love and be loved. On walks, he's generally well-behaved, but his excitement can occasionally get the best of him when he spots other dogs or humans. He might give a gentle tug, but we've been working with him and he's quick to correct, eager to continue the stroll with a wagging tail or say hello when given the “okay”. He shows no aggression, just excitement at the possibility of a new friend. Despite his tough looking exterior, Dominic is a softie at heart. He is always eager to please and be a loyal companion and shows no resistance to any kind of training given to him. Dom is proof that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Dom would be the perfect addition to a person or family looking for a loyal, gentle, and affectionate companion. What Dominic' Rescue Rep Says: Dominic appears to have lived a hard life. Deserving of a nice relaxing new home. Dominic would do fine in a home with other dogs but he may appreciate being an only dog so his people can focus solely on him. Probably not house-broken so that will take some work. Time for this guy to learn what living inside a home with his people is all about. Great dog for older folks that just want a wonderful dog hanging around. Medical: Dominic is current on Rabies and distemper vaccinations, and heartworm negative. In Mid-September he was microchipped, neutered, and had a benign mass on his lower abdomen removed. Teeth are quite worn down but we did not see any broken, cracked or rotten teeth (maybe from chewing on rocks). Appears to have some fur loss on his hind quarters and tail -- likely due to fleas and has been growing back. Located In: Petaluma.
