We simply do not have words, to describe how incredibly sweet Lexi is!! She was sadly used as a breeder dog, and "dumped" with an injured leg, prior to joining our rescue. Lexi recently had the injured leg amputated, but has acclimated to being a "tripod" very well. Her stitches have been removed, and she has received the "all clear" from our vet. Lexi is incredibly well mannered, never makes a peep, great with children, does well with all dogs and cats, and house broken. She would love to have a forever family who is home a lot of the time, loving on her, and giving her lots of snuggles and attention. She would also love to have a sweet doggy friend in the home, for companionship. Lexi is approximately five to six years old and weighs 51 pounds. Wrigley is an absolute adorable doodle, who is fully vetted and microchipped. He currently weighs 62 pounds, so we do feel he will gain additional weight, in the next few months, until he is considered an "adult". Wrigley is very sweet and loving, playful, though can also snuggle on the couch, and be just as content. If you are looking for a playmate for your current dog, Wrigley is your guy!!! He absolutely LOVES playing with other dogs, and has become BEST friends with the foster family's dogs. He most definitely requires another dog in the home, for companionship. Wrigley walks well on a leash, looks forward to his daily car rides, and has a perfect energy level to keep the kiddos entertained! He is currently in foster care with two kitties, and though he does not hurt them, he and the foster's dog do love to chase them around the house, just for fun. *Wrigley does have a coat that sheds, so brushing and keeping his coat maintained will be needed.. Story

Most of us cannot imagine our family abandoning us. Well, Coconut didn’t either until one night he found himself tied to a tree behind the Mesquite Animal Shelter. He was scared and confused! He didn’t understand. Luckily employees spotted him there when they came to work in the morning and brought him into the safety of the shelter. Coconut is a one-year-old 62 pound retriever lab mix with attractive markings. He was a abandoned on 10/14. However, in spite of being left behind it appears he’s been well taken care of. He’s an active guy. His sense of smell is very keen. It was difficult taking pictures of him as he kept his nose to the ground. He does jump on you out of excitement and needs to be told to get down. He is active and agile. He could use some behavioral training to channel his energy. He sits for treats and does take them gently. He loves to be loved on (see last three photos). He’s very friendly and a happy guy. He would do well with a very active lively family. He appears to be housebroken. He has a strong pull on the leash, but then he was anxious to get out to do his business. He did not want to meet any other dogs. It appears he was intimidated by them. He needs a yard to explore, but then wants to come in to cuddle and share family time.

Look at Mariah’s unique coloring. She’s a handsome girl with soft brown eyes to match her coloring. She’s a two year-old 58 pound lab/retriever mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/5 as a stray. I was told by another volunteer before I even met her that she was sweet. I certainly concur. She did spend a lot of time looking over the wall and whining. I’m assuming she was looking for her owners. Because of this she will need a tall secure fence. She doesn’t appear to know the sit command and wasn’t particularly interested in my treats. But when she did take a treat she took it gently. She’s very agile as she climbed up on benches and our play equipment. She stayed close. When I sat down, she tried to get up on my lap. She walked very well on a leash looking back at me for approval. She didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs. She’s very sweet, gentle, and well mannered. She wants to be an inside dog so she can share her love with you.

Meet Carmelo! He is a 1 yr old Lab/Retriever and Pointer mix that weighs 70lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as an owner surrender on 11/14. Reason for surrender was the owners were moving and could not take him. When Carmelo and I went outside in the yard or in front of the building it was easy to see how much he missed his family. He continued to look for them and wanted to go look for them. He is a big boy and does pull very strongly on a leash. He also will jump on you, so redirection/additional training may be needed. Having a very tall and secured yard so he can run and play in. He didn`t show any interest in toys, yet knows the sit command, At times he does not take treats gently, so some continual reminders to him would be necessary. He is a sweet boy and loves to be petted and given hugs. He has been well cared for and hopes to return to living indoors with his loving family. He didn`t show any interest in the other dogs barking at him, but we always advise to ask the shelter for a dog test if there will be another dog in the home. If you can offer this lovely boy a caring home of his very own, please come meet him.
