Story
Maui is a beautiful, sweet, and silly 100lb Double Doodle (her wisdom panel shows 45% Labrador Retriever, 32% Golden Retriever, 22% Poodle, and 1% Flat-Coated Retriever). She came to SPAR facing life and death, having to undergo her second gastrointestinal surgery. She luckily pulled through the surgery and the weeks of recovery. She had previously had a foreign body removal 6 months prior as a puppy. Maui is looking for a special home. Having already used two (or more) of her spare lives, her body cannot afford another foreign body removal or gastrointestinal surgery. She cannot have access to any toys or anything left out she can chew on (blankets, dog beds, her leash, plastic dog bowls, etc). She sleeps in her kennel at night and is great around other dogs of all sizes. She is learning about cats in her current foster home and might be okay around dog-savvy cats. She would be okay in a home with older kids that understand the safety concerns of leaving things out where Maui can get into them. She has decent leash manners and enjoys going on walks. She is very smart and would love to take additional obedience classes to bond more with her new family. Maui also has already had an incisional gastropexy, so no future risks of GDV, or “bloat”. If you are interested in meeting Maui, please complete the adoption application. We go through a multi-step process for our dogs that includes meeting at the fosters home, a home inspection, and reference checks.

Story
Rex 3-year-old male yellow Lab mix 77 lbs Neutered Background: A heartbreaking story... This guy was brought in to a vet in Stanislaus County by a good Samaritan (we think) who found him. We suspect he had either fallen off the back of a truck or had been hit by a car. He was suffering from multiple abrasions and lacerations and a dislocated hip. A rescue advocate in the Modesto area notified us... and we mobilized to get him the heck out of there and into our program. After a few quick vet visits and med boarding, he was treated for his wounds and underwent FHO surgery on 17 April to resolve the dislocated femur bone. What foster says: Rex came to me one day following FHO surgery. He was on four meds and had to wear the cone of shame with limitations. Fast forward a few months and Rex has made great progress and gets around really well. He is completely housebroken, a true gentleman and well behaved in the house and the backyard. Rex has learned to love his crate after some work and easily chills for a few hours when I need to leave the house. Rex has a healthy appetite and sleeps through the night on a dog bed in my room. Rex does have a very strong prey drive that also carries over to our walks when he sees other dogs and animals. He truly loves all people but he is quite anxious/reactive when he sees other dogs and cats, besides the neighbor's dog that he walks with. He is not a “dog park dog” and really enjoys spending time with me in the backyard and the house. Loves to sniff around, chase squirrels and birds in the yard when he gets a chance. He is not a digger or a barker. Rex would do best with an experienced dog owner, someone who spends a lot of time at home, that will give him regular exercise in the backyard and continue with his training if you plan to walk him. Rex is perfectly happy hanging out near his person and will become your best friend quickly. What Rescue Rep Says Quite a rescue and recovery for Rex. We did a DNA test on him... and he came back.... as... drum roll... half doberman, half pit bull terrier. We were thinking Rhodesian ridgeback, visla... Rex is fine with dogs he has been properly (and slowly) introduced to. But he is hyper vigilant and alert on walks about the neighborhood. He becomes quite anxious when he sees other dogs, cats, squirrels, etc... and kinda loses his mind. We are enlisting the help of professional dog trainers to design a rehabilitation/de-sensitization program for Rex. He will need a savvy and strong adopter who is game to take on a project. Not for a home with kids or anyone unsteady on their feet or a cat within a 10-mile radius. Medical: Rex is current on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative and neutered. He continues to build up muscle on that FHO'd leg. Located In: Mountain View If you are interested in Rex, please contact Rescue Rep Dave at david.c.ely@sbcglobal.net

Story
Blue: 7 year-old black Labrador, 65 Pounds, Spayed Background: Blue's family made a decision to rehome her as they didn’t have time for her. The adult daughter, who was Blue's main caretaker, moved out of the home this last year. Blue was primarily an outside dog and was not getting the attention she deserved. In her first foster home, Blue showed some possessiveness over toys when other dogs were nearby. With her current foster family, toys are kept out of the environment. For this reason, we recommend a toy-free shared space if there are other dogs in the home. What Blue's Foster Says: Blue knew one family, where she was primarily kept in the backyard, but despite that, she’s affectionate, eager to connect and adapting well to the comforts of indoor living. Blue is housetrained and will let you know when she needs to go out by standing at the door quietly or barking when someone isn't there to let her out. Blue is a beautiful purebred American lab, with strong prey instincts and a true lab demeanor (loving, loyal, smart). She is such a sweet, loving girl who loves to cuddle, but she is also very spirited and loves to get wild with toys or chasing birds! She’s a moderately active dog who needs one good long walk or a few short walks a day. I’ve been doing a few miles at the beach each day with her and that seems to tire her out. She’d do great with a family where she gets lots of play and stimulation or anyone who is home most of the day. If you’re looking for a full-time buddy, she’s your girl! She sleeps great all night in her crate with no issues, but would also love a home where she can sleep near you or with you, but it’s not needed. She’s on a schedule of 10/11pm bed and 7/8am wake up, but she will sleep in as well. She Loves to chase birds at the beach or park and has an excellent nose, she probably would’ve made a great hunting dog. We’re working on her recall with a long leash and she’s doing really well. She stays right by my side 90% of the time anyways, but we’re working on her listening when something excites her to run, like birds or a dog. I think she was given a lot of love in her previous home due to how sweet and loving she is toward all people and kids I’ve seen her meet. She’s a perfect angel in the car, so anywhere you wanna go she is happy to politely join! She pulls on leash and she’s pretty strong for her size, but she does well with a harness and plenty to sniff. Walks are pretty leisurely while she’s sniffing, but if she sees a bird she will sprint to catch it, even if it’s flying overhead lol! She barks at some dogs on leash, which we’ve been working on and she’s doing better. She’s been learning to look at me for a treat instead and she stays “calm” while she looks at me. She previously lived with 3 other labs and I’ve seen her wag her tail very excitedly at certain dogs playing at the beach, so I think she would love to be around other dogs to have buddies to play with. However, she would also do really well in a home as the only dog where she’s getting all the attention as she is very people focused. She will follow you everywhere. She loves to be by you all day even just to nap while you work. She’s crazy for food, which helps a lot with training, she’ll do anything for a treat! But it does require we keep the kitchen closed while we’re not in there or if we’re distracted cooking. She does some demand barking (mainly for dinner and attention), but it hasn’t been a big issue. It doesn’t seem like she had rules or training enforced in her home, but she’s a good girl, very smart, and seems trainable. It’s going to take a bit of time and patience, but anyone who is willing to invest in her training will end up with a great dog with so much love to give! What Rescue Rep Says: We want Blue in a home where she won't be left for long stretches of the day. A stay-at-home parent, families who work from home or families who can take her to work with them would be ideal. A family who wants a dog to accompany them on outdoor adventures and vacations would be wonderful! We are looking for a home where Blue will receive daily exercise and activity. Her previous owner emphasized that Blue DOES NOT LIKE CATS! Blue loves to swim. It would be ideal if her next home had a pool. Blue was raised around children ages 8–14 and spent time with a toddler over the past year but with her being an outside dog, we don't know how much time she actually spent with them. We discovered that Blue is not a fan of the vet. Prior to making her way to us, we sent her to the vet to get vaccines updated. Blue did fine up until the vet went to examine her ears; Blue got snappy so the visit was cut short. The owners report Blue was never like that before but Blue's last visit prior to this was over three years ago. We have taken Blue to the vet since and while she is happy to be there and likes the vet, she reacted when she had a painful abscess examined on her bottom. A few quirks to note: She’s not a fan of the vet, so visits may require a little extra patience and planning. On walks, she barks at other dogs, but with guidance and consistency, this can be managed. She also barks at the gardener. If you’re looking for a loving, people-focused pup who will happily follow you from room to room and curl up next to you whenever she gets the chance, look no further. She craves human attention and will thrive in a home where she can be part of the family’s daily life. Her ideal day includes daily walks, running around the backyard, being by your side, and maybe a cozy nap on a soft bed nearby. She will also join you on the sofa if you let her. Seeking experienced dog owners or individuals who have previously worked with dogs that need some behavior management. A stable household with a predictable routine, which can help Blue feel secure and reduce any anxiety-driven behaviors. Medical: Blue is spayed. She is up to date with Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, heartworm tested (negative) and is microchipped. Located In: San Francisco. If you are interested in Blue, please email Rescue Rep Kris Krisellen.nm@gmail.com In your email, please tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for Blue.
