Story
Maui is a beautiful, sweet, and silly 75lb Double Doodle (her wisdom panel shows 45% Labrador Retriever, 32% Golden Retriever, 22% Poodle, and 1% Flat-Coated Retriever). She came to SPAR facing life and death, having to undergo her second gastrointestinal surgery. She luckily pulled through the surgery and the weeks of recovery. She had previously had a foreign body removal 6 months prior as a puppy. Maui is looking for a special home. Having already used two (or more) of her spare lives, her body cannot afford another foreign body removal or gastrointestinal surgery. She cannot have access to any toys or anything left out she can chew on (blankets, dog beds, her leash, plastic dog bowls, etc). She sleeps in her kennel at night and is great around other dogs of all sizes. She is learning about cats in her current foster home and might be okay around dog-savvy cats. She would be okay in a home with older kids that understand the safety concerns of leaving things out where Maui can get into them. She has decent leash manners and enjoys going on walks. She is very smart and would love to take additional obedience classes to bond more with her new family. Maui also has already had an incisional gastropexy, so no future risks of GDV, or “bloat”. If you are interested in meeting Maui, please complete the adoption application. We go through a multi-step process for our dogs that includes meeting at the fosters home, a home inspection, and reference checks.

I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereMeet Turtle! This adorable 6-year-old, 11-pound Miniature Poodle mix is a shy little guy doing his best to be a good boy. Despite a rough start in life, including trauma that led to the amputation of his back left leg, Turtle has proven to be one tough cookie with an abundance of love to give. Turtle may be small in size, but he’s big on personality! He’s a happy fellow who is adjusting well to his new surroundings. In his foster home, he’s mastered the dog door and is doing a great job with his potty training—so proud of him! He’s a fan of leisurely walks (though he's still refining his leash skills—he’s got a nose that loves to lead the way!) and enjoys the simple pleasures of squeaky toys and games of fetch. Turtle is calm and easygoing with other small dogs, as long as he’s given a gentle introduction. But really, his favorite playmate is his foster mom and toys! While he’s a bit sensitive with grooming, he’ll need regular care to keep his poodle coat in tip-top shape. This sweet boy would thrive in an adult household with experienced dog lovers. Whether he’s the only dog in your life or has a chill canine companion, Turtle is sure to bring joy and a whole lot of love into your home. Story
I am at Oakland Animal Services in kennel Dog Adoption:2Meet Loveseat! This sweet, 68-pound lab mix is a big ball of love and affection – he’s basically a walking hug machine! He loves nothing more than being close to his people. At just a year old, he’s playful but also knows how to melt into you for a cozy cuddle session. Loveseat is easygoing, social, and loves to play gently with other dogs. He’d do well with another dog who matches his medium energy, or as a solo dog with plenty of love and attention. Either way, he’s ready to give you all the cuddles and fun you can handle! Whether it’s fetch, a quick jog, or just snuggling up together, Loveseat’s always up for quality time with his human. This loveable 1-year old is still learning his manners and would thrive with a dog-savvy adopter who can help him work on some training. He’s got a bit of puppy curiosity, but he’s easily redirected, especially when treats are involved! His favorite trick? Giving big, soft hugs. If you’re ready for endless affection, a playful partner, and a dog who wants to be by your side, Loveseat is your guy. He just landed in a foster home and we can't wait to find out more! Story
(born May 2022) I adopted Frankie from a family when she was a year old - she was so calm! She is unfazed by fireworks, sudden noises, or garbage trucks driving by. At the dog park, she loves to run, but, if other dogs start playing too rough, she walks away! She is great with other dogs, my grand kids and strangers, men and women. She loves going to the dog park, is great walking on leash around the neighborhood, and riding in the car. She is a very social dog but I have left her home alone for up to six hours with no problems. Recently, Frankie started barking at other dogs when both are on leashes; she wants to run over and play. Same two dogs off leash & free to play and sniff butts and everything is fine. On the recommendation of a trainer, I switched to a Halti head collar; That combined with words works wonders. With a bigger & more active household and more time to run and play, this frustration on her leash would fade away. She would love a canine housemate.
