Story
Meet Thor!  He's a vey handsome sweet guy!  He is a 3-4 year old that was rescued from a horrific dog meat farm in South Korea.  We have partners we work with there that pull these dogs from the worst horrors imaginable.  Many of these dogs start off in horrific puppy mill type facilities on tiny rabbit cage size wire crates in complete filth.  If they are not sold at 6 or 8 weeks then they either stay for a couple years to be used to breed more and then are sold off to the meat trade, or they are sold off right away.  Jindo's and Tosa's are the most common meat type dogs, and are very commonly bred specifically for their meat and the meat farms also act as breeding farms until they reach a good age and weight. South Korea is one of the only countries that actually farms dogs for their meat.   Some restaurants will serve a dish called " bosintang ", which stands for "dog meat soup". It's a popular dish in South  Korea with some of the older generations,  and is said to act as an aphrodisiac for men.    Little dogs are used for elixirs and potions.  The younger generation is mostly against this practice and many choose to not eat them, and we can only hope in time with education and generations of change that an end will come to this horrific trade.  Sadly, when Thor was caged at the meat farm- the conditions are so horrible that he wound up getting his leg caught in the bars and severing most of his front leg.  When rescued, he had to have his leg amputated.  You would never know he has only 3 legs as he walks, runs and plays just as good as a 4 legged dog!  It just makes him that much more special.  Thor and some of his friends have been flown here for a chance at a future and a real life.  These are miracle dogs that they are alive today.  Our adoption fee is $600 which helps offset some of the flight costs.  If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application form at  https://form.jotform.com/oscarlucy/dog-adoption-app December 19, 2024, 5:28 pm

Story
Meeks is the total package! He’s medium in size so easy to take everywhere, he’s stunning and he’s got a lot of personality. He was found as a stray in Pacoima and taken to the local shelter. He was then pulled by a rescue that put him directly in boarding which was confusing for him since he was a street dog. We were altered to the situation when the rescue reached out saying they didn’t have a foster for him and were not able to fulfill their commitment. He was transferred to us and went to a very experienced/dedicated foster. He’s dong great! He’s learning his manners, working on his house training and he’s fabulous with other dogs. He’s young, playful and needs exercise/adventure.

Story
Breed: Jindo / Terrier mix Age: 4 yrs. Weight: 22 lbs. Good with dogs: yes Good with cats: yes Good with kids: unsure Energy level: unsure Good with men/strangers: very scared of men Hypoallergenic: no Special home requirements or medical: needs an adult only female, calm household with a yard and another pet Additional info: My name is Vera and I’m here to be your cuddle bug! I can also be your cuddle buddy if you have other furry friends as I like being around other dogs and even cats too! I’m not really a barker but I will alert you if I hear or sense something outside as I am a protector. I can lay with you on the couch or go run around outside as long as I’m around you because I do enjoy getting pet all the time. I am also potty trained as I do like my homes when I’m in them as well the stuff inside so you can trust me that I won’t bite your shoes or nice furniture as they don’t interest me. What does interest me is a quiet home and yummy treats! Because I have been hurt in the past, I need an adult only female household that is calm and loving. I do best with another pet or pets in the house and a yard because I am scared of busy streets and do not enjoy walking on the leash. If you're looking for a forever best friend who can hang with you in your house and yard, I'm your girl! Story
Breed: Jindo mix Age: 4 yrs. Weight: 20 lbs. Good with dogs: yes Good with cats: unsure Good with kids: unsure Energy level: unsure Good with men/strangers: yes Hypoallergenic: no Special home requirements or medical: none Additional info: This dog was rescued from the meat trade industry in Korea. In their life, prior to rescue, they have been neglected and abused. They have witnessed horrific things including the slaughter of their best friends. They have not experienced the loving touch of a human. Thankfully, a dog rescue organization in Korea stepped in to save them. Some dogs are taken directly from the meat farms, others from shelters where they have ended up when farms close or are abandoned. Others from the streets or dumps where they are left to die. After being rescued in Korea, wonderful volunteers donate countless hours to begin rehabilitation of each and every dog. They spend hours socializing with the dogs providing them with the first glimpse of human affection they have ever known. They introduce them to leashes and crates, and work to help them understand that life can be beautiful and kind. When a dog is well adjusted enough to adopt out, the organization then works to place them with adoptive families or other rescue organizations. There quite simply are not enough homes in their home county for these sweet lost souls. Dogs Without Borders is one of their partner organizations. When they arrive in Los Angeles, another phase of their rehabilitation begins. When they first arrive after the long flight, most of these dogs are extremely shy and scared. They require patience, patience, and more patience as they learn that they are also safe in their new environment. One’s instinct would be to smother them with affection and attention given their tragic past, but this is not how these dogs learn to thrive. Persistent kindness and patience are key. Although they adjusted to life outside of the meat farm in Korea, most sights and sounds in the big city will be new to them. Things like cars, streets, loud sounds will all be new and a challenge to overcome. They are flight risks, so we always ask they be double leashed when walked. Our foster team will work with you throughout the process. If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online foster application.Hi, I'm Smokey, a handsome Chow in need of a new home. I was transferred from another rescue who rescued me from a LA shelter and I'm grateful to be given a chance to find my forever home.My training is impeccable. I don't try to rush out of the gate and I sit and stay until given a command. I can pull a little bit when on leash, so I will need some work on my manners while walking.I need a home with no small children. Older children who know how to be respectful may be ok. I need to be the only dog in the home and will need an experienced dog owner knowledgeable about Chows. It's unknown how I'd do with cats.If you're looking for a friendly floof ball, fill out an online application to meet me.November 7, 2024, 11:05 am

Story
Breed: Chow DOB: 9/2016 Gender: female Altered: yes Coat: long Size: medium Color(s): red/blond Description: Hi, I'm Paca, a shy, sweet Chow that was rescued after my owner passed away. My house sold quickly and was gated up. It's unknown if I escaped and couldn't be caught or someone turned me loose to fend for myself. Either way I was out on my own for two months in very hot weather. Thankfully someone down the street noticed me on my own and started giving me food/water daily. But even with her kindness, I wouldn't let anyone get too close to me. With the help of many people I was caught and now I'm waiting for my special someone to make me a part of their family. After being scared and on my own, my fur became matted and I needed to be shaved. As you can see my beautiful fur is already growing back. CARL volunteers are working on getting to know my likes/dislikes and helping me with leash training. I'm slowly learning to trust and come out of my shell. I love to be scratched on the head. I'm happy to explore my new world when I go out for my regular walking route. I have not been reactive to other dogs. I'm shy of strangers. A huge heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful people who helped rescue me and who donated towards my care.
