Meet Duke! This little guy is playful, adventurous, athletic and super sweet. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, he might just be your family’s perfect match! Duke is a charming gentleman. He’s wonderful with other dogs and children, is house trained and does well in the car. His foster shares that he loves spending time at a local elementary school and cuddling with all the kids! He likes to “hunt” for rabbits, so a home with small animals might not be ideal. The right home for Duke will be somewhat active and willing to work on skills like basic commands and leash training. Duke might have one eye, but he’ll “only have eyes” for you! He’s looking for a best friend and companion with whom to share life’s many adventures. We strongly encourage basic obedience training for all our dogs, as it not only helps your dog blossom into a well-balanced canine citizen with good manners, but it also helps to form a lasting bond between your dog and the humans in your family. Will you open your home and heart to Duke? Fill out an application today! Medical Note: Duke is missing an eye from a previous injury/surgery (details unknown). No ongoing issues expected at this time. Medical Note: This dog is being treated/has been treated for heartworm disease. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. Whenever possible, SOSARL advocates for following the American Heartworm Society guidelines for heartworm disease treatment as the safest and most effective methods; the active portion of this treatment protocol can take up to four months to complete. Once treatment is completed and the dog tests negative for microfilaria, the dog will be cleared to resume normal activity and will be ready to travel north and be placed into an adoptive home. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment, and is expected to complete treatment with no complications. Please ask your Adoption Counselor for the specific treatment protocol used for and current status of this dog. Please check with your vet if you have any questions or concerns about this medical history. An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl.org) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
