LEON - 4.5 months, 12lbs, Terrier Mix, Neutered Expected Full Grown Size About 25lbs  This puppy is joining Social Tees on 1/11 and is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program starting that day. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult. Energy levelMEDIUM: Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Working on this skill. Puppies under 12 weeks old are often on track with their wee pad skills, but they’re too young to walk outside in public NYC areas yet because they haven’t finished their puppy vaccine series. Puppies older than 12 weeks are usually learning to do their business outside. Potty training takes a lot of patience, consistency, and clean up.  Crate trained?Nope. None of our new puppies have been formally trained, but many of our foster parents/adopters choose to crate train. It can be a great way to keep puppies safe and teach them independence. Social with dogs?Yes. Some puppies are shy, others are bold, but all have the potential to be taught healthy socializing skills. It’s a huge part of raising a puppy and must be done carefully. How they interact with other dogs depends largely on how their humans help them learn to.  Social with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)Yes… but most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.   Social with cats?Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.  Mouthy play: High! All puppies go through phases where they chew your stuff and grab your hands, arms, feet… puppies naturally explore the world, play, and test boundaries with their mouths. (It also happens when they’re teething.) Their teeth are super sharp though, so it can be a very painful phase for humans and other animals in the home. Proper training, outlets, and socialization are key. Leash manners:None. :) Will need to learn this skill.   Separation anxiety:MEDIUM: Most puppies have some level of separation anxiety as they learn to self soothe. Often they cry the first 10+ minutes when they are left home alone or in a crate. Consistent training and alone time is crucial. Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age), spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer uponHow this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. JOAN- 2 years, 23lbs, Terrier Mix, Spayed This dog is joining Social Tees on 1/11 and is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program starting that day. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup. Energy level:MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Probably! Adults usually are, but all will have transitional accidents for the first week or so. A consistent walking route and schedule plus finding spots with grass or dirt can help. Social with other dogs?Yes, but we don’t know to what degree yet. Some like to wrestle with every passing pup, others can coexist well but prefer to keep to themselves. We’ll learn more soon. Social with cats? Not sure yet! Some breed mixes that are generally NOT great matches for homes with cats include large hounds, huskies, and shepherds.  Comfortable with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)We’re not sure yet, but we try to err on the side of caution. Respectful kids ages 8 and up are probably a safe bet. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.  Okay in the city?We don’t know yet. Most adult dogs do well in the city after they’ve had time to adjust to a new environment, but some never adapt and need homes in the burbs.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake  How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. ROB - 5 months & 10lbs (as of 1/27) Terrier Mix, Neutered Expected Full Grown Size About 20lbs This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: "Rob is such a sweet boy but still very much in his puppy phase. He has high energy , loves to play with his toys and play fetch with a tennis ball. Most of all, he is VERY food motivated. We are working on potty and crate training. He takes his time with his walks, stopping and observing everyone who passes by. He is friendly with other dogs but he feels threatened by other dogs he will hide and bark once they are a safe distance away. His legs are long for his body so he clumsily moves around the apartment and trots like a deer when he runs. He shows affection by booping his nose with your nose. He got comfortable very quickly after coming home and has been very loving since." RIVER - 2 years, 16lbs, Terrier Mix, Spayed Thier Foster Parent Says: "River is an incredibly sweet, certified good girl. She loves playing with toys, being around people, belly and head scratches, snuggling, and above all else - food! She's housebroken, good on a leash, knows her name, comfortable in her crate, good with other dogs of all sizes, doesn't chew on things she's not supposed to, and a people person through-and-through. Within hours of her arrival to our apartment, she made herself right at home – ate her dinner, played with toys, jumping into our laps for kisses and belly rubs. Her puppy energy manifests in excessive face kisses, following us around everywhere we go, and night zoomies. Things we're working on: digging her paws on the rug, not jumping up to give unsolicited face kisses, basic commands (sit and stay). We have seen her "mouth" (not biting or chewing) our hands or a blanket when we're playing and she's all riled up." Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction.  Okay in the city? Sort of — Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well and probably just needs more time to adjust (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue) Jumping on People to Say Hi? High – Very excited to greet everyone and has no idea how to do so politely. YARA - Terrier Mix, 1.5 years, 21lbs, Spayed  Her Foster Mom Says: Yara is a bundle of sweetness and energy. She is a companion dog through and through, wanting to be by your side 24/7. She needs her exercise, but wants her person involved by playing fetch, tug, or running around together. Once home, she wants to be touching her people. If she’s not sitting in your lap, she’s laying on your feet. Yara is house trained, great when left alone in her crate, loves all people she meets, and would be thrilled to have a canine companion. She is a true terrier so her prey drive is high. A home without small pets or cats would be best.  Energy LevelHigh— Requires lots of activity like jogging, long walks, would thrive with agility trainingCuddle Bug LevelHigh— Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the timePotty TrainedYes— Few or no accidentsComfy with strangers?Yep— Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello.Comfortable with Children?Yes for 12 and up— **she can be super excitable and a bit pushy when she playing. Sweet little Sam needs a furever home! Sam is a 3 year old Jack Russell terrier mix and weighs 14 lbs. He is a little guy who comes from the big city - sadly, Sam lost his family when they made other living arrangements. Luckily, we were able to find a foster to save Sam the stressful ordeal of being left at the shelter. But now he still needs that forever love, a home that won't give up on him! Sam likes other dogs and is friendly meeting them, although has never lived with them before. Sam loves bellyrubs and snuggling with his people; Sam is great with kids, previously living with a toddler - Sam even let him play "dress up" with him! Sam loves going for walks and knows his commands. He is a wonderful little companion!! Sam is fully vetted, neutered, micro chipped, and ready to go home with YOU! If you can open your heart & home to dear Sam, please contact AmsterDog by call/text at 917-689-8414 or by email at info@amsterdog.org. Apply to adopt Sam at AmsterDog.org. Thanks for caring about a pet in need! Sam is currently being fostered on Staten Island NY, but transportation is provided for approved adopters.
