Story
Xavier is a striking Husky mix with a beautiful coat and vibrant personality. This lovable boy is a volunteer favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Xavier is incredibly friendly with people and is always eager to make new human friends. He thrives in an environment where he can get lots of attention and exercise, so an active household would be perfect for him. When it comes to outings, Xavier is a dream on a leash. He walks beautifully, stays focused, and is easy to handle, making him a joy on walks, runs, or hikes and he seems to be housetrained, making him a well-behaved companion indoors as well! A fenced yard would be ideal for him to burn off his energy, but he also enjoys a good mental challenge, so puzzle toys or interactive games are a great way to keep him entertained. He’s not a fan of other dogs encroaching on his space and would do best in a setting where he can have all the attention to himself, so a home without other dogs would make him the happiest. Xavier’s Husky instincts also mean he’s not a fan of cats—he tends to pester them, so a cat-free home is a must. If you're looking for a loyal, adventurous companion who will keep you active and engaged, Xavier might just be the perfect fit.

Story
Say hello to Starburst. She is a lovely young pup who is just learning about life. She appears not to have been exposed to much before now, and so she is a little shy to warm up at first. She wasn’t familiar with stairs or an elevator before, but she’s getting the hang of these new experiences. Starburst is very cuddly with humans once she’s comfortable, and loves petting and brushing. She is soaking up all of the attention she can get. Starburst walks nicely on leash, politely passes other dogs, and will enjoy an owner who helps build her confidence with praise and positivity. We know she will blossom with consistency and love.

Story
This is Loki, a friendly and affectionate husky who is a bit confused as to why he’s in the shelter. He seems to be sad and still hoping his previous owner is coming to pick him up. Loki is a sensitive boy who will need a little coaxing to come out of shell. On his wish list is a home with a secure yard and a new buddy who is willing to go at his pace. Loki walks very nicely on leash (once you can encourage him with pets to go a little further) and is very polite meeting other dogs. He might do well in a home with another secure dog who could show him the ropes – he would need a proper introduction to make sure. Loki is still very young and energetic, but a bit uncertain. He would love a home soon where he can feel secure and blossom.

Story
Meet Copper, a gorgeous husky who is just as sweet as he is handsome. He is very friendly with people and loves getting out for walks and play. He is easy to walk on leash, checking in with his handler and showing his curious side by sniffing things. Copper appears dog-friendly, passing other dogs on leash with no reaction. He came in very skinny and is working on putting on a few pounds to get to a healthy weight. Copper is also a tri-pod. He had an old pelvic injury that required a back leg amputation, but he doesn't let it slow him down at all. In fact, he seems much happier to be pain-free. This all means he may not need as much exercise as many huskies. He can be slightly nervous around new things, but adjusts quickly to his surroundings. Copper is loving and affectionate and will make a great family dog. He also appears housetrained.

Story
I found this beautiful Husky roaming around the streets of my town in the SF Bay Area. I kept him in my backyard a few days until his owner could be found. No one came forth and so he went to the county animal shelter where he stayed for a week and then was scheduled to be euthanized. I couldn't let that happen to this sweet, innocent dog so I took him home as a foster. He has been with me for a week and is a very social and friendly dog. He is about 2-3 years old. Since I already have 2 large dogs, I do not have any room for a third, so that is why I would like to find a permanent home for this amazing animal. He is full of LOVE and is very PLAYFUL! He gets along with kids and cats! He is trained and knows to sit and stay. He is friendly and comfortable with new people- men and women alike. He would be great as an only dog in a family that has older kids (10+ years old) who would love to play with him and walk him daily.

Story
SAM(antha) is a delightful small-sized Shepherd mix and would make an attentive companion. Sam is affectionate and sweet. She has an overall happy demeanor and just wants love and attention. She prefers dog friends that are smaller than her. While Samantha wants love and attention, as sated above, she would thrive in a structured, calm home with adults or older, dog-savvy teenagers. Notes from a volunteer who took her out recently: We have taken her out before awhile ago, but have had not had a chance to take her since due to the many other dogs we have been taking out. She remembered the scent of my car as she got in and rolled around happily in recognition. We were very happy to connect with her again. She is definitely a dog who really enjoys a long hike/walk as she is quite energetic as are most German shepherds. She needs a firm hold on her leash and she responds best to firm tones if you would like her to listen to you. She got along with my two small dogs. She seems to prefer dogs that are smaller than her. When bigger dogs walked past us at the park, she did react with a growl. I am not sure how she would do with dogs bigger than her in general. If you have one and would like to take her out, it would be best to do a slow intro with the help of a Milo staff perhaps, before heading out if all goes well. She rides well in the car. She does pull occasionally on her leash, but I think it is due to the excitement of being out and the sighting of squirrels. With continued practice, it should be possible to train her with firm commands to limit the pulling. She does like to lean in to be petted so she enjoyed the quiet moments too when we were siting and taking in the solitude of the park before the rain. When the rain finally descended on us, she was a great sport and ran with us happily back to the car.

Story
One of a pair of hybrid type fellows who arrived via a small rescue in the Sacramento area. Cysco is smaller and likely perhaps to be part Coyote. These are truly delightful creatures, playful and silly, who just love romping and playing in the wooded hills at our Sanctuary! They have two delightful girlfriends in their pack and the foursome immediately took to each other like long lost friends (or family members!) Cysco is not a dog who chooses human company, though he is sweet, sensitive, curious and does engage, but chooses dogs over humans. We respect that choice and give him and the others the time and a big space to call home - eventually in the right circumstances with the right kinds of people and other dog(s) we can consider placing them, or they'll stay here and have their friends and good food and a happy life! Thank you for considering adoption of a Milo Foundation Sanctuary dog. Our Sanctuary is where our rescued dogs who have had difficulty in a home in the past, have behavioural issues, or too much energy, or for some, aggression issues with other dogs, or intense stranger danger that make them more difficult to safely and happily live in urban environments. These are not beginner dogs or for the most part nor are they for families with children. IF you are looking for an easy dog to add to your family, we suggest looking at the dogs at our Adoption Center, Milo Pt Richmond. BUT, if you can offer a safe and nurturing home to a dog with some behavioural "quirks" please do send an application today. Thank you.
