Story
Jameson has been with us a year now and we are still struggling to find the right home for this sweet boy, who is so endearing and very adoptable! Jameson was saved from the e-list at MCACC where he was listed for being too scared. One of the first things we learned about Jameson after he arrived is that he actually survived distemper as a puppy. This is a VERY rare disease to survive, so this lucky boy has cheated death twice now! His teeth are a little worse than normal for his age (typical of distemper survivors) and he has some minor neurological traits that are remnants of the disease. For example, his tongue sticks out a little bit, and he can struggle with walking up stairs – though not for lack of trying! Jameson is a very lovable, goofy boy with so much personality. He is more high-energy and loves to play with other dogs and to chase lizards in his yard. He does well with the other large dogs and he likes running up and down the fence with his neighbors’ smaller dog – he may be ok in a home with small dogs, but we haven’t tested a play date yet. He loves walks and walks very well with minimal pulling. He has not shown any desire to escape his fenced-in yard and his foster says he even has great recall, which is more rare for a husky. He does fine in a crate but will whine as he does not like to be confined to that small space. With a yard he is very independent and can keep himself busy. Jameson has some minor resource-guarding issues with treats that have improved leaps and bounds since he came to us. He had just one resource-guarding bite, and after this we sent him to a board and train program. He has not had a single incident since then, and with warning from his foster will allow her to take things from him with no issues now! Jameson loves food and treats, so positive reinforcement works great for him. His trainer left us with some very helpful notes on him at the conclusion of his training: Jameson is a super sweet and funny boy that tries to do things right. His future owner just needs to be patient because the neurological damage is definitely a bit of a handicap at times. I know Jameson knows the commands but I do give him time to put his body in the right, most comfortable position. So, he might not fall down the instant I ask him to lay down or sit but he is obeying and I can tell he tries. He gets distracted easily but all it takes it a little reminder, a second command, and he is back in business. Jameson has never tried to be a brat or very sassy. Jameson is very affectionate and loves to cuddle up on you once he gets to know you. He has done well around teenagers in his foster home and new strangers. He’s also talkative and loves to sings the husky song, especially around people and cars. He needs someone who is active but also patient. He’s a very good boy but just needs someone who is willing to understand and work with him. A home with one or more other active dogs would be ideal an outlet for his energy. If you’re looking for a sweet, fun-loving adventure buddy, Jameson is your guy! https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/

Story
Meet Buckeye! This big (70+ lb) husky mix was another pull from the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County shelter. Buckeye was placed on the e-list simply because he was scared in the shelter environment. He was frozen and shut down, refusing to walk on a leash and even eat hot dogs. Luckily, he was given a second chance by one of our amazing fosters. Like many fearful huskies, he has started to come out of his shell now that he’s in a safe, quiet home. When he was fresh out of the shelter, Buckeye was very shy and indifferent to the two other dogs in his foster home. But within a week or so, he started going up to the females in the home to seek out attention. He now plays well with the other dogs and even enjoys playing with toys! He does still get scared easily if he is touched on his neck, especially around males. However, he is making great progress and allowing himself to be pet more every day. So far, Buckeye has displayed medium energy. He will alternate between playing with the other dogs and staying to himself. He does not seem to rely on the other dogs for cues or pack habits. He has grumbled at other dogs if they approach one particular bowl he likes, but he does not bark, show teeth, or otherwise act aggressively. He responds well to verbal correction. We believe that Buckeye is still adjusting to life in a loving home and will continue to improve as he learns to trust. As he becomes more comfortable, his fosters plan to work on harnessing and walking on leash, as those are areas where he continues to be fearful. Although Buckeye was dealt a tough hand in life, he has so much love to give. He loves treats and belly rubs. His personality is starting to show, and he’s a smiley boy who enjoys attention from people he trusts. He has done well with the teenagers in his foster home and even does well in a crate. We do think he would be most suited for a calmer home, with mellow dogs or as an only dog. We also recommend caution around young children, not because of any aggression, but because he can still be jumpy around quick movements or people walking towards him. Like so many huskies we see, Buckeye was truly just not meant to live in a shelter. With some time and patience, we are confident he will learn to trust people and show his real self. If you’re ready to open your home and your heart to this big sweetheart, fill out an application today. https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/

Story
Meet Paz! Like many of our recent intakes, Paz found himself on the euthanasia list at MCACC due to fear and stress in the shelter. We don’t know much about his background, but it’s clear that he has had a rough go of it and didn't trust people at all when he first came to us. Paz had a little bit of an adjustment period at first and did end up needing to complete a board and train program with us. Despite everything he’d likely been through and his initial trust issues, he has definitely wanted to be friends with everyone all along. Like a true husky, he doesn’t fully understand that not all dogs want to deal with his shenanigans. There have been quite a few scuffles with other dogs in his foster homes homes, and after spending some time at a board and train program, his trainer does believe it is best that he go to a home as an only dog. He has come such a long way when it comes to his comfort level around people, initially being a bit reactive to unwanted touch. Now he is a total lap dog who just loves affection and attention! Paz has a moderate amount of energy and is pretty well-behaved around the house. He is fully potty- and crate-trained and sleeps well through the night in his crate. He loves going for walks and would make a great hiking buddy. He has come a long way with his training and does know his commands now, but will need a refresher when he is placed (provided by the rescue) - he gets excited and will still jump up on people if he can't contain himself, for example. Like many huskies, he has a stubborn side, and likes to test boundaries. He can also be a bit mouthy when he gets excited. He responds well to gentle correction and especially to re-direction with treats thanks to his strong food motivation. He unfortunately does have a bite record from early on in his time with us, when being corrected more forcefully, and only prior to his training program. He has not had any bite incidences since that time. Because of his history and lingering fear around people, we recommend he go to a child-free home. With patience and consistency, we know that Paz will continue to improve. Despite his rough start in life, Paz is such a sweet, happy boy with so much love to give. He loves belly rubs and snuggling up with his trusted humans. He would make an amazing addition to an active household that is willing to work with him to earn his trust and build his confidence. We’re so happy to see Paz get a fresh start. If you’re interested in meeting him, please fill out an application on our website.  https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/

Story
Blue is another husky we saved from the e-list at MCACC! He landed here from an incident with an animal control officer when he was being captured as a stray - he mouthed this person as a reaction while scared (did not puncture or bite) and was e-listed as a result. His behavior in his foster home since then has truly reinforced just how much this was a one-off fear-response. We haven’t seen any aggression towards humans when it comes to being handled from him! His fosters report that Blue has been a great dog overall. He’s a bit on the higher energy side and is very playful with their other young husky, engaging in typical rough-housing husky-style play. He’s also talkative, and loves to play fetch with tennis balls (and will even hoard them!). He is definitely a little more alpha with other dogs, so we think he would do best in a home with others that are more submissive or medium-tempered. We haven’t had him around small dogs just yet either (or cats).??Blue was more timid and not very trusting of his fosters at first but warmed up pretty quickly. He has become very affectionate in a short time and now loves to cuddle. He has also been very easy to handle for his fosters when it comes to grooming - he enjoys water and is easy to bath. They have a pet vacuum that he also thinks is pretty cool, and loves to be brushed! This definitely sets him apart from many of the other huskies we have met! His fosters are working with him on crate-training, but have said that he isn’t a huge fan so far. He also has shown resource guarding with food, but this can be easily corrected by feeding separately, which we do recommend for him. We are recommending a home with no young kids - teens and older would likely be ok - and owners with breed experience are strongly preferred. ??Blue is a great boy with quite a bit of husky character. Apply to meet him today! https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/
