Story
Meet Luna! Luna is an approximately 4 and a half year old domestic short haired gray and white cat. Luna is a special cat who has been through a lot in her life so far. She was found outside on the brink of death when she was rescued by some kind people and brought to the shelter. It has been a long recovery process for her, made even more difficult by the fact that she is an FIV positive cat. (Please read more about feline FIV below) She has been at the Humane Society for quite some time. Luna is a quiet and timid soul and may take a little while to come out of her shell. She wants to be loved and accepted like all animals do and will need a patient and understanding individual or family to allow her to grow and adapt to her new home.Luna would do best in a quiet and calm home. She would be fine as your one and only or would also be OK with one or two other quiet, non-aggressive and non-dominant cats. No dogs please.FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus, and it is one of the most common infectious diseases of cats globally. Researchers estimate that up to 5% of the feline population will show evidence of exposure. While FIV is similar to HIV in humans, it cannot be transmitted from cats to humans. Cats are more likely to become infected after being bitten (as the saliva allows the virus to enter the body through the open bite wound). Once a cat has been diagnosed with FIV, management becomes monitoring for secondary infections and treating them quickly when they do occur. Finding ways to reduce stress, like making environmental changes or using feline specific CBD products, can help keep their immune system strong so they can more effectively fight off infection. Cats can remain asymptomatic for years; some may never exhibit signs of exposure at all and live completely normal, happy lives. If you are interested in giving Luna the life she deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.https://www.lakeshorehumanesociety.org/online-adoption-form

Story
Pony is a black and white shorthaired male who is about 4 1/2 years old. He was found late last spring on Route 5, with a broken tooth, scared and timid. When he finally felt safe, he became very affectionate and will lean into being petted. He has a cute white muzzle which is carried up between his eyes. This rather sizeable cat is alert and curious, and watches the world through the window in his pen. Sadly, he tested positive for FIV, but is healthy and can live a quite normal life and live in a home with other cats. FIV is not a “sickness”: there is no special treatment required. There is no medication required for most of their lives. All FIV does is lower a cat’s immune system which can make them more susceptible to disease, so they should always remain indoors and keep up on routine vet visits. More information about FIV cats is available if you are interested. See Pony and our other cats ready for adoption by coming to our Open Hours, Saturdays 12-3 P.M. or Wednesdays 6-8 P.M. Applications and special appointments are available through our Facebook page (Lakeshore Humane Society, Inc.) or our website: http://www.lakeshorehumanesociety.org. If you prefer, you can call (716) 672-1991to arrange an appointment and fill our a paper application during your visit. Your feline(s) of choice can be held while your application is processed.
