Story
As discarded hunting dogs, life hasn’t been easy for Heidi and Chaplin, but things are finally beginning to look up! Following a lifetime of neglect, they have received some much needed TLC, and are ready for their forever home. We do believe Heidi and Chaplin to be a bonded pair, so would like to find them a wonderful home for retirement where they can live out their golden years TOGETHER. These days, relaxing and soaking up the love and pampering they deserved all along, is the only thing on their agenda. Both pups are easy going and enjoy time outdoors in a fenced yard for sniffs, as well as, indoor time for ample naps. They lived their entire lives outdoors, so we are working on house training and have already seen great progress within the first couple of weeks. In the meantime, neither minds wearing a diaper. They do not jump up on furniture and are well behaved when left alone. They do not require crates, but will go in one if needed. Since neither pup is particularly confident on stairs - Chaplin being especially unsteady on them - access to staircases should be limited in order to prevent injury. In their foster home, a baby gate does the trick. A couple steps such as with a low deck are okay. Heidi and Chaplin are both lovely, gentle souls, with sweet honey-colored eyes that will melt your heart. Both Heidi and Chaplin are believed to be approximately 10 years old. They each weigh approximately 30 lbs., are spayed/ neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Chaplin has received a clean bill of health, though he does have a permanent head tilt and the aforementioned slight unsteadiness in his gate. The veterinarian he was seen by while in the care of Homes Fur Hounds believes it is likely that a lifetime of untreated ear infections affected Chaplin’s brain and left him with some neurological issues. Provided any future infections are treated promptly, the damage is not expected to progress and Chaplin will remain a sweet, happy - albeit, slightly clumsy fella. Unfortunately, these ear infections have also left behind scarring, and given him “cauliflower ear” on his ear flaps. Now that we’ve treated his active ear infections, swelling has decreased and his ears don’t seem to bother him, but he does ask that they always be handled gently - especially when completing his required weekly cleanings. They are located in Newport News, Virginia.

Story
Dixie is high energy, playful, lovable, and young. With her boundless energy, she would probably love to play with another dog her size. She likes toys so will play with a human in a pinch. She will get into things and onto things (i.e. furniture) if bored. House breaking is going well and she hasn't had any accidents lately, but she is still young and could make a mistake if not let out in a timely manner. She likes to follow you around and doesn't really like to be left alone, but will stay in the crate when her foster parents leave the house for a couple of hours. She likes to climb onto laps, and has fallen asleep on the foster parents on the couch. Sometimes she gets a little excited when walking and will bark at people and dogs, but the foster parents can usually manage it by distracting her and/or using her training. Dixie did have basic dog training and does know sit, stay, down, wait, shake (hands), and settle (when she gets excited) with varying degrees of competence. "Come" is not an easy concept for her so we are still working on that. At her age and energy level, she will need some discipline and a way to expend that energy. She also needs not to be left for long periods of time yet. Dixie is spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on vaccines. If you are interested in meeting her our application can be found at www.homesfurhounds.org.
